Line trimmer options
Comments (7)I can directly compare the quality of the Husqvarna and Stihl split shaft offerings, because I own one brand, and my parents own the other. The shafts on the Stihl are the same across the whole spectrum of powerheads. The coupling on the Stihl is cast magnesium, and the drive shafts are solid steel. On the Husqvarna, the drive shafts are a spun steel flex cable, and the coupler is stamped steel welded to the drive tube. With a Husqvarna, probably being purchased at Lowe's, you will get a line head. However, all the attachments Lowe's sells are MTD, and not even up to Husqvarna's quality, let alone Stihls. With the Stihl, every attachment is professional quality. With MTD, you're looking at light homeowner use only. Stihl sells attachments for every task, but you don't actually have to purchase them individually. For instance, the only difference between the Stihl line trimmer and brush cutter heads is the debris shield. The gearhead and drive tube are the same. So if you get the line trimmer, you can convert to the brush cutter head in about 5 minutes for $20. Same thing with the tiller attachment. You can physically stick any of the YardBoss multi-motor attachments on the tiller gearbox. This gets you the powersweep for about $100 off if you wanted that. If you tell me what attachments you need, and what you intend to do with them I can recommend you the least expensive route to get there. Oh, and the Stihl blower attachment is not even a comparison to the MTD job. The MTD will struggle to move grass clippings, the Stihl blower will throw wet leaves across your yard....See MoreNeed advice on buying a chain saw
Comments (20)I bought an almost new "McCulloch" MAC-335 at a local auction the other day for AU$100, which is about half the price of a new one. The seller was the State Police department, so I assumed it was unclaimed stolen property. Unfortunately, I wasn't observant enough at the inspection to see that the chain-brake didn't work properly (i.e. I didn't start it). I only realised it was stuffed when I got it home and tried it... sometimes the chain wouldn't stop when I pushed the brake handle forward :(( As a chain saw novice, I initially thought the smoke coming out of the case near the chain's drive was just exhaust, but the smoke got worse after a minute or two, and then the chain-brake wouldn't work at all. When I looked at the casing on the chain-side, the sticker that the auctioneer had put on the case was bubbling and the case was melting! (I can only assume they put the sticker there to cover up previous heat damage to the plastic case!) Removal of the casing revealed a charred mass of melted plastic inside, which had seized up the chain-brake mechanism :(( To rub salt into my wounds, when I rang around for McCulloch spare parts, I was told McCulloch went out of business ages ago, and it would be nearly impossible to find any spare parts. I then found out that the McCulloch brand (in Australia) now belonged to Electrolux. When I rang Electrolux they told me they had sold it to Husqvarna! I took the saw into a guy who said he might have McCulloch parts from wrecked machines. He took one look at it and said it was in fact a re-badged Poulan, a brand name also now owned by Husqvarna! If I had read Dock's post on March 24 I would have saved myself some grief :( So off I went to a Husqvarna distributor and, after a bit of searching, he found out that the McCulloch/Poulan/Husqvarna parts I need are available for AU$80. The moral of the story is... Do your research before buying a brand name and buyer be VERY aware at auctions....See Moreold echo srm-2200 serial # 00008563
Comments (2)HI I have a small echo string trimmer which I bought in the early 70's...I use it every other week, during the summer. It starts on the second or third pull. I have replaced the spark plug every couple of years and never had it in the shop for anything. It runs great and does as god a job as ever. Best $100 I ever spent. Ditto for the echo leaf blower I purchsed a year after the string trimmer. GL, stan...See MorePoulan 3100 forrester 325 pitch 50 gauge 20'
Comments (1)Usually the carb. is leaking internally (cracked or gasket problem??)causing the high idle?? (dumping more fuel thus causes saw to race up) or it could be as simple as the throttle hanging up???. I would try close inspection of the linkage, the carb. inspection and rebuild if you haven't already????...See Moredavefr
