Orange fungus on rose leaves... how can I kill it?

The leaves on one of my rose bushes started turning yellow and i didn't think much of it, but then more leaves started dying. When i looked closer there was this orange fungus growing on it. A week later i noticed it start to appear on another rose bush too. Can anyone help me with advice how to fight this fungus/disease?

That is Rust. If it does not rain anymore this season, with drier, warmer weather, Rust will go away until late September at least. It is a little worse this year because we had some rain in April.

Those leaves actually look like old foliage from last year. Old foliage often gets diseased as the plant shuts off connection to it in preparation for growing new foliage. If it's just on last year's foliage, you can just pick off all the old leaves if you want to avoid spraying fungicide.

Otherwise, you would have to spray with a fungicide. Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower fungicide is the most commonly available effective spray. Only use the fungicide, because you don't need insecticide. Fungicide will keep the new leaves from developing rust, but the old leaves are history. Fungicides prevent disease, they cannot cure it.

Whatever else you do, please quickly remove all the leaves with the fungus on them. The spores otherwise drop to the ground and then splash up when you water. I live in a cool moist coastal foggy climate and rust is a problem yearround here. The best defense is no rust spores on the ground, and you will generally find the infection moves up the plant. So you may have to remove all the leave below the first one where you find it -- that is fine, the rose will be okay. In fact, I have completely stripped plants in my mother's yard (where she had no idea what was going on til the whole plant was covered), and they came back just fine too.

It also helps to have fewer lower leaves -- take the bottommost leaves off your plant if they are within a few inches of the ground -- it helps prevent the splash up mechanism. In Florida that is why they use such long grafts on Fortuniana and other plants in that region -- to prevent the transfer of pathogens from ground to plant.

This has been a particularly bad year for rust for me, btw. I spray with everything alot, and I still have some. So just stay vigilant.

If you follow Citrus's instructions and do not over water at this time, it should be just fine.. You will get to know your tree well and it will respond to your care because you care and came here to be successful... The two main cause for twig die back other than being pot bound is over or under watering.. When you bring a tree inside, usually within a few days once it senses it is not in its favorite environment, it can take days or weeks for the roots to resume taking up moisture like before because they rebel and try to adjust..It is critical that at this time that the roots are in a very porous mix and not stay wet for days...Because growth has almost stopped, the roots can get damaged by rot. I always notice that at certain times my trees will all of sudden dry out slower than usual and stop taking up moisture as they once had outdoors..Once things resume as usual, usually within a few weeks, you will notice that you will have to water more frequently again.. It is important at this time that you do not under water... Hope this helps for the next time you have to do a drastic change to its environment or root disturbance.. This is Judy in CA: I just got the biggest laugh read all these rose Bush stories!! Been there done that! In fact one of my sons is coming over tomorrow with his chain saw to hack my four Cecile Bruner roses off at the ground. Then I will use the salt and boiling water trick and see what happens. I planted them seven years ago as a pseudo fence. Used poles and wires and they were beaut the first three or four years. Then I had to trim them sever times a week so they didn’t slap us in the face and stab us with thorns! Plus they were no blooming as before and grown over and into my neighbor’s shed( the pruning got away from her)!!🥴. So my project last sunmet was to cut them to fence height and keep them as small bushes. They had other ideas and I was pruning all the time again to keep them “in shape”! So this year it is bye bye. After the chain saw massacre, I will do as I’ve said plus use the black trash bag on top and pit a barrel with a different rose bush in it that is very well behaved and sm divine! I paved over one at my other house but lo and behold I noticed a “weed” growing up about five feet out from the paving in the middle of my ground cover and yes, it was the pesky rose bush trying to reassert itself. Don’t remember how I dealt with it but I did get rid of it without much trouble. I must have caught it early before it got too much of a hold. At least I feel better that I’m not the only one having this problem. Best thing- use pots for roses!!!

Put hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Dry your shower floor after you shower, and then spray each time until you get this under control. I use hydrogen peroxide to clean all of my showers. I spray it down really well and leave it for about an hour, then I scrub with a brush and rinse with the hottest water. When you see it fizz, you will know that it's killing something that is alive! You will see it fizz in the grout. I sometimes spray twice on the very fizzy places. When everything is completely dead, there will be no more fizzing. I use an entire large bottle of H/P every month to clean. It is perfectly safe to breath, unlike bleach products. It can also be used on stone and marble or ANY material, which bleach can not! Grout that is not sealed is a recipe for disaster in a shower. Many people ignore this chore. It should be re-sealed every year! SEAL your grout if you have it! You must make sure it is CLEAN and very dry (at least 24 hours) before sealing! If your grout is not sealed,... germs, bacteria, and mold will make their home there, ...rest assured!

I hesitate to say a hard pruning because I killed my Dublin Bay that way. I blew up your photo and I do see some growth here and there up the canes. I would suggest you start at the tips and clip off a piece looking for a good clear and moist greenish white center and work you way down removing only the wood that isn't healthy. Then wait a bit. It hasn't really been all that warm for very long and it might just need some extended warmth to kick start it. We have just come out of two successive bad winters and a lot of roses are sort of in shock I think.

Thanks you guys!! That does make a lot of sense because we had a lot of rain this year. I actually had removed the leaves and thrown them on the ground, but now I am moving them away from the rose bush completely as you suggested. Thankfully not too many leaves were infected, so i will just remove them for now and see what happens. Hopefully it goes away now that it's warming up. Thanks for your quick responses and help!
