Need comments by owners of small electric log splitters

I have seen a lot of discussion on this subject but very little input from actual owners of such splitters about their performance.

Anyone here using one that would let us know how well they work?

I have been splitting firewood with a wedge and sledge and sometimes a maul but have often wondered if any of the small 5-6 hp splitters actually works and endures. It would be nice to find an easier way to split the wood for a while.

Last year, I came across several cords of free wood and rented a 27 hp splitter for a little over $100. It was worth it because I split it all in one day. I had to get it out of my driveway quickly so I could get my cars out of the garage.

Lowes is closing out their "Taskforce" 5 HP electric splitters for $269 and I wonder how long this would last and whether it will split 18-20 inch logs (ad says it will).

I cut my logs to about an 18 inch length so they will fit in my wood burning stove. The diameter is usually more than the 10 inch diameter that this splitter will cut but I figure that I could cut off smaller pieces with it until the diameter was 10 inches.

I'm in Germany. Only difference is that mine is powered w/ 230 volts, but makes no difference to the splitting capability. I've (actually my wife did it for me a couple Christmas' ago) discovered a whole new world. Little extra handling but doesn't drain you as much as swing a sledge. Especially nice if you set it up at work bench height. I clamp mine to a plank, set 2 sawhorses up on either side of a container on back of my tractor and let the split wood drop in (do the same for a wheelbarrow, wood box, etc). Wife likes to use it too (big plus cause I can set the heavy stuff up the first time and she can split it as many times as she wants). Knock out a pile in a hurry when you don't get a backache from bending and it's small enough to take inside and work out of the weather.

Thanks for the response. They have a money back guarantee too and have not received any back but they haven't sold many either according to the staff. I guess I may get one since they are discounted and if it doesn't work, can return it.

It is supposedly a 5 HP 15 amp motor.

I read all the old posts and the Ryobi seems the way to go. I'm just curious if I can get one without paying $70 shipping from the website and how to return it if it fails. I use the neighbor's 20 ton gas splitter right now. Anything that the Ryobi can't split, I'll just throw into his wood pile or save it until I set up the gas splitter. I'm sure that the Ryobi will do 99% of the alder I need to split. The gas splitter pops the alder in half after it rams it about 2 inches. So the full 20 ton strength of the gas splitter is needed only 1% of the time. I think the electic will be quicker and without the noise, fumes, starter fluid, pulling on the cord, adjusting the throttle, checking the oil, hitching the trailer, hearing protection, filling the gas tank, air filter changes, etc. Mark

Apparently, the gas powered log splitter sold before I got there. Yesterday, I went to look at a 6 Ton electric splitter by a very large manufacturer with a good reputation. I had never seen an electric splitter except in ads and once in a Lowes store. After seeing their ads and DVD, they looked pretty good. I took your advice and took along a log about 13"-14" in diameter and about 16"-18" long. This is within the specs from that company. We put the log on the splitter, started to split and the cutting wedge went in about an inch and stopped without splitting the log. We tried several more times and never were able to split it. So much for electric splitters for my needs. I am sure they are fine for lighter work though. It did splitt a small section of a 4"x4" post.

I have not found a Hydraulic Tech close but I did try to e-mail one (plus that's what landed me at this site). The tank has plenty of fluid in it and it works very good. I wish you could copy and past the address below in your very top "http" address window and open it (to see and hear the splitter). I feel someone that has a similar splitter will see the problem, "if there is one". An in-line noise reducer is another idea I question if it w/n affect the performance of the splitter. I was told that excess hydraulic line would cause it to be loud. I also notice that some other hydraulic equipment is just as loud, "which could be normal". Is it a way to send a private message? I could send you the file as an e-mail vs on this message-board and it would open easy. I got back to the splitter and added guard-rails to protect the filter, added a flat plate on the push guide's front vs wood wedging the rod,s end (restricting some play) and etc maintenance. I contacted the donor to Confirmed Over Kill On Fluid! The Log Splitter was Initially Manual and had grown to Hydro before I continued it. It had to be a Monster Manual Bottle Jack splitter and I'll respect it as a 10 ton with the Hydro Cyl 3.5" ID X 24" X 2" rod. Plus, due to the 4X4X.25 rail X 1" pin and adjustable wedge. I H/N found one that compares. "This Explains All I Thought About The Splitter". I felt it was originally manual with the small wheels and front handle. Except, the plate for the tank and pump were throwing me off. The Donor who is a machinist and perfectionist explains the plate that I thought was Factory added (due to how it was formed and welded). He explained the 5 Gal Hydro Fluid tank could have been 2-3 Gals. The 5 Gal tank was the easiest to find vs welding up one or using the 4X4 rail as the tank as many. I'll still test it good with 4 Gals (which has never shown any signs of heat (Why?), "at the pump's 3 GPM rate as below", plus specs below in the same range or above this splitter suggest 3.5 Gals which sounds correct. Too Much To Spell/Grammar Check! LOL. loger PS. dmullen, how are you fellow SoCal?!

So long as you get its not a gasser, you will love it. PA inlaw, a studly 71 can almost keep up with my 30T MTD C'man gasser with his Dr electric 6T.

If a log stalls whack it with a hand sledge, also start tough logs with the end touching the wedge slightly inclined, and nibble on them as you described.

ps he and I are splittign mostly oak from the cuyamacas, Dr really kicks butt on pine. one thign the elec dont seem to do is sever tenons too well.

That sounds very fishy. I think you would need an exotic voltage to get 5 HP out of 15 amps. What is your wall socket voltage? Check the info on the electric motor again.

1 HP equals 746 Watts.
5 HP equals 3730 Watts.
Watts/Volts = Amps.
So 17 Amps @ 220V, ASSuming 100% efficiency.

Looks like 5 HP from this machine would be unrealistic. 15 amps X 120 volts doesn't even come close to 5 HP.

I was thinking about all these posts and realized that I typed it wrong. It is a 15 amp motor but advertises it as a 5 ton splitter which it may be.

It is embarrasing to make such an error but I did learn how to calculate HP from the amperage.

Sorry to have wasted your time.
