Magnolia seeds moldy during stratification

Hello--

Late last summer, I collected some magnolia seeds from the tree in my front yard (a common, pink magnolia). I cleaned the waxy coating from the seeds, and wrapped them in a damp paper towel inside of a ziploc bag to store in the fridge until planting time next spring. I checked the seeds today, and most of them are (at least partly) covered in white, fuzzy mold. I assume this means the seeds are no longer viable, but I figured I would check just to make sure before I throw them out. Thanks for any help/advice!
