Best gloves to prevent blisters?

I was using a garden hoe today with some basic all leather gloves and tonight I find some blisters on the inside of my thumbs (ouch). At times I encountered some roots and brought my tool from the top down to cut the roots. A motion like those contests where those loggermen compete to see which one can cut a log in half faster.

My palms are blister free though. The blisters popped during my working, though.

What kind of gloves do those guys use?

jellyman, so far i haven't seen a document to support pine blister killing peaches either. i have a reccommendation to email a large commercial orchard here in the region that has been operating since shortly after lewis and clark and they may help shed some light. i will just do that and will report back if anything interesting turns up. canker is something i will have to try and prevent. several sources have pointed that one out. by my estimation i am in a zone 6 climate here. been taking some night adult courses for fun and have met a lot of local gardeners. ( gardening and harvest type classes) several who were born and raised here and live nearby insist we are in zone 6. i still try to err to zone 5 for the most part. i do live on a south slope which helps. here in this little region there are microclimates from 3a to 6 b. for every person who can grow a peach theres another who can't even get them started. while discussing peaches a lady in class was bragging how she got over 800 pounds of peaches from 3 trees this year. bet you could give her a tongue lashing, shes now dealing with a huge broken limb from the weight. but she was happy--she still harvested all the peaches on that limb ! i do have 2 peaches in and some seeds planted for fun, but i think i will only add 1 or 2 per year until i see how it goes. am definitly looking at the cold hardy cultivars and will work my way up from there. i know i won't get peaches every year ( like my apricots) but will enjoy them when i do. decided on a pf24c flaming fury for next spring. ( if i must have another it most likely will be reliance) had a couple grown locally this past season and were the best tasting peaches i had in a blue moon. the size of softballs to boot. thanks for your info. on a quite baffling question. regards, wildlifeman

If, like me, you are a fan of the Atlas gloves discussed above, you will love the new Atlas NT370s. If you are not a fan, you may find that you also like them. They are made of Nitrile, the same substance of which many surgical gloves are made. At 20 years of age, I was a bare-hands gardener. For one, I loved the feel of the dirt on my hands; plus, gloves were so awkward that I invariably ended up taking them off. As the years have progressed, however, I have tired of the ailments and incidents that come with bare hands. So, over the years, I have gone from rubber to cotton to heavy leather to goatskin to latex surgical to Nitrile surgical, the latter of which I was very content with. Then, in the spring of last year, a booth at a local gardening event was selling nothing but this one model of glove. I put one on my hand and that was it, I was sold, it was sooo comfortable. Not only were they thin and light, but the nylon knit backs were very soothing and supportive of my hands. No, I don't work for Atlas nor any other business which sells these gloves. I love those gloves! Use them every day, at home and at work. And I haven't heard of any difference between the colors (although that doesn't mean there isn't one)... However! There is another glove that I love just as much for different reasons. They're called Foxgloves, and they're patterned after ladies' evening gloves from the 1950's. Cotton/Lycra blend, tapered fingers, more flexible than anything else I've tried. No, they won't keep your hands dry or protect you from thorns, BUT they'll keep dirt from under your nails. And for transplanting tender babies or pulling teeny weeds, they're superb. They're a bit pricey, somewhere near $25.00, but they go in the washer and air dry quickly. Hold up beautifully. Come in all kinds of colors like Fuchsia, Iris, Moss, Compost... even a Tulip Red so you'll never lose them in the garden. You can also get them with little rubbery dots all over the palm for increased traction. I use my green "Tool Grip" gloves for watering, heavy mud-moving, and carrying plastic pots or trays, and the "Foxgloves" for everything else. I keep both pairs on a glove "leash" - one end clips onto a belt loop, the other end onto the gloves. I got that little gem from the A. M. Leonard catalog. Happiness is having toys that work well!

Black blister beetle help!!

The flour-lime mixture has been used for over 100 years for leaf-chewing plants like grasshoppers and blister beetles. Some people say it works, others say it doesn't. I haven't tried it. I used plain all-purpose flour dusted onto tomato plants to deter grasshoppers in 2003 and couldn't tell it did much,but that was an epic year when they were eating fruit tree bark, fruits on the tree down to the naked pit, etc. and maybe I waited too late to use the flour. Theoretically the flour and or flour/lime mixture gums up their mouthparts and possibly their digestive system. The flour alone may work, but the lime contributes by, presumably, drying inside of them...sort of like Plaster of Paris. In my garden it didn't seem to deter the blister beetles, grasshoppers or anything else. I always feel conflicted about the blister beetles. I'd prefer to leave them alone and let them prey upon grasshopper eggs, but if I did that, they'd destroy what's left of the veggie garden. Between the hoppers and blister beetles, the beans are being eaten down almost to the ground these last few days. Dorothy, I don't think Tim would like it if I abandoned the remaining tomatoes and let the blister beetles have them, but I have quietely, more or less, done just that. I'm just trying to keep the beetles off the container plants up by the house. Out in the garden, the beetles can do as they please. It is too hot and I am too tired, and we are starting to have more frequent fires. There's only so much you can do about any pest in these temperatures any way. Dawn

Blisters are caused by rubbing. I think a tighter fitting glove would help some. Or you could try some things that hikers do for their feet:

1) Wear a liner glove. The liner glove should fit snuggly and be slippery. The outer glove will slide along the surface of the liner and reduce the friction and rubbing on your skin

2) Apply moleskin before or when a hotspot appears. Moleskin does pretty much the same thing as a liner but can be used over multiple days and selectively applied. That fuzzy outer surface provides a slick layer to that the outer layer can slide instead of grabbing the skin

3) Change your hand position so that your thumb does not wrap around opposing your fingers. Wrap your thumb in the same direction as your fingers around the tool whenever possible. This will reduce the amount of rubbing you get from the handle.

Thanks. I never heard of using a liner glove. What fabric should the liner glove be?

Also, if I go with a tight fitting glove only. What fabric?

Pop in thin liner glove in Google and plenty of them pop up.

For me the liner sounds too bulky of a solution. If I were doing it, I'd try the grip mod and moleskin solutions before the liner glove.

I get blisters in the same spot every spring. I have a couple digging jobs and I feel a little burn but I don't stop to take care of it. They rip every time and I tell myself I'll be more aware next time. 20 years on and I'm still getting the same blisters :).

Onward : As Mas has indicated a tighter fitting Glove will reduce the chance of friction causing you your sore hands. I have used snug fitting leather gloves with a light thinsulate lining which allows air circulation to reduce sweating but also allow some movement between the leather and inner lining as Mas has recommended. I replace these gloves every 3-5 yrs since I routinely use them while splitting and cutting wood .
