OK, this is a silly post, but the word "rhodologue" was giving me fits. I bought the rose so I just had to know what it meant. I couldn't find too much on the web, but as far as I can tell, it is basically an antiquated French term for "rosebreeder" or "rosarian".

You folks probably already knew that, though. I should have asked y'all first.

Apparently, Jules G. worked on the Malmaison rose garden. I wonder if he was responsible for SDLM?

Weird, I was thinking about the word as I was looking at your post title. I guess it's a French word fashioned from Greek roots. Rhod- refers to the rose plant/flower and also to the colors pink and rose red. Rhodes is the island of roses. Rhododendron etc. Logos is word, reason, knowledge, system. So he was a rose-ologist.

Jean Beluze of Lyon, France, bred SDLM in 1843. Queen Josephine died in 1814. I'd never heard of your rose, and wasn't surprised when I found out it was a tea.
So many roses, so few frost free days.............I am growing SDLM in a pot, though. It doesn't really like being inside, but it's putting up with it.

Okay! Here you are, "ye of little faith" ;-) I rummaged around and found the bloom below on my RJG a few minutes ago (the bloom I last showed was disintegrating and not going to open any more than it had, being hemmed in by the buds around it and beat up by last weekend's wet weather). Note that it is not much different from yours (a few more petals, perhaps) and, I should note, this one does have darker reverses on all petals. I would predict, next spring, or perhaps a few more springs from now, you will see blooms on yours like those in my original photos (she does that every year, here, reliably), if all goes well. It is typical for teas to have more sumptuous blooms in spring, from what I see. The diameter of this bloom is 4.5".

I presume "Flamingo Tea" is "Flamingo Gardens' Tea"??? I suspect the full name has been lost somewhere. Assuming that's it, though, it has an interesting history. It was given to me in the early 1980s by a man at Flamingo Gardens, just west of Fort Lauderdale, along with a large number of roses (mostly common Chinas) collected in Barbados (NOT Bermuda). At least that's my memory of how I acquired it. Not knowing a better name for it, and realizing it was obviously a Tea, I named it "Flamingo Gardens' Tea." Then a year or so later, I saw the guy again, who commented on the rose in my greenhouse. What was that? What a wonderful rose! I reminded him that he had given it to me as one of the Barbados collection, and he said no, he had never seen this rose before in his life, and he definitely did NOT give it to me! So now what? That's where the ID has lain for all these years. I'm quite certain he gave it to me; he's quite certain he did not. In any case, it "appeared" in the FSC greenhouses. It's a nice, average Tea, more to the yellow or pink shades than Safrano, but definitely with some brown in it. Many "Tea people" (Phillip Robinson, Gregg Lowery, Ruth Knopf, Charles Walker) have looked at it, but no one has recognized it. So it remains our mystery. Who did you get it from, Sandy? As for Rhodoloque JG, it's a big, hefty bush with big flowers. (note the spelling of the word, with a "Q," not a "G." I like them both. Hope you will, too.

Mine is new to me this year, grown in a pot. So far the growth has been very different than any other of my teas, upright like an HT as mentioned above, and the blooms are very different - they are huge and of heavy substance with a high petal count - they do not "quill" like some other teas. I also detect a strong fragrance not typical of a tea rose. It is great for cutting, holding well in the vase, as would be expected with the heavy petal quality. I love it as you can tell. Of course it remains to be seen how well it will develop as a shrub for me but I would grow it just for cutting alone. I wish I had a photo, just went out and saw three buds, one just opening, but it doesn't show the full beauty of the open bloom which to me is wedding bouquet perfection.

Thanks to all of you for your very nice comments! Jim, I really hear you. I am not looking forward to the time when even in Southern California we will have no roses at all anymore. I am glad my photos have been giving you some pleasure. Carol, happy Birthday!!! Here is one more picture just for you: Our Lady of Guadalupe bustopher, Christopher Marlowe is a tremendously changeable rose, depending on the season, water, fertilizer etc. I wouldn't say that mine is a particular typical photo of this rose. If you go to HMF I am sure the photos of Christopher Marlowe there will give you a more accurate idea. iris_gal, I am happy that you seem to enjoy my pics! Ingrid, you are so generous with compliments. Thank you very much! I am glad that you liked my photos. Beth, Pretty Jessica is simply a very pretty rose and easy to photograph. Here it rained on the weekend, too, and I cut everything that was blooming for vases indoors. So not much left out there in my yard either. The rose season will come undeniable to an end soon. Michaelg- thanks for the word analysis- it makes perfect sense now.

Kaylah - growing roses in Montana must be a real challenge-cold as the devil and DRY, right? Are you growing Gallicas, Damasks and Albas there? How do you get them to winter over in such a harsh climate?

Apparently, Rh. Jules G. worked on the Malmaison rose garden in the early 1900's to try to re-create the rose garden as it existed in the time when Josephine lived there. As you say, he was not the breeder of SDLM.

Jules Gravereaux created and planted one of the most famous rose gardens in the world, La Roseraie de l'HaÃ¿ in a suburb of Paris. That garden still exists.

"Souvenir" is in the sense of "memory," the Malmaison garden being long gone. The name SDLM carries a lot of weight and shows how important Beluze knew his rose to be. How astonished he must have been that first summer when the thing kept blooming and blooming and blooming with flowers having that matchless combination of size, form, and fragrance. Too good to name after some random rich lady.

I have 2 SDLM - the bush and the climbing. Both are just babies, bands purchased from VG. I can hardly wait until they are big and blooming. When I saw pictures of SDLM, I thought "How perfect! that's the one!"
