John Deere LX172 blowing diode

I have a John Deere LX172 that blew the diode that runs from the switch to the battery. I can "jump" the wire and the mower runs fine. When I replaced the diode the mower started and ran for about 3 to 4 minutes and blew the diode again. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I it safe to just leave the diode out, connect the wires and use the mower?
Thanks
