2 stage Thermostat needed ???
Comments (5)Thanks again Mike, I can "see" it now the way you explained. I wish I could bump up to a 2 stage AC but it's not gonna happen. As you can see I was able to work the 2 stage furnace and now I want to maximize the setup. I saw that my Utility provider has a promo going in RE: elec conserving with an AC unit. "Cool Customer program" a FREE state-of "the-art digital display programmable thermostat with large touch screen, installed at no extra charge (a $300 value) that can be programmed to fit your personal schedule and comfort level to save energy and money; plus a one-time $50 credit on your electric bill. Mike I think you might be JCP&L ( i feel for you ) but this incentive reads as follows: " if summer energy demand in our service area is extremely high, your central air conditioning compressor may be cycled on and off at 15 minute intervals. Cycling helps to minimize the impact of high energy demand ..." They actually have the ability to control this through the hook-up. Sounds a little big brother-ish but I almost don't mind that scenario since I will still be benefiting when the system is cycling down by less elec usage. Thoughts ???...See Moresingle stage or two stage out door unit
Comments (3)carl first, I have never been a big fan of two stg condensers AC or HP because of the price and marginal comfort and operating cost improvement. the main exception would be in a zoning application with zoning controls. the XL15i HP is one of the best sgl stg condensers on the market. there are two major reasons I like the XL15i pumps. this winter, the Atlantic states, South and Southeast were hit by major snow/ice storms. The XL15i has Trane's proprietary top which helps the condenser fan from freezing up. There were a lot of HPs that were simply overwhelmed by these storms and had to go to straight emergency electric backup. And then there is "electronic demand defrost" feature which eliminates unnecessary and nuisance defrost calls unlike time/temp defrost. I do recommend a staged heat strip. I know Trane has two sizes, a 7/12 KW and a 10/15 KW. You want a stat that has "dehumidify on demand" feature like HW VisionPro IAQ. as I have said before, good equipment, good install, good ductwork system will make a happy homeowner. I refer you back to my checklist from your other threads. using an old thermostat on either of these systems is a mistake. you want a stat that has "DOD" feature. IMO Good Luck!...See MoreWill 2 stage a/c with standard thermostat ever go to high stage?
Comments (7)WOW... Why and how would your HVAC guy configure a new system like this??? And why would you LET HIM?? The 315 is a wonderful furnace... had you gotten an Evolution A/C, then the Evolution Controller t-stat would have been perfect. It will tell you exactly what your equipment is doing and allow you more flexibility than you would ever need to run things however you want. Unfortunately, the 127 is not Evolution compatible. But since you already have your A/C, what's done is done. Your HVAC guy is right in that when multi-stage A/Cs don't get hooked up to intelligent t-stats, they take it upon themselves to determine what stage to run. The circuit board in the unit does this by taking into account what variables it can read by itself... like how long it's been running, how often the t-stat is requesting it to run, possibly outside temp, etc. From that, it determines what mode to best run in. It's not anything even close to having an intelligent communicating T-Stat like the Evolution Controller, but it's better than nothing. I think the simple answer here is to go spend some money and buy a multi-stage aware thermostat. That is a no-brainer to me. Bryant model T6-PRH is one option... and you can find it yourself on E-bay for $200 or so. Or I'm sure there are a bunch of other options out there....See MoreIs my two stage compressor really using both stages
Comments (8)If you have a thermostat with menu's, check to see if you have basic and advance setting buttons on the stat. I have a 2 stage cooling system and I have these. Here's how I get to the menu to check to see what cooling stage my compressor is in. Yours might operate in a simular fashion. Hold in the advance button for 10 seconds. A menu called "Install/Service pops up, highlight "Service" and select it. Another menu pops up and amongst one of the selections, there is one called "AC Status" - select it and the info you desire will come up. This is assuming you have very simular features as my Bryant thermostat. Now on another note, Its possible your compressor is behaving like mine. I can force it into high stage by dropping the temperature down 5 degrees from its setting and I would have to leave it there until a comfortable humidity level is reached and then turn it back up to the regular setting. But the system will not automatically go into 2nd stage during hot weather like its supposed to. These two stage cooling systems with some exceptions will always start out in 1st stage and when extreme heat exists, it will switch over to 2nd stage cooling. I suspect that is not happening with your system and if so, then it sounds like a fault between the thermostat commands and the compressor. Watch your technician closly, he may force it into 2nd stage, do some other checking and then say he cannot find anything wrong. Well, you tell him that it will not go into 2nd stage automatically (when high temperatures exist) and that you expect him to fix it before you pay him for the service call. This is the situation I am facing with my Bryant dealer. I had to call the Factory regional manager about this and I expect a reply this week. Good luck with yours....See Morearnoldlayne
