greenhouse to non greenhouse

the problem i keep having is moving my plants from a greenhouse to the outside transplant, when i take them from the green house environment its like they go into shock and die in 2 or 3 days. any ideals on how to prevent this?

i use the greenhouse to start seeds, (works much faster and better) then let them reach 6" to 8" tall, then try to move outside but they die???

You need to harden then first.
The wife and I raise plants from seed every year.
Never had a problem but we do harden them off first

I think the problem may be that if they are still tender when you take them from GH to outdoors, it's may be too great a shock from the warm & humid of the GH to drier, windier and perhaps not quite as warm as you may think, outdoors.

Tender young plants usually benefit from a transitional period in cold frames, to harden them up before they go into the ground or are left in pots, exposed to the elements.

If all of your seedlings are of the same stage of development, once they are of the size to transplant, you might open up the GH to some cooler and drier conditions, to allow the GH to serve the same purpose. Or, use caps over them, at least at night, until they have hardened.

I bought a 6 X 8 one about 12 years ago. still standing here at the JerseyShore, even thru Sandy. BUT one of my windows blew out. we tried taping, caulking, to no avail. it's now sitting in its place on top on the greenhouse but with a stiff wind it'll blow off again. I don't want to spend the money to replace it, but I would take any suggestions as to what else I can use up there. you really can't screw or hammer since the parts are all plastic. ugh. also yes, it gets over 100 in there on any given summer day. so I go in there basically in the spring and fall. I have an outside cat that uses it for shelter. I can winter over some perenials in pots and start seeds in the spring. also looking to make it cuter in there. that's all I got. thanks!!

With your 2'x 3' structure, you will want to completely open it up during full sun days. Since your back door is of a good size, open it fully. If it is still too hot in the day, you may want to put something over the top to provide some shade to keep the temperature below 90 deg. Actually any thing, even newspaper, will help cut the heat gain in your relatively small structure. Get a thermometer and if the temp. is going over 90 deg inside, put on some shade. Keep adding more during the day if necessary to keep the temp. below 90 deg. if possible.

One thing a GH will allow you to do is alter temperatures, humidity, and light exposure. The link I have added is just a general example of an evaporative cooler. Basically, water is misted through your wall. As far as what to grow, that's not a hard question. What produce do you eat the most of...start with that. What produce is least available locally...grow that. Can you grow anything that can be stored for later use (potatoes, carrots, onions, shallots, etc...) grow that. Of course many of these are not necessarily GH candidates, but hopefully you get the idea. Then there's the germination side of things. You will be able to get heirloom seeds started earlier and in better conditions with a GH. At any rate, think first of your own consumption, then think about things you'd like to show off to friends (e.g. your very own Orchid), and if so inclined, something you could sell at a local market (I have Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms on logs, but they wouldn't do well in your outdoor environment, but could do very well in the controlled GH environment.) There are likely cheaper options for initial price. But over long periods the cheap option will likely fail when needed most. And cost per hour could and likely would be higher over long run.

Are you hardening them off? Are they drying out, desiccating, burning in the hot sun? How about chilling? The wind? Dog urinating on them? This has been a cool dark chilly spring. I hope you're not taking them from the warmth and protection of a GH straight to the outdoors!

I start hardening mine off by leaving the GH doors open longer each day, lowering the temp and then moving them to a protected area out of the wind. I never let them dry out.
