We cemetery garden volunteers are so grateful to Jeri for this catalog, one of a series of treasures.

No, we don't ship the roses! We'll have some more for sale in conjunction with our 20th anniversary symposium, scheduled for Oct 12-13-14. We are just about ready to get details about the event on-line, and are propagating in anticipation already.

Our Open Garden also offers tours and a chance to mingle with many other rose lovers. If you come, say "hi," if you can get my attention! (It's a really busy day for me, but lots of fun.)

I believe I saw Benny at Burlington yesterday after the Friends of Sequoia event, Jeri. The nursery was AWESOME! MANY plants in beautiful condition, many in bud and bloom. I would love to post photos, but she's asked that any photos posted be her's, which I will happily accommodate. Burling takes great pride in her nursery and wishes for it to only be presented in the way she prefers, which is her prerogative.

I was thrilled to see what her selection included and delighted to see she has stock of my Lauren, Too Cute, Super Jane (the ONLY source for Super Jane, period!); just about any poly you could want; new roses, old roses, bush roses, climbing roses...everything in beautiful condition and buds popping everywhere. Von Sharnhorst, a Peter Lambert hybrid lutea, I'd read of but never seen flowering. Hers are! Unfortunately, I was VERY good. I only brought home a peach flowered pomegranate; a beautiful dwarf elm for bonsai training and a liner of Pretty Lady (RUDELY healthy for breeding). The elm has already been potted and received its first 'trim'. The prunings will be struck for rooting in a little while. I'm definitely planning on a repeat visit soon, by myself, so I can spend time wandering and doing some more heavier duty shopping! Kim

Moreover, you know that Durst Plot I did NOT make you take home? Guess where THAT went?

We need to manage to get Burling's catalog of roses on line somehow. Let's make a project of that, 'eh???

I could do the catalog part. We just need to get it up on her site.

I unloaded the box of goodies and immediately realized it wasn't there. I hoped it was in good hands. I can approach her about putting her "catalog" on line, but I don't know how she'll respond. It's her baby and she likes being in control of all facets, which is her right. We'll see how she feels about it. I like the idea, though. I know her availability fluctuates widely, which is understandable. How do you deal with expecting to sell a dozen of something every six months so you produce with that expectation. Then, the phone rings and the caller takes ALL twelve?! Kim

What you DO, is you start with a disclaimer to the effect that these are the roses you are propagating with some regularity, but that supply of specific cultivars is subject to demand.

If I can get her basic list, I can work on a catalog, and PRESENT it to her. We'll go from there. Burling makes great plants, and has the will to provide (if in small quantities) things that are unavailable elsewhere. If she offers Benny Lopez, or Old Town Novato, or Roseville Noisette ... she is not in competition with other nurseries, but she does a great service to us all.

I loved the descriptions, as fun as J. Petermans but lots more facts. Just a quick question- was expected bush size left out for a reason? I'd never complain, I'm just nosy and love to know the reasons for things.
Also- I want a Mrs. Dudley Cross so much my hands itch. (or the might be itching from the yardwork over the weekend, can never be sure.)

Well, since those buying can see the plant in site, that's less-valuable.

Beyond that, tho, NewGirl, I have trouble myself with sizes. Someone tells me a rose grows to 4-ft., but it's 8-ft. in MY garden ... what do I write? OR, I grow Grandmother's Hat clones that vary in size from 4 ft. to 8 ft. What do I write???

I don't prune. My roses are taller than the same roses in other gardens. It could make you crazy!

Your point is well-taken, tho. I want to take all of this material and expand upon it, in a different context. Perhaps, there, I can address size.

NewGirl... I always have the same question about sizes, but then I ask here and in many cases there is rarely consensus because each region and microclimate grows so differently. I don't know where in NorCal you are... but have you been to Vintage Gardens in Sebastopol? They are having an open garden on May 11, 12 and 13. It's a great way to see what some of these roses look like in real life.

Kristimama- I was in Sebastapol on Easter and I was wracking my brain trying to remember when the open garden was- thanks for the reminder!

Jeri- You're right that with the difference in soil types just in the city of Sacramento and surrounding environment (former brickwork? tailings? former dairy farm?) means there isn't much consistency beyond a basic "Will the summer heat kill it? How about the blackspot?" questions.

I just found out you have a rose named after you! It's beautiful!
