Black Magic Rose

Hi. Last year I planted a Black Rose bush in the same spot I have previosuly planted a Veteran's Honor Rose bush, which did quite well, I just didn't like the color of the flowers fading to pink. The Black Magic did very well last summer, I pruned it in Oct 2008 down to 7-8 inches and in mid-March it started to sprout new leaves, etc. Yesterday I notices 1 major cane's leaves had dryed up and the base of the cane has turned black. The rest of the bush is still healthy. We have had a dry Feb & March, but last week we got more than 1 1/2 inches of rain.

Can you tell me what is wrong and how to correct?

Just cut the bad cane off to the bud union. The wind might have cracked the cane and you didn't see it.

For some reason, I lose a lot of canes on Black Magic to die back. I attribute it to canker. Each year I worry about losing the entire rose, but it keeps on going. I really like this rose and I am going to give it lots of tlc this year. But I just can't get it to be a big wide bush. So, to make a long story shorter, maybe this rose is just susceptible to this problem? Hope yours makes it. It is really a nice rose--keeps its color, does well in heat.

It grows here in MN zone4a. However, it does not thrive. Even with heavy winter protection it is almost dead after the winter depredation. It lacks the vigor for a quick recovery. I keep it because the few flowers I get are very nice. I expect that one of these years it will not make it through the winter. It is maybe five years old and smaller than when planted. Even with an erratic spray schedule, it shows no disposition for spots,PM or canker. Regards, Charles

Thank you for all the kind words and the good wishes with rain. If my roses can understand, they are sure will appreciate it. On the other hand, I think sometimes they do. One time I was planning to SP one of my roses and suddenly it performed so well that I changed my mind, LOL. @sara-ann: good luck with finding your Black Magic. I just wonder why J&P doesn't let other nurseries to propagate it even though they couldn't do it well (quality of the bare roots or meeting the demands). @canadian_rose: Peter Mayle's fragrance is my favorite. @prettypetals: Judy, I normally like strong colors and I "blame" you for showing me your beautiful light color roses. That's the reason I gave Marilyn Monroe a chance, and I'm glad I did :)

Many HTs don't like to be big wide bushes. You might consider Artisty, if you are looking for a big wide bush for the garden. But, I normally don't see exhibition form.

I mispelled Artistry as Artisty.

You could also plant a couple of bushes close together to simulate a wide HT--2 feet spacing works in our climate where we get real winters and a six month growing season.

Black Magic has the genes to get big!! Mine was about 8 feet tall before I pruned it. It's by far my tallest HT.
