Help plant is looking sad

My plant now looks like this

Haven't change much other than now it is the heating season. the soil is very moist. I don't know what type of plant it is so I don't know what to do to help it out.

Not sure what it is, but that is probably the problem. Also looks like it's sitting in a pretty dark spot.

i cant focus on the leaves at that distance ...

does the pot have drainage?? ...

too moist.. is as bad as too dry ... try to let it start drying...

and adding a liquid fert is not going to help ...

and if its permanently placed in the middle of that room.. other than for the pic.. its not getting enough light... especially in WI in winter ... though sticking it in a cold window.. sopping wet might not be good either ... cold soggy media.. leads to rots ...

are there cabbage roses on that chair.. i think i own the couch version ...

Hi Tina, Dont cut it back! The bulb will put out quite a bit of energy to produce new leaves,reducing your chances for blooms next year. Give the pot a good soak in a bucket of water but dont put the water level over the bulb. You dont want to get water in the top of the bulb,it can cause rot. Cut off the spent bloom scape,give it a warm,sunny window till summer and put it outside. Lora

It's a Schefflera. I think it's the bigger one, S. actinophylla. For a potted indoor specimen, I think it looks great! The angle of the dangle of the older leaves looks normal to me. I bought 6 this spring from Berries Unlimited. They arrived with a white substance on the leaves. I figured it was either powdery mildew or spray residue. I e-mailed them pictures twice and asked if it could be spray residue. They never responded to either message. I could see where they might not want to guess about it being powdery mildew, but they should know if they sprayed them or not. It's odd. When I send them a message asking about buying something the response is within hours. Anyhow, the leaves have fallen off some and regrown, some have been ok and never did have much powdery mildew on them, and a couple look like they're dying. I'm in the north edge of zone 7, so I shouldn't be too optimistic about them surviving here. Varieties were blue smoke, blue joy, and blue moose.

I have this plant too, and it spends about 5mo inside because of the climate I am in. Otherwise, it is outdoors, in full sun. I am sure sunshine is more 'potent' in your location than mine. It is more compact and more colored (and squirrel or chipmunk chewed on couple of leaves !:) It got soaked quite a bit this year as we had much more rain (more often - often few times a week), but it is in gritty mix and has excellent drainage: They could/will grow about 1-2' tall, but I never had one growing such tall stem - unless it was blooming, just as shown in 2nd photo posted by Crenda. Blooming rosette may die, but should have few offsets - I can see couple on your plant. They could grow also on the stem. I never gave it any fertilizer. If my plant, I would give it more direct sunshine, and also added more perlite to the soil. During winter, I keep it indoors under CFL lightbulbs. I had them bloom under lights.

The pot it is in does not have a lot of drainage. the person that had it before had plugged the drainage hole. It is in front of a large west facing window. Unfortunately in my condo I only have north or west windows.

I will try letting it dry out a little and keep you posted.

Can the drain hole be unplugged, or the plant moved to another pot? Over time in that condition, a toxic level of a multitude of substances (especially if tap water has been the norm,) will have built-up in the soil.

You can add another pic by replying again, if you would like to continue to try to ID it. Don't think anybody can tell from that pic.

I would repot it - the pot it's in now is too big, which explains why the soil does not dry out. Also, some plants do better with a bit of crowding, that's why they recommend going up only an inch or so in diameter when you repot a plant.

you say not much changed ...

then talk about a prior owner.. a change in locations.. windows that face the wrong way .. etc ...

did the plant get carried outdoors.. w/o protection when it changed houses??? .. in the cold??

for whatever reason.. the roots are either rotting or rotted.. and the plant is struggling to cope ...

repot in a much smaller pot ... check of the root mass ... and let plants near dry in between waterings ... i do it by wieght.. to tell when dryish ... and increase light ... i can not stay in the middle of the room ...

if you are not all up for that.. go spend $5 on a new plant.. and be done with this one ...

when my plants get to this point... there is a 50/50 shot they will recover... and it wither becomes the goal of my existence to heal it.. or i give up .;.. lol ...

and w/o an ID.. i dont know which ... YOU.. should do
