Sprinkler - HELP

I presently have a Gilmour Solid Metal Head sprinkler; it was the most expensive I could find at the hardware store.

It works some of the time. I use it in 4 or 5 locations, then on the next location it hangs up and sprays in one direction only. I can't figure it out.

HELP !! Is there a sprinkler that really works out there???

Maybe I could buy it on-line. Chuck.

sounds like low pressure to me. the metal sprinklers need higher pressure in my experience. buy a cheap plastic one and it should work fine.

Thanks for response. Don't think it is pressure; hose runs directly from well head, really puts out the water. Have used cheaper models; something always seems to go wrong. Does anyone have a Brand Name that might be better??

shade, What type of plants or type of grass are you irrigating? Why the different time for the zones? Is this what your great installer suggested. The "Rule of Thumb" is water an equivalent of 1" of rain a week as a starting point. More as the summer heats up or the winds gets stronger. tm, Hardie Controller(how old?) and Hunter heads are respectable brands. Heads can be any brand. Hunter have a very good reputation but less expensive ones will do. Check what the model # of head is and check on the internet for the flow rate for that model. You will need to know your water pressure(zone operating pressure. Are these rotor heads or regular pop ups? The head in the down position should be low enough in the lawn not to be hit from the lowest setting of your mower. doubtful it is the PRV Stand by water meter and turn one of the good zones on. watch the speed of the meter turning. then turn one of the bad zones on and see if it is turning at approx. the same speed. If it is, then you probably have a pretty good leak and you will have to locate it by looking for a mushy spot. If the meter is turning much slower, then you probabily have a valve that is not opening all the way or a blockage. ( What I just suggested is based on the flow rates of the zones being nearly equal.) If there is not much water flow and you know where the valves are located, turn one of the bad zones on and open the bleeder on top of the valve for that zone and see what that does, then report back.

The bleed screw, when opened, allows the valve to open manually. You most likely have a electrical problem. Did you check to make sure you have voltage at the controller and if you do, do you have voltage at the wire where it connects to the solenoid. This is the first thing you need to check

As above stated, it could be pressure. Make sure there are no kinks in the line. We had the same sort of issues when we had a well.

Not sure if a cheaper plastic one would solve the issue. Better sprinkler manufacturers list the water pressure necessary to operate. The cheaper ones may list it but they also may not be as accurate. I can't speak to whether a cheaper one would work at lower pressure if that indeed is the problem. You can only find out by trying one.

Cheap ones don't work any better..probably worse. I've got both of them, and the metal works better all the way around.

the problem i run into with metal ones is that they hang up at the trip point when the pressure is low. the plastic ones do not. what i have noticed, and this was yesterday in the garden, is that when the pressure drops just above pump cut on point they hang. i had 2 metal and 2 plastic sprinklers fed end to end, the plastic ones last in line. the metals would hang for a couple minutes until pressure came back up, but the plastic ones just kept going.

I just replaced the tank, and have not got the pressure switch set correctly yet. maybe that is part of your problem as well.

Everybody relax. As stated above, it is not a pressure problem. Exterior water runs from the well head & pump, NOT through the tank. GILMOUR has been very cooperative with this problem; I'm getting a new unit.
Still would like a different Brand Name if any of you know of one.
