Check on the Rose Gallery - there was a recent thread of Austin pictures. Be patient; it's big.

'Queen of Sweden', 'Molineux' and 'Perdita' are very upright, with more of an HT growth habit than your typical arching Austins.

'Bishop's Castle' is a definite nodder in this garden.

Prospero.
A relatively small, upright bush. Continuous-blooming in Southern California, if not cut back hard.
Fragrant, too.

Thanks peachiekean, I have looked at that thread, most of the photos were bloom shots and a lot of the whole plant shots showed heavy nodders, there were a few good leads though (Like Geoff Hamilton)!

I think Tamora, Prospero, Perdita, and Geoff Hamilton looks like good choices- I love the look of Queen of Sweden, but it says it has little to no fragrance- can anyone tell me how true that is? And has anyone grown William Shakespeare 2000?

Sharifa Asma. I only have pictures of her as a baby and single blooms. I've grown her for one year. It has strong canes and fragrance out of this world. The leaves curl.

Harlow Carr, Sister Elizabeth and Carding Mill. The first two are smaller and very fragrant pink roses. CM is larger and never stops blooming, apricot colored and only lightly fragrant, but a great hot weather rose.

Modern roses with fragrance always seem to have a multitude of issues in our area. Perhaps, not in California, Colorado, or Alaska, but in the South they seem more disease-prone and certainly aphids and thrips find them quite tasty and especially if they are light in color, but they are not the only mischief-makers. There seems to be a short shelf-life with blooms of fragrance and an array of insects and fungi that are as attracted to them as I am, and let's not even say Japanese beetle.

I am not sure what is in the DNA that makes them smell but it also predisposes a bloom to rot more quickly and turns the water nastier, faster, in a vase. Perhaps, that is among the reasons, florist roses have no fragrance, need for a long shelf life and clean water.

Don't have a photo of it, but Sophy's Rose isn't a nodder--kind of upright like Tamora.

The Prince - it is upright and it doesn't nod. Very prolific in my garden.

The Generous Gardener does not nod, it is extremely upright with a very pretty shell pink flower. Tradescant is also strong, it does get big and it is definitely a shrub but it is covered with red blooms and it really is a striking rose bush. Gertrude jekyll is another upright rose and it smells soooo good, very thorny though. I do have pictures but I don't know how to post them :( I really need to get my daughter to show me.

There are numerous complaints about Geoff being stingy with blooms. It is one of the more disease resistant Austins.

The Prince is upright, a great purple with very nice fragrance. It will stay inbounds if space if a problem; about three feet tall( nice pix by other member). Gert has some upright with some nodding on 7 ft canes. It will have a few BS spots but the frag. is unmathced except for Bishops Castle, very frag. but no BS problem. Again some will nod and others on top will position just fine for cuttings, the best !

I love this rose. It doesn't bloom a lot, but it blooms enough to be well worth growing because the blooms last forever and change colour almost every day. The scent is strong, the way you think a deep rich red rose should smell. A great rose.

Wow, these pictures beatiful! Now my hardest decision will be narrowing down this wonderful list you all have given me. Tamora, The Prince, Queen of Sweden, Prospero, The Generous Gardener, Carding Mill, Perdita... I may have to get all of them and just make places for them! Who needs a drive-way anyways, I'll just knock that out and I'll have plenty more space! :)

Pushing this up because of interest...

Hi, I just saw the roses mentioned above at the Huntington Library, and thought I would share that of the list above, Geoff Hamilton, Molineux, and Tamora were beautiful, and Queen of Sweden took my breath away. Carding Mill and Gertrude Jekyll, not so much.
I did not find the rest so appealing, maybe because they were all planted in full sun, who knows?
Golden Celebration and WS2000 were amazing, but I don't recall how much they nod, definitely not as much as Abe Darby for sure. I think GC has both nodding and upright flowers, something that was mentioned in a post above. I didn't see Tradescant, but of the darker roses, only WS2000 had a clear beautiful color, not The Prince or Prospero. They were all a very blue red, more hot pink or purple than I thought they would be. WS2000 was more hot pink than purple, but the best looking of those three in Pasadena, California hardiness zone 9 or 10, sunset zone 20 or so. In other words, it gets HOT here, and sunny.

Mary Rose does nod. My only complaint. .....Dave
