Protecting perennials from groundcovers

I have a setting where I had planted some sweet woodruff two years back. I really like the plant, and its spreading nicely. However, I just learned that it can be invasive and choke out other perennials.

Is there a way to protect perennials from an aggressive groundcover? For example, could I plant my perennials in clay or plastic pots (in the ground) to protect the roots from the sweet woodruff? Or would some sort of edging work?

I had considered using groundcovers elsewhere in the yard and want to make sure I am keeping my perennials as safe as possible.

Thanks!
