township yard waste question

Here's the deal. The township has a lot that is open once a week for residents to bring their yard waste to -- you just drive in and dump your leaves, branches, etc.

You are also free to go and get the resulting compost yourself if you want.

I guess it's cold compost -- I don't think they turn it or anything. (I could be wrong) Just several hills of material.

I keep wondering if I should use it or not. I'm sure there are seeds -- I live in fear of poison ivy, among other things getting into my garden. Not to mention probably pesticides, etc.

But am I missing out -- is there a way for me to get good safe stuff? What do I do, -- try to dig out near the bottom of one of those hills?
