Be sure they actually have the roses you want before you start counting on them. Hortico has a rather spotty record. Some have great luck and others dont but they frequently dont actually have the listed roses-it can take literally years to get your whole order. For me that turned out to be rather expensive as I got charged full shipping on every shipment. It has been a while since I took the plunge. YMMV...

Thanks for that. I didn't know anything about them. I'll either go there and see for myself or forget ordering from them. I can't wait years to fulfill an order.

There's no point in buying from them even if I manage to get there if I can't get back across the border with whatever I might purchase or if for some patent or other obscure reasons, it isn't legal.

I'm really curious if their Harison, if they actually have it, is a repeat bloomer as claimed. That is what impels me now; I'm sure I can get most what they offer from a stateside grower, just would love to have a Harison's repeat bloomer that would climb as well. Whether they climb or not, Harison's does not seem to have cane dieback, the one I'm familiar with just keeps going like the Energizer bunny, with no special care except mulching. I also notice that it seemed unfazed by the deep freeze, although at bloom time, I'll see if it was affected in that respect. The leaves were fine.

Pickering shipped me in one batch every single rose I ordered, no problem with customs with them. I recognized some of the same names at Hortico that Pickering offers.

Obviously Hortico isn't interested in maintaining the paperwork framework necessary to export roses here. Just as obviously it is possible for a business to do that if it wants to.

I don't for sure whether you would be able to do that yourself or not. This website might help a little. US Customs may care about the patent if there is one, but I doubt it, not for personal use. There might be a duty to pay, but that's not going to be a major concern either for a few roses.

The quarantine issues are likely to be the biggest hangup. If you're willing and you do it the right way, they can sometimes be navigated, especially with a Canadian product. It will probably have to arrive at the border bare root. The USDA takes an extremely restrictive approach to bringing in soil from outside the country, even potting soil. It may have to be examined at an inspection station. I'm not certain about that. If so you would probably have to arrange for it to travel to someplace like Seattle, or JFK. That's more likely to happen with a European rose than it is with a Canadian one. I don't know for sure what would happen with a Canadian rose.

An extension agent might be able to point you in the right direction, perhaps.

There also may be rules from the Ag. Canada side, but I don't know what they would be, or even if there are any.

When I placed my order early march ,I was told they had everything in stock.
When it was shipped after emailing the owner, I was not shipped 4 because they were out of stock??????
I asked for different roses and got them but its not worth the troble.

york rose, those are all well worth thinking about, thanks for the info and link, would hate to get to the border and have them confiscated. Could happen. It might just be the Harison patent because others did get orders from them, albeit shorted, but maybe they live in Canada, can't tell from their zones. Maybe I'd better give up the idea, can wait and see if they email me back to shed further light on it. Pickering does ship bare root, that could be the main reason for that, although it cuts down shipping charges, too. My box didn't look like it had been opened by customs, but I didn't look at it that closely, my daughter unpacked it for me while I was bleaching (rinsed well, I found it in somebody's trash so it wasn't pristine) and filling the bucket :-). Without going back right now, I think I remember for sure a patent. I am the kind of person who likes to find ways around things but not to the point that I would knowingly be breaking any laws.

Stan, you can fool me 5 or 6 times for a Harison that repeats, climbs and grows . . .I am totally hung up on that prickly thing.

part, maybe they mean 'can be grown as a climber' if you
feel like training it.
It is one of the first to bloom. I am wondering if maybe in
very mild climates it could put out a few blooms after the

altorama, you are probably right; I'm a little suspicious about that unless they've developed a newer one which I doubt. I don't want to prune it unless I want more of a shrub, some if let go their own way are almost treelike. Otherwise, I want it to grow like it wants.

I looked at that again, and it had a whole list of things, so maybe it is available to US customers. I'll sit on it for awhile and wait to see if they write me back. I think the top explanation on their list is what applies if you click on the repeat link, it just explains what repeat means, a little confusing, but I think I may be right about that. You can add it to your cart, but at checkout if they find out you live in the wrong place, they would let you know because I'm sure they can't/won't/don't ship all over the world.

I'm not ready for a new order yet anyway, but it doesn't hurt to get some input and plans. It might be disappointing as a climber, but I know I can count on its hardiness. I don't want a climber with a long, prickly stem; that would be unsightly which is one big negative about that rose.

There are some other really nice roses there, too, but surely I can find another source or some other kind of rose from somewhere else.

You're welcome! If it matters enough to you (& it well may not in this case), these are the kinds of issues you will have to consider if you want to grow the plant in your yard and there is no USA supplier of the same rose (or other plant, for that matter).

I think I had better be realistic and not set myself up for the hassle. There are other roses and vendors, plenty. Getting a particular one is only the beginning. I'll have my hands full as it is. It's not as if I'm going to have a park here :-).

I noticed some canes don't look so good on my roses planted last week, so will start a new thread on that.

At one point a rose society in upstate NY used to send someone to Hortico, pick up roses with certification and bring them back over the border. But you'd have to be sure that Hortico provides the paperwork before going up there to get the roses at the nursery.
Percy Wright did a lot of work hybridizing Harison's Yellow with other things and had such varieties as as Harison's White,Harison's Blush and so on - but they were all once bloomers and no great improvement on the original.

I was hoping to go near there sometime this season, so if I make it there, I will know more what to expect and be sure to get the necessary paperwork.
