I am close to NVa border in MD. So far, I didn't find any repeat blooming Austin rose that does not get BS in our climate, if grown no spray. Even the roses that are described as resistant, like for example The Mayflower (not a climber)defoliate from BS here.
Constance Spty, the onceblooming Austin climber has much better resistance than others. It gives you one glorious show in spring, but rest of the season it stays reasonably healthy.
I would suggest to look at Kordez roses like Laguna, Aloha Hawaii. They have good repeat and are quite healthy, so can be grown no spray. Quadra is very healthy. New Dawn also can be grown no spray here, but will loose leaves from time to time too. It is not an easy task to spray climbers, so I would suggest to start from a resistant rose.

Don't worry about that Golden Celebration. That one long cane it gave you last fall was just the start. If this is it's 3rd season it will probably take off like gangbusters for you. I've had mine for over a decade and it tops out at about 10 feet every year. Even the year I had to cut it to the ground because I had a gall on the biggest cane about 6 inches from the crown and in April of 2007 when we had that bad ice storm on Easter and I had to prune it way down, by the end of both seasons it was right back up there!

That's her in the center on June 2, 2010. By September she was over the top of the eaves which is about 10 feet up from the raised bed she's in.

I've had great luck with Teasing Georgia. Heritage does very well, too, but TG is more resistant than Heritage for me.

I have a little own-root Graham Thomas who has been pretty darned clean, but he's still a little guy :) I've grown the others much longer.

You might want to check out Mortimer Sackler. I don't know about your region, but I grow it no-spray here in zone 6 (Kansas), whereas some of my other Austins may need an occasional spray to keep them clean. I'm trying to grow Mortimer as a tall bush--which it certainly is--but it is obvious that it would have no objections to becoming a climber if I would let it. Instead, I keep pruning it back to about 5-6 ft tall.

It has pink blooms, pretty good rebloom, and not very many thorns on it.

Gruss an Aachen is a favorite of David Austin, and is very much like the Austin roses. There is a climbing sport that behaves really well, not much fuss but unfortunately not the most winter hardy, seems about the same as The Pilgrim and Winchester Cathedral. If you come across it some where, it is well worth trying.

Spirit of Freedom and Teasing Georgia are arguably DA's best climbers. Odd that nobody ever talks about SOF on here.

Crown Princess Margareta makes a nice smaller climber if trained, as does The Pilgrim.

Graham Thomas is an old favorite, but Teasing Georgia is a superior rose in pretty much every respect.

Gertrude Jekyl could also be trained as a climber in your zone, but will need to be in a shadier location if you wish it to repeat. It is not very heat tolerant where rebloom is concerned.

If I had to pick any of these, Spirit of Freedom would get the nod. Unless I wanted something not pink, in which case, Teasing Georgia.

My experience is limited (and I am from NY), but the 2 Austins I have, cannot be considered "climbers". I love Graham Thomas very much for its unique color and fragrance, but it stayed at less then 3 feet. It suffered from BS, but not more then other roses, and I spray. Some hybrid teas in my garden are much taller.

TG tends to get spotty, but not defoliate. Not sure if that is good or bad :) It puts out many long canes and can get rangy. You need support and to prune it back often.

I also have Crown Princess Maragerita and Golden Celebration. CPM is a nice sprawler, GC has been a bit slower to branch out. But I've put both of them on obelisks this year and I'll see how they do.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the lovely picture. I think Spirit of Freedom looks great but wonder if it's likely to ball in highly humid circumstances.

I'm wondering too if I should move my Golden Celebration and see if it will climb for me. Is it too late to move it this year? GC has already leafed out quite a bit.

I know this post is old but liking what Im reading here. Can any of you tell me the difference between Aloha and Aloha Hawaii in terms of look but also for our zone in northern VA

Anna have you found the fabulous website HelpMe Find yet? You can look up just about any rose (also peonies & clematis) and get all kinds of info and pictures with great comments. Aloha is a pink and I think Aloha Hawaii is more of a blended color, both very pretty.

Anna I planted a sport of Aloha, called Lady Ashe this spring, and I really love it. I'm in southern WV, so we couldn't be too far away. The blooms look like wedding cakes, and they smell amazing.
