Need comments by owners of small electric log splitters

I have seen a lot of discussion on this subject but very little input from actual owners of such splitters about their performance.

Anyone here using one that would let us know how well they work?

I have been splitting firewood with a wedge and sledge and sometimes a maul but have often wondered if any of the small 5-6 hp splitters actually works and endures. It would be nice to find an easier way to split the wood for a while.

Last year, I came across several cords of free wood and rented a 27 hp splitter for a little over $100. It was worth it because I split it all in one day. I had to get it out of my driveway quickly so I could get my cars out of the garage.

Lowes is closing out their "Taskforce" 5 HP electric splitters for $269 and I wonder how long this would last and whether it will split 18-20 inch logs (ad says it will).

I cut my logs to about an 18 inch length so they will fit in my wood burning stove. The diameter is usually more than the 10 inch diameter that this splitter will cut but I figure that I could cut off smaller pieces with it until the diameter was 10 inches.

I'm in Germany. Only difference is that mine is powered w/ 230 volts, but makes no difference to the splitting capability. I've (actually my wife did it for me a couple Christmas' ago) discovered a whole new world. Little extra handling but doesn't drain you as much as swing a sledge. Especially nice if you set it up at work bench height. I clamp mine to a plank, set 2 sawhorses up on either side of a container on back of my tractor and let the split wood drop in (do the same for a wheelbarrow, wood box, etc). Wife likes to use it too (big plus cause I can set the heavy stuff up the first time and she can split it as many times as she wants). Knock out a pile in a hurry when you don't get a backache from bending and it's small enough to take inside and work out of the weather.

Thanks for the response. They have a money back guarantee too and have not received any back but they haven't sold many either according to the staff. I guess I may get one since they are discounted and if it doesn't work, can return it.

It is supposedly a 5 HP 15 amp motor.

I'm impressed after my 30 + years of a splitting sledge/wedge (good exercise initially). Clarifications: 1. Electric means my hydraulic sys is driven by a 1 HP electric motor vs gas etc. 2. Generally, 4x8x4 is a cord period but with new smaller fireplaces /wood stoves comes Face Cords, 4X16X your needed length (my opinion vs knowing). Very few fireplaces in this area can use 24" long wood. 3. The splitter is almost too impressive and a recent fluid check showed no noticeable contamination. 4. I will be curious regarding to fluid heat that I h/n noticed vs electric motor heat in North TX heat. loger

Apparently, the gas powered log splitter sold before I got there. Yesterday, I went to look at a 6 Ton electric splitter by a very large manufacturer with a good reputation. I had never seen an electric splitter except in ads and once in a Lowes store. After seeing their ads and DVD, they looked pretty good. I took your advice and took along a log about 13"-14" in diameter and about 16"-18" long. This is within the specs from that company. We put the log on the splitter, started to split and the cutting wedge went in about an inch and stopped without splitting the log. We tried several more times and never were able to split it. So much for electric splitters for my needs. I am sure they are fine for lighter work though. It did splitt a small section of a 4"x4" post.

i just bought a powerhouse electric 7 ton log splitter. used it about 5 hours yesterday. split probably a cord and a half. (this was taking it off the trailer , splitting, then stacking it, so lot of walking) I was impressed with the splitter. I have been using a maul for the past 2 years and this splitter is a real nice piece of equipment. dont get me wrong it wont split 18 inch diameter stuff or anything but it will handle 12 to 14 inch if it has been seasoning for about 2 months. The powerhouse splitter sits close to the ground and is only 100 pounds so the first thing you want to do is build you a little table to get it to the right height. next there are 2 handles you must hold down to make sure you dont have you hand in the splitter. I made a bracket to hold both handles together. then i made a handle so i didnt have to bend over at all to activate the forward motion of the ram. next you need a good heavy duty 12-2 extension cord about 50 feet long. 19.5 amp motor needs 12-2 and must have a 20 amp breaker. I never tripped the breaker once. when i got a big piece it wouldnt split, instead of sitting the log all the way down in the splitter, i would hold the end up on the wedge so it was only biting about an inch or inch and a half of the wood. it would start splitting then back off on the ram arm and put the log all the way doen in the splitter. it would then split the log. this is for home use and for 400 dollars i cant complain.

"alphonse, Please explain more on your statement." Sorry for a late reply, I was out of town. You have the gist of my comments though. Bigger cylinders and heavier steel tolerate the higher system pressures or the developed pressure and racking from any misalignment between cylinder mounting and the tracking during extension. The larger the cylinder diameter (force area of the piston) the lower the system pressure, though that equates to slower flow. "I felt the bypass at 2,500 on the 3,000 psi gauge basically showed built-in protection in the hydraulic system." Yes, you need a pressure relief valve. On the splitter I built which has a 5" bore piston, the relief is set at about 60% of the cylinder rating which is plenty of force but conservative of all components. Some reliefs can be adjusted to give greater pressures but without knowing any ratings bumping pressure up can be playing with fire. "When needed I run the 1 HP motor on a 25' 12-3 (12 gauge) extension w/o feeling the extention getting warm, is that heavy enough?" Should be. The longer the cord, the greater the voltage drop which will "starve" the motor, causing overheating and possible failure. 220V gives an advantage there, the transmission wire can be smaller though consumption is unchanged. Tangential splitting and the ramp are good ideas. My splitter has a table that the ramp hooks to and allows big stuff to be repositioned without having to pick anything back up off the ground.

dmullen, how are you fellow SoCal?!

So long as you get its not a gasser, you will love it. PA inlaw, a studly 71 can almost keep up with my 30T MTD C'man gasser with his Dr electric 6T.

If a log stalls whack it with a hand sledge, also start tough logs with the end touching the wedge slightly inclined, and nibble on them as you described.

ps he and I are splittign mostly oak from the cuyamacas, Dr really kicks butt on pine. one thign the elec dont seem to do is sever tenons too well.

That sounds very fishy. I think you would need an exotic voltage to get 5 HP out of 15 amps. What is your wall socket voltage? Check the info on the electric motor again.

1 HP equals 746 Watts.
5 HP equals 3730 Watts.
Watts/Volts = Amps.
So 17 Amps @ 220V, ASSuming 100% efficiency.

Looks like 5 HP from this machine would be unrealistic. 15 amps X 120 volts doesn't even come close to 5 HP.

I was thinking about all these posts and realized that I typed it wrong. It is a 15 amp motor but advertises it as a 5 ton splitter which it may be.

It is embarrasing to make such an error but I did learn how to calculate HP from the amperage.

Sorry to have wasted your time.
