question on hollyhocks & Jap. beetles

Each year I have a problem with Japanese beetles on my rosebuds & hollyhock flowers, making them unsightly. I avoid pesticides as much as I can in the garden. Please don't recommend hand picking these guys off, I have a full time job already. I know that my hollyhocks will often rebloom late in the summer after the beetles are gone, is it logical to just cut the hollyhocks way back & just wait for that 2nd bloom? They are nice with that rebloom, not a lot in my garden is blooming then. Same with hibiscus. The roses really aren't as bad usually. I've gotten rid of all my larger flowering roses, & apparently the beetles just don't care as much for the smaller flowering ones. I hate to give up the hollyhocks completely, they remind me of my childhood.
