durostat two speed thermostat T152-2

Hi maybe someone here can help me out. I got this *corrosive environment 2 speed thermostat* from farmtek.com. I also got there 10 inch exhaust fan with louvers , then i got a motorized louver ...also from farmtek, The problem is i dont understand how to hook both these up the the thermostat. I think i got the idea of how to hook up the exhaust fan, but hooking up the louver motor to the thermostat, I just cant seem to understand it. In there catalog, it says it is meant to hook up both. But the intructions only show how to hook up the 2 speed exhaust fan, so my question is, anyone have this kind of hook up? and if so, could you be so kind as to give me some kind of idea of how to hook it up. I would greatly appreciate it...thanks Ron

I searched item number T152-2 and durostat at farmtek and got no hits.

Is the thermostat one where you plug the device into the back of the thermostat plug, then plug the thermostat into the receptacle?

If so, you might be able to just plug a 3-1 adapter into the back of the thermostat plug, then plug the louver and fan into the adapter.

no this is the kind you have to hard wire it. If you want to see this thermostat, goto farmtek.com and under catalog number type in this CR2031 . It has no piggy back or nothing, if it had that sure would be a lot simpler,..thanks for any advice... Ron

"Variable speed will make me more comfortable and is more efficient---still no explanation as to how" - In the summertime, a fan running on lower speed for longer times pulls more humidity out of the air. In the winter using the heat pump, you don't get the blast of cold air at start-up because the fan gradually ramps up. These are the "more comfortable" part. Since it is a DC (direct currrent) motor, it costs less to run than the typical AC (alternating current) motor. This is the "more efficient" part. Not sure that the variable speed motor will help you at all with floors seeing different temperatures as Daddo stated previously. Ceiling fans will help this and so will running the furnace fan all the time in the summer. The key is to circulate air thru the house to try and equalize temperature. "Variable speed is a gimmic that actually costs more to operate." - This is Bob Brown's opinion. They cost more to repair for sure, but you have to do some experimenting to figure if they cost more (based on run time, power consumption, and cooling effect). I chose not to get a variable speed with my new heat pump. The air handler that I bought has 3 fan speed settings so I get to play with only 3 speeds. The Goodman variable speed air handler has dip switch settings for 4 fan speeds for each mode: heat pump/ac, heat pump + electric back-up, and electric emergency only. It also has a trim adjust dip switch of +15% or -10% CFM for the 4 settings for each of the 3 modes. For this variable speed motor, running the unit in "fan only" on the thermostat sets the fan speed at 30% of the heat pump/ac setting. You get a lot more to play with with variable speed motors. Ok I had a different tech show up this morning to check on my complaints. He found a 'Y' wire on the compressor was always turning it on high (should have been Y2 I think). He also found on the furnace that the 'BK' wire wasn't connected correctly. Now it *is* shifting gears on both heat and AC ;-) However, I wish the AC low speed blower was slower. For comparison of the different modes, I am holding my Radio Shack db meter up to the air return. Here's what I have: everything off - 48 db fan only - 65 heat low - 72 heat high - 78 ac low - 76 ac high - 79 Also, from low to high, at the outside condenser, the db increase about 10. I would really like the ac low to be as low as the heat low, but the tech said the ac will always be higher. He said he called and talked to a factory tech to ensure he had things set up correctly. He said he could adj the blower lower with the dip switches, but would only do so if I signed a waiver. No thanks on that. In the furnace manual is a chart of airflow setting vs dip switch setting vs ext static pressure. I don't know how to grok that table, but it shows Low as 350cfm/ton, Normal as 400cfm/ton, and High as 450cfm/ton. That's all I got. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I had to talk them into selling me the 2-stage compressor unit, so they weren't trying to up sell me very hard, which is usually a good thing. I asked multiple times about it being set up to run both stage on heat and AC and was told it would, seems it won't the way currently configured on the AC side, and not the most effective use of it on the heat side. If I re-run a 8 conductor wire from T-Stat to furnace, how many conductors should I have running out to the AC compressor?

Nathan, I doubt you would hit even $500 gas bill where I am in Katy, Texas for the simple reason I am on electric heat and I don't come anywhere close to $500 electric bill. Last winter was colder than normal and I might have brushed $300 for the whole winter season. A furnace rated above 80% efficiency (for heating) for my area are simply not worth the expense, the money is better put toward a more energy efficient air conditioner. Air conditioning for my market (Katy, Texas) can be as much as 10 months of the year. It's more common to replace furnaces here in the summer than the winter, if you need some perspective. (IE: the AC can not cool without the furnace, but the furnace can heat without the AC.) What justifies sending 20 percent of your fuel out the exhaust? 20% of what? If you spend $300 for heat, that's a whopping $60 a season. x 20 = $1200 that's if you could find a furnace 100% efficient. But you won't do that... best case is 97% efficiency. So you will save $51 a season using the above logic. These furnaces come at a premium. You will never recoup your so called waste. 90% you save a whopping 10%. = again $300 for heat. You save $30. As pointed out by ionized there is the possibility of condensate water freezing. However, even this is not a problem in my area (It's almost always above freezing here). I have a long standing customer of mine with a condensing furnace. (Installed by builder of the home). There has never been an issue with condensate line freezing. (It has clogged up though, with slime) so there is yet another expense that you wouldn't have with a non-condensing 80% furnace. What you think you are going to save, depends heavily upon the climate in which you live. Low use appliance simply will not recoup what you think you are wasting.

Have you tried wiring the exhaust fan wire twisted together with the shutter wire to the same terminal? This should work as long as it doen't exceed the AMP's it's rated for. A shutter pulls very little probally less than 1 amp. Of course you will need extra wire as your fan will be at the opposite end of the greenhouse from your shutter.
Also you could call Farmtek. They are good about helping with things like this. I have called them before and got help right away.

I have included a wiring diagram below of a similar connection using two seperate Durostat thermostats. I used a 24 VAC transformer and control circuit because I wanted to locate the thermostats some distance from the circuit breaker panel and didn't want to run the 110 wiring to the thermostats. This way, I can use multiconductor 24 gauge cable (furnace thermostat type) to wire the circuit and it is a bit safer around the wet areas. I also wanted a two speed fan operation with a motor speed controller being activated at the lower temperature and the fan running full speed at the higher temperature. I am working on an improved model that has a time delay that will open the shutter before allowing the fan to start. Please observe common electrical safety procedures if you plan on using this information and use a ground fault interrupter on this and all circuits in the greenhouse to prevent unsightly electrocution.

Although it complicates the wiring a bit, the 24VAC design described by cottagefarmer above is superior in terms of safety. I use 24VAC power and relays much like he has designed above, but instead of two separate thermostats, I use a climate controller. You can get a relay box to house the relays and keep them dry. I got the relays at a local electrical supplier, just ask for standard 24VAC relay.

thanks cottage farmer, you seem to know a lot about electricity..I know the basics, but this is just to confusing, ill figure it out, or call farmtek i guess, thanks for your help, but it still dont make sense to me how to hook it up, but i did print out your instructions, maybe it will make sense tomorrow, or next day. But if anyone out there has exactly the same situation i got, your help would be greatly appreicated..thanks guys...Ron
