Arbor, New Dawn and how will this work?

This weekend I am taking out some shrubs next to the front corner of my house and putting in an arbor. I have a bunch of questions to make sure I do this correctly and have everything I need when I go to do it.

1. Should I buy 1 or 2 New Dawn Climbers? (The arbor is 58"x86") I was assuming 1 for each side?

2. What does the base of a climber look like? I am guessing that it is pretty narrow and it won't take up a ton of bed space since the canes are going to climb? I have another New Dawn planted on the other side of the house, but it is 1st year so that doesn't give me much to go on.

3. Do you "attach" you canes to the arbor in some way (if so, what are your recommendations) or do I train it like my clematis? The New Dawns at a local nursery that I will be purchasing these from have canes that are already 3-4 high so I have a bit of a head start.

New Dawn gets to be pretty big, Diana. If you plant two of them on one arbor, you might have a difficult time containing them on the arbor.

The appearance of the base will largely depend on how you prune it. You can prune off everything except the main cane until it gets to about 3' high, or whatever you want it to be. One of David Austin's reps told me that.

Sorry, I should clarify WHITE New Dawn. I was told it generally is hardier than an Iceberg climber here? If you have thoughts on this as well, I am listening. :-)

New Dawn, if it is New Dawn, should repeat. I have rooted many for my neighbors. However, they do like a steady diet and should they revert to Dr. Van Fleet, which many have done that I have rooted and mine has also done, it will only bloom once but might in some strange conditions of excess rain, change in temperatures, a little cool spell in summer, or warmer in fall, repeat bloom. I think there was a long conversation on Antique Rose forum about New Dawn once and the consensus was that if you rooted a piece of it (how are you to know) that has reverted to Dr. Van Fleet, it will be a once-bloomer. However, if that piece has not reverted and is still New Dawn, it will repeat bloom. I have several neighbors and friends whose repeat very well (that I rooted). Others, like mine, bloom but once. Mine blooms once. That's it. In the first few years, it repeated but now no repeat whatsoever. It's about 20 years old. I have rooted dozens for people from this one plant, some which repeat, some which do not.

If you don't think a trellis is going to work, then you can try making the 4x4 post into a rose support by having your husband drill one inch deep holes in the post and inserting one inch wooden dowels with wood glue about 9-12 inches long to make horizontal "branches" about two feet apart. Then either use eyehooks in the ends or just drill 1/4 inch holes in the dowels to run twine or string through them to tie New Dawn. At least this should spread the plant out a little bit.Then maybe you can wrap it around the 4x4 post.

I have become convinced that ND is not suitable for an arbour unless you combine it with a swag and then diligently train the canes onto the swag. In late July we will be cutting our ND back completely, to the top of the arbour and starting over, swagging every cane of a suitable size from the begining. The consensus of rose folks seems to be that ND will survive the treatment. We didn't start swagging our ND until there was already a thick accumulation of canes on the top of the arbour and dangerous tentacles reaching out everywhere - those thorns are NASTY! Even with the swag, the volume on top of the arbour has grown, because it's not easy to work with the stuff up there because of the thick tangle of older canes - not to mention at least three different clematises... I am concerned at this point that ND will bring down the arbour/south alley gate if we don't do something about it! So it's time to clear the slate an start again. My advice is only go for it if you've got an appropriate set-up to control it and are willing to be diligent in controlling it (which we weren't for the first few years, and then it was too late...) Given our experience I really think the appropriate place for ND is trained along a relatively low fence (4' or so); tie it in to the fence as if the fence was a swag. A low fence would make it easy to work with it - as opposed to needing a stepladder in the case of an arbour. Good luck.

I'm finally able to access my pictures so I'll post a few here of the roses I mentioned. Quadra in my experience is at least as thorny as ND, but the flowers last much longer. Being a semi-double, you don't notice them fading as much and I've seen clusters last a good 2 weeks without getting ratty. I'd say mine that's maybe 7 or 8 years old blooms more or less all summer, taking a break in August as most of my roses do. Here's a shot after I finally wrestled him into an arch after a few years free standing: Here's my Colette after about 3 years, making her a young climber. She's survived both polar vortex winters, so I'd say she's fully hardy in my zone 5. Lunar Mist climbs quite well along the fence for a good 10 feet or more and is usually tip hardy for me. And even though my "not RdV" doesn't repeat, my Reine des Violettes is a great statement in spring and totally tip hardy every year. It would laugh off zone 4 winters too I suspect. The "real" RdV should repeat fairly well and it's apparently a little more of a purple cast than mine, which is a good thing in my world. Hope this helps - you have many good options. Cynthia

Diana, also check out the Awakening. More pink than white, but another great climber.

A few years ago I was going to order a New Dawn from RU, but Pat Henry talked me into the Awakening and I couldn't be happier with it. Very vigorous, blooms/reblooms constantly, winter hardy to the tips, etc... From what she told me, it is similar to New Dawn, but with better rebloom. Glad she talked me into it.

Hi Diana,

I've just put in a Cl. White New Dawn on one side of my new arbour. I'm hoping that in zone 5 it will keep the growth under control. I planted White New Dawn on one side and Night Owl on the other.

I'll be interested in what you decide to do.

Do I remember correctly that it was you who posted a picture of yourself enjoying a beer in another thread? I remember it because it actually made me laugh. I have told my friend who isn't a gardener that no drink ever tastes as good as the one you have after you have been working in the yard all day and you sit back to survey your progress (OK, a beer at a Cubs game is pretty good too).

I ordered my New Dawn from RU as well... Awakening is a possibility, it would balance the color on each side of the front of the house. I was thinking white because I planted a Moondance and a Huldine clematis near this area and I was going to continue the sweep of white. Hmmm...

I feel like I need a drink already. Thanks Matt.

I planted a New Dawn on each side of an arbor of similar size. Let me say that they are not kidding when they tell you this is a vigorous rose. I never winter protect it and the thing grows like mad. Still, I would plant a climber on each side of the arbor unless you want one side to be bare. I have not pruned mine much at the base and it gets pretty wide. I tie my canes in to the arbor using green flexible tape that I bought at the garden center.

My project has been delayed a week due to this...

My plan was to create a path along the north side of my house (the arbor is the entrance from the front of the house). This tree fell late Thursday night. That is my neighbor's driveway in the picture, they sustained most of the damage from this but I am going to need to wait until they get this limb cleared out since my north lot line is so close to their drive.
