Using fertilizer in addition to compost?

My perennial and rose gardens are managed and maintain using my own manure compost (horse manure and pelleted straw bedding) as mulch. I put 2-3 inches on a couple times a year and maybe a shovel of manure around a particular bush here or there on occasion. That's been the only addition of nutrients I've done.

This year I'd like to try something new and add some faster acting fertilizer to the mix. I'm thinking I mostly want to give the roses a bump with additional nitrogen and maybe potassium. My soil already tests pretty high with phosphorus and I know I'm already adding that with the compost so am thinking I should stay away from additional phosphorus.

It doesn't have to be organic, but all things being equal I would go that direction.

What suggestion do you have? (Links to products are appreciated!)
