Troy Bilt Horse Tiller

I have found a man that has two troy bilt horse tillers (Old Style) for sale. One has the original Tecumsah engine and one has a new Briggs engine on it. He has them priced between 300 and 400. I am going to look at them on Saturday. Anything specific I need to look for? He said he has a place to run them and they are in good shape. Is this a fair price for one of them?

Price is in the eye of the beholder. They probably cost $1000 new. The models made after about 1980 had a removable rear tine section and a PTO lever on the left side near the driveshaft. Attachments were available. Look for the ends of the tines to be flat. Worn tines develop a tapered sharp edge.

The lever that goes from drive, down, and reverse, up and neutral moves the engine up and down. The iron casting to which the engine is mounted moves along two steel rods, vertical. There might be some slop here, but not too much is OK.

Look at the area where the tines are bolted. There are oil seals. Look for excessive seepage behind the bolt and also for excessive movement sideways in the tines that would indicated a seal leak, loss of lubricant, or a worn tine bearing.

Frosty, we have one of those and it's very slow and ineffective. We never use it. The only reason we have it is that it came with the powerhead, along with rototiller, log splitter and generator attachments. The rototiller and log splitter work great! There is probably something much more effective available for chipping/shredding. Here's a tip for you. If your Horse is old like ours and has point ignition, a Kohler replacement ignition coil is about $100. A Tecumseh coil is a perfect fit for about 1/4 the price.

Here's what my 1978 Horse book says about "play." "Lack of any side-play of the tiller shaft ... indicates the cover is too close to the tiller housing. Remove the cover and add to the gasket thickness - .040 inch total thickness should relieve the pressure on the bearings. TOO MUCH SIDE-PLAY CALLS FOR LESS GASKET THICKNESS UNDER THE COVER. THEN, .020 INCH TOTAL GASKET MIGHT DO IT." I can't find where the manual tells about replacing gears in the tiller, but it does mention mention checking the keys (shear pins) when replacing grease seals. SOME rotational play is okay, but 3/4" side to side sounds like too much. My Horse has about 1/8" side to side.

Perhaps I totally misunderstand what you are talking about because I have seen (here) some odd transmissions, but generally the long lever and connecting framework I assume you are talking about would never need removal. Perhaps a little grease would help. One is supposed to do that from time to time. It just raises or lowers the engine to tighten the belt. The only thing that needs adjustment is the little yellow or white block with the semi-notch that needs to be loosened and slid down or up. The engine housing can get cruded up on the big sliding pins that it raises and lowers on. You can undo the set screw bolts that lock the pins, and drive them down and out to be able to clean and re-grease them. If something else, then you will have to wait for others.
