Name That Plant!

Tree: Description, no photo

It stands at least 30 ft tall, has very light grey/silver bark that is relatively smooth, no leaves at this time (Christmas) and is dropping copious amounts of dark purplish/black ovoid fruits with a large ovoid seed and very thin skin. The fruit smells faintly of grape and the inside looks very much like a grape with a greenish veiny look to it. The taste is very sour like lemon though. It's on a river and it is growing in a very damp area surrounded my sweetgum, bayberry, cypress, maple, water oak, and cinnamon ferns.

Brave man, tasting an unfamiliar fruit in the wild!
My guess--from my reading--would be Sour Gum (Nyssa sylvatica). Another possibility would be some form of American Persimmon (Diospyros).

America persimmon would not be expected to be purple etc. Seems like a good manual or two on the wild trees and shrubs of the region would be of use.

The plant has no real drainage. No wonder the poor thing has flowered only once in 13 years. They have to water it sparingly. The other plants inside the store front are Aglaonema and Philodendron which appear to be growing fine. It's truly a case of plant torture on the vine. The Pandorea should go outdoors in summer. It's not receiving enough sunlight.

Linda - hard to say what you get. WM lately doesn't put any name tags on anything. It can be from Anthoflores - Product of Canada - and they are not registered and have their own marketing names - like their hybridizers came up with a new clone XYZ1088b - and their marketing department decided to call it Laguna or Jennifer or Kitticat. ( check Harster greenhouses site for names ) Check Optimara site - they have this type names. Better- make a pic of your new baby for all of to enjoy and maybe come up with some names. carol ann, I was just looking up Warsaw Nike after taking pics of it this morning. I have been raising clems for about 6 years and have about 30 or so. I have a notebook containing the original tags from the plants and printed info sheets with pics from the most comprehensive website I have ever found. It's called Clematis on the Web. There is also a lot of info on American Clematis Society. The reason I was looking up info on WN is because my blooms are also a dark purple. Go to Google Images and key in Warsaw Nike clematis. Not persimmon. But the Virginia Tech dendrology site lists 4 species of Nyssa, and two of them have fruit an inch or longer. And they all like swamps. Maybe it's one of them.

Ogeechee Tupelo, Nyssa ogeche

FWIW the other two are Nyssa sylvatica and Nyssa biflora, and it looks like all 4 of them are found in some part of Florida.
