Yes, thats the one. I did see the other post said 16' but this is the one she was refering too. I want to hear from someone who has tackled these plans. Ther has been alot of questions about attaching the panels but this one has grooves or notches in the wood. Sounds hard to me but my son said it is doable but I'd like to talk with someone who had tried it..

I am currently in the process of building the better homes and gardens 'dreamhouse greenhouse' if that is the one you are referrring to..and believe me, it is GAWGEOUS so far!

I maybe wrong on the 16', it may be 14..we are currently waiting on the twinwall to arrive..

Anyways, if you read the plan, i believe they want you to route out a channel in each window frame so the windows can be installed..it maust have sounded like a lot of work to my son who is first framing the structure up( the sides of this greenhouse are to die for) and then installing the twinwall with another series of 2x2 frames..I'm sure i don't make any sense..

I've had a hoophouse for a year and had so much fun growing eveything imaginable in it, that all winter i stared at these plans and waited for the time to clean it out and start on this..

The stucture is quite overwelming at first-looks like you have a little house in the backyard, and really you do..but once it was painted, which we did to protect the wood, it looked more like it fit it with the wooded area behind us..

Yes this is the same greenhouse. I am planning on adding two feet to each end. Ask you son if the framing of the panels is a better option. We may look at doing that too.

I presently do not have a greenhouse at my home but I teach horticulture at the local community college and have a huge greenhouse there. I only teach there to be able to use the greenhouse so when mine is ready I am out of there.

I really enjoy propagation of plants and that will be my primary purpose. I chair a fall and spring plant sale for Master Gardeners so I grow many things from seed for this.

I'm sure I will have a million questions as I get started. My son will be doing most of the work and it has been hard for him to get here from Birmingham since he is working and involved in alot of things there.

I too enjoy the propagation of plants from seed and this is the first year(i'm a full-time floral designer until recently) my garden is almost completely from seed..lots of work has been going on here since early january!

The better homes and garden magazine featured this GH by the owner and it seemed awfully done up 'fancy' to me..I am very anxious to get it all up and running and see how it works..with flats and flats of seeds, side by side!

I purchased plans from Sun Country...only 12.95 and I got them right away (on download) Lexan samples are also available. One thing.... you have to have tools and not be a novice woodworker. You're going to spend over a thousand dolars on material so not having the know how and proper tools (i.e. thickness planer)could cost you time and $$$

I looked at those plans and they are very nice. I already have the blueprints that I ordered from Better Homes and Gardens (bhg.com). It is very similar in construction except for the height and the location of the door. I'm thinking that the magazine once did a feature showing this one and I would like to obtain a copy of the magazine.

Carol, I'll find out the issue it was featured in..I too want mine customized, but i also want it more workable than fancy..

Right now, my concern is flooring..they call for brick pavers in the drawing but i think this will have to wait till next year and mulch may be this year's floor..

As far as cost, I'm into this for over $2500 so far..

And yes, I second the post that you cannot be a novice woodworker her..my son did it, not my dh..we all just helped him out and will continue to do so..if it was my husband doing the woodworking, I'd still be looking at the truckload of wood in the back yard..vbg..

I hope you can find the issue for me. I want mine to be functional but decorated also.I already have a little garden house that used to be a play house. It is very attractive on the outside but has managed to turn into a storage house..
I hope you can get pictures soon. Having a web page would be awesome. I will start some photos as soon as we get started. We measured and squared the area yesterday and discussed some concrete footing. The ground rarely freezes her so it will not have to be dug very deep.
As to the flooring,I'm going with pea graves with some large pavers for a path. I might try setting some brick in a design. It is very plentiful here and not that expensive. I know my biggest expenditure will be the twinwall polycarbonate. I don't know where the best place to order it from will be.
Oh yes, I have tomatoes that I started from seed. 21 plants. One plant has a blight so I might pull it up. The rest are doing great.

My son is going to build the GH for me in his spare time. He feels confident he can do this and he has small contracting experience (decks, remodels,and storage sheds).

I'll lay odds that with even a little experience if hes bright he sould be able to draft a plan that will suit your needs better than anything from BHG

Well, I like the looks of their GH and all of the headroom. I also prefer wood frame.
We do plan on doing things a little different because their instructions seem overly complicated.
What don't you like about it?

Oh my goodness! That is great. I can't wait to see the next pictures and how you put the windows in. I think its really cute how you can't wait to put you colorful pots on the sill. Your DH looks really proud too.

Carol, tomorrow i am going to the big flea market in this area to try to get a cow weathervane for the top of my new GH..I thought i'd like that better than the architectural gingerbread trim the plan actually calls for. I was out garage-sale hunting and found a GREAT service door in someones trash that we all think might just serve as a great insulator and a great out-side door..tomorrow i will sand and paint! The carpenter-son said it will work!

(My trade for all my son's hard work is babysitting his two beautiful children on saturday nites..my gawgeous grandchildren..like i can't do this?)

Good luck on the weathervane. You are at a point that is so exciting.
I don't know how I will finish my roof. I may do the trim. I have a squirel (sp) weathervane on my little garden house that I found at a craft festival type of thing.
Don't have any grandkids yet to trade services for. I wish I did.
I bet the door you found will look good. I haven't bought anything yet but I an so ready to get started. Maybe in one week.

cembh, go to Photobucket.com . It's free to download your pictures and then use the 2nd tag line. Copy and Paste to your message. It will not show up til you hit preview so you can resize it if need be. If they are bigger than 800 resolutions it distorts the message.

Where were you cactusfreak when we spent DAYS trying to do this? My DH who thinks he is a GEEK but eveidently NOT, says you have to have an offsite server to download the pictures to if you want to create the URL..so much for the use of my web page..

Carol, we got the weathervane after an hours searching..its about 3' tall and needs a dash of solder on its tail, but the N,S,E,W is already an oxidized copper blue-love it! Between that and the door in the TRASH, I an hitting a thousand this week! In fact, got the door painted abouthalfway-doing it green, same color as the house..I want outside FLOWERS to stand out, not the color of the GH..

They assured me the glass was shipping today and will be here by friday..we have big plans to try and install it this weekend..

This ought to get interesting and I wrote down cactusfreaks instructions and hope to have some more pictures for you soon.

Ruth, sorry I usually post how frequently. But you said your DH was creating one for you I just thought that's how you wanted it. And yours is much more impressive. You DH was right about the off-site server. It is basically the same. I also use MSN that has some free posting.

Thank you Cactusfreak for the instructions. My problem now is my modem is so slow to upload pictures to photobucket. I think that I will burn to a CD and take it to work and upload them to photobucket (faster modem there).

Actually all I have pictures of for this forum topic is the location for the GH. I have some beautiful pictures of the yard I will place on some other topics.

Are you growing banana trees from a root? How do i go about doing this? I am a floral designer by trade and pale pink 5 foot ginger used to be one of my favorite things to work with..as well as all the tropical leaves..I'd love to start a banana tree right in the middle of the new GH..

Oh my god what a lot of work this has been installing the twinwall! It has taken us all weekend just to get up the twinwall..It has turned out beautiful but i must tell you this project is a LOT OF WORK and cost WAY MORE than originally estimated so beware!

We installed each twinwall piece and framed itlike a window..i will have pictures for you tomorrow..i am so pooped..

As for the bananas. I get most of them Tissue culture. So very few roots. But as they get larger they form a corm and then pups to the side and these can be cut off.
Their are several dwarf varieties that would be great for your greenhouse. And a few regular ones under 12ft.

clich in the GW? My reply to plant_trader101 completely disappeared and this one posted twice and hour apart.

I thought this plan would be a challenge. We are going to pour our footings this weekend and frame some. That is of course if it doesn't rain. Last weekend we had Tropical Storm Arlene to delay us plus my son can't come just anytime.
I would guess the biggest expense would be the twinwall. I have not priced the lumber but it might be high also because of the hurricaine last fall. This area is still in recovery.

hello... had to get in on this one....love your GH's...but my concern is the size.....is that BIG enough.. if you guys are like me....I never have TOOOOO many plants...as you carol I live in Alabama.. south of Montgomery...I have a nice piece of land with a large pond....but I have 5 20-24 foot plant tables.. and have EVERY flat spot on the home front with plants that I started from seed...rare and very different plants...but I dont have a green house....ha ha ha. Thats why I was on this site to see if anyone has built the size I need.. a covered football feild would do..ha ha ha I am going to TRY to send a picture of ONE of my plant tables....O.K. I cant figure out how to send a picture on this thing...Help.......

Jody ,the one I am planning on building is 10x16. I am adding 4 feet to the original plan. I guess I don't start as many plants as you do. I have been filling 2 20 feet tables at the college GH. I'm sure I'll just have to become more selective to adapt to my space. I figure my GH can accomodate some upper shelving since it is so tall and this can hold some of my potted things.
I know they say you should think big and you will always wish you had built bigger but I've really studied how much maintenance I want to commit to and I think that this one will be just right. I'll only be able to use the GH from about October through March. Way too hot the rest of the year. I am in Dallas County.

yep....I thought about the heating bill....then I got upset..ha ha ha but my plants are worth it...my son is 17 and I still have plants that I got in the hospital...my bird of paradise is only 12 ft tall...and my husband calls it everything but a child of God in the fall and spring...to old to move plants around.. going to hire some help this year...if you run across a very large green house for sell... I am in the market...ha ha

Tonite I promise pics..

10x12 is big enuf for me..we are in chicago and i'll be lucky to keep this heated in the winter..its cold and very windy here..I can see this stuffed to the brim..zone 5 is not very accomodating to winter growing..

I also didn't want to overdo this yard..i wanted this in proportion to the rest of my house and garden space..or my husband would have a fit!

I got a great sign for above the doorway which says my motto:

I love this greenhouse!!! I think I will order the plans and hope for a miracle! It was featured in the January, 05 issue. Yours looks awesome, congrats on a great job.

Sounds to me like everyone is out busy with their gardens..Every morning when i get up I just go outside and just sit in my GH and then water the plants..I even have a special shelf for my IPOD and its player so I can have music in the GH..

I have been buying holland pavers, brick by brick so i can do the floor with brick and sand by the end of the season..I figure I will need about 500 or so pavers and want to lay out a good pattern..

I added some hanging plants and window boxes on the exterior and the GH is loking so adorable.

How are the rest of you doing?

We are coming along fine on the GH. We are almost through with the framing. I have ordered my twinwall, fans shutters and lights. Working on the heating system plans now but I ran out of my GH savings so the heat will wait til end of September. My next step other than installing everything will be to get my water to the GH and my electricity. I have to run it about 100 feet. I may be doing everything backwards but what matters is I get throught before mid Oct. It is way too hot to do anyhing before then.

Today was a killer. It was around 100 degrees at my house with the heat index above 105. We were outside all day because my son was here. I am exhausted.
I am getting really excited and I know you know the feeling.

How is you greenhouse? Are you through? Have you cuted it up?
Oh, by the way I bought the Jan 2005 issue which feature our GH. I found it on ebay. The one in the issue may be too decorated for me but I do definitely want whimsey.

I was cleaning up a spare room today and low and behold there was the greenhouse article! I looked out the back window and I swear, I like mine better, just because it is MINE. It pretty much looks the same, except for the color and the doo-dads..

Its hot here-very, very hot-like 102 on sunday..We still need a door and a floor, but like you, i am in no hurry as long as it is done before october...

My GH is PACKED-I got hooked on dwarf musa basjoo bannas and have 10 in buckets, along with my fall tomato crops and every other damn thing i plant..You can just about get in it..I tell you what, tho, that twinwall is really something-as hot as it was, it still was a bit cooler in the gh, becasue it was blocking all the UV rays..

I need to give my family a break on this project now-they worked very hard on it.

An update as I ride out my second Hurricaine this summer.
We are all framed and have stained the frame a beautiful "blue spruce" green. All of the twinwall is in the garage waiting on a visit from the son. He can only come for a couple of days every few weeks. I also have the fans and vents. We have put pea gravel in for the floor. It has been incredibly hot and humid this summer as well as many afternnon showers/storms. I'm not in a hurry because I really could not use it until around October. Anyway, with no walls it won't blow away and there is still alot of hurricaine season left.
I have been collecting alot of seed from my yard ass well as the forums and ebay.
Have you been able to enjoy yours? I know it gets pretty hot where you are too. Click on my name and send me an email.

Just purchased the BH&G GH plans, and read this thread - sounds like a great project! Would like some ideas:

1. What is total cost? materials, permits, uitilties
2. What wood did you use? What paint system? Stain, enamel...
3. Would suggest a gutter front & rear to prevent erosion and dirt splash on walls. Could collect rain too.
4. Any general advice? Where are the snakes?

I'm about to buy my first greenhouse; one I seen at the Pensacola Jr. College spring garden show in Milton Florida. It's certified to meet Florida wind codes (which was important to me since we've been hit by two hurricanes and two tropical storms in less than a year. It's metal frame construction, with UV protected double wall polycarbonate, a bench all the way around, thermostatic fan, wired for electricity with wiring inside metal conduit with receptacles and overhead light, overhead rails on both sides for hanging baskets, shade cloth on one side attached to curtain rings that can be pulled aside, all for $3300. There's a $180 fee for delivery, set up and tie down. You can put it on a gravel, brick or concrete floor or they will build you a pressure treated floor for $2.50/sf. The builder and his wife are both master gardeners and members of the local garden club. They've been working and improving the design for a couple of years now. I'm really impressed, don't know about you. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll give you their phone number and/or directions.
