new dawn climber

I'm probably anxious because of the unusual heat but the only rose in my garden that shows no sign of life is my New Dawn climber. Is it a late budder? This is only it's second year, did OK last year. Thanks!

Hm-m-m-m, my New Dawn is leafing out but did have more dieback than normal. I had to prune it pretty far back. I say give it a little more time as it may show signs of life at the base.
I presume you had planted it with the bud union buried 4-6 inches deep or it was an own root plant?
If not, and the bud union is above ground, it may have bit the dust.
In our areas we need to begin winter protection when we first plant.

I've been watching my New Dawn as well. No sign of new growth yet. I had to prune nearly all her canes down to the ground. But she's been with me for several years and I have faith that I'll see something soon. Don't buy a replacement just yet....

With climbers more than 4 years old, it is good practice to take out some entire canes each year. Take out the oldest 1/3 of the canes at the base. This helps to control size; also, with most varieties, canes are most productive when they are two and three years old. This kind of pruning is traditionally done right after the spring flush of bloom is finished. If your arbor is only, say, 4' wide and 2' deep or long, it is way too small for New Dawn; the best thing would be to remove it now and plant a smaller climber such as Renae, also light pink, but much less vigorous and thorny. As long as stems are nearly vertical, roses will bloom only at the top of the plant. To get bloom further down, you have to train canes semi-horizontally (45 degrees or flatter). If your arbor is deep (long), you can do that on the sides; if not, use the upper faces of the arch as much as possible. Just cutting the canes back as you have done can produce some lower bloom only provided it is done about six weeks before the spring flush of bloom normally occurs. At other times it will result in lots of long canes developing.

thanks. i moved them to the north side of the house. they seem to get sunshine there early enough, around noon to when the sun goes down. what a job. they had very little growth since they were cut in march and transplanted then. but they do have roses, and i will just keep giving them water so they don't wilt. i wish i could give them 20 foot on each side, but can't. they can grow over the fence and into the land next door. i only gave them 10 foot between each other. wish we had bought a better piece of property instead of 55 foot wide with trees on the north side shading most of the yard. speaking of your 40 footer. i almost got a cecile brunner instead of new dawn. never heard of that type of infestation. i know of aphids and black spot. mold too.

Matt- Do I remember correctly that it was you who posted a picture of yourself enjoying a beer in another thread? I remember it because it actually made me laugh. I have told my friend who isn't a gardener that no drink ever tastes as good as the one you have after you have been working in the yard all day and you sit back to survey your progress (OK, a beer at a Cubs game is pretty good too). I ordered my New Dawn from RU as well... Awakening is a possibility, it would balance the color on each side of the front of the house. I was thinking white because I planted a Moondance and a Huldine clematis near this area and I was going to continue the sweep of white. Hmmm... I feel like I need a drink already. Thanks Matt. Gilli- I will keep you posted, Matt is corrupting my plans. :)

Hi Sue, Greetings from across the Sound. I'm south of you, on LI. I have five New Dawns growing along a fence bordering my yard. After they finish blooming, what I normally do is take manual hedge clippers (not the electric trimmer) and clip off all the spent blooms. I also do some shaping with pruners (or loppers!) if needed, but I try to leave as much green as I can (there is no need to cut the leaves off to a set of five). I know what you mean about trying to deadhead up on an arch--I have Westerland (another big thorny rose) that has made it up over the top of an eight foot arch and is starting down the other side. It was a spectacular sight last month. I also use the hedge clippers and deadhead as much as I can, but I don't get crazy if I can't reach. I fertilized Westerland on July 4th and will fertilize the New Dawns sometime this week. I like how "bloom caps" sounds; much nicer than spent blooms. My daughter sometimes helps me deadhead; she calls it giving the roses "haircuts" (she went to beauty school!).

I wouldn't be worried if I were you. I'm sure that yours will wake up soon unless you have major cane loss in your area over the past winter.

My New Dawn isn't showing any signs of life either but it's not unusual for her. She has tiny red leaf buds but they haven't started to swell yet. She usually wakes up and blooms a little later than the most of my other roses so I'm not concerned yet.

I have a 10 year old "mother" of New Dawn, Dr. W. VanFleet. So far no sign of life. It is very big so even it it springs to life it will be starting over. I may replace it with something else as of course it is a once bloomer

As I remember from my early years of rose growing in this zone, ND is considered marginal. So might not be surprising if it died.
