Which rose needs most structural support? Stingiest blooms?

A space opened up next to a wood post (planted what I thought was rescued cl lady hillingdon from the dog's favorite place to sit, turns out cl L gone and I rescued a barberry bush) I can move compassion, cl peace, cl first prize or cl oklahoma there. which of these needs the most support or which can be free standing? Does one need more sun? Which one has the most blooms?

As a general rule of thumb climbing forms of HTs are fairly stiff upright growers and are known to be rather stingy bloomers. You'd get a better show if you find a rose that was bred to be a climber and not just a tall sport of a rose meant to be something else.

My experience with Cl. Peace proves the rule. It is a very stiff and upright grower to about 8 or 10 feet. You can not manipulate those canes to save your life. They don't bend. But the other problem with Peace is you either get a great one that blooms a lot or a dud that never blooms. And you won't know what you've got for several years. I got a huge dud and ripped it out after 6 years with only one bloom to show for it. My friend's blooms it's head off all season.

Thanks Kate--I guess I've been very much on the fence about whether they'll tolerate the cold here, will just have to see I think. The flowers look so gorgeous I think I have to try anyway, so I was going to put in 4-5 and see. I'm essentially zone 6 in the backyard, so maybe I'll have success with them if you have. Do you winter protect? My neighbor did lose some HTs from year to year but he planted the bud union above ground and didn't winter protect. My Austins always seem significantly hardier and I was hoping these, although marketed as HTs, were more mixed lineage and would be hardier too. The beds are a bit elevated, which hurts cold-tolerance but helps keep things well-drained. But I can bury the bud unions and throw on some bark mulch or leaves in the fall, which may help. Okay, Peter is officially on the list, and I think I MUST have Liv and Yves Piaget--the flowers look too wonderful to pass up. Every weekend the ground stays workable I keep fixing up the beds to accommodate more roses...so now I have room for another order from Roses Unlimited!

For me Grandmother's Hat is a nice rose but not one of my most frequent bloomers. She only blooms in small flushes and no more than others of my HPs. HPs in general do well here as do Bourbons. Mme Pierre Oger is a monster (from Vintage who obtained a virus cleaned clone so maybe that accounts for some of the robustness???) Bourbon, healthy as can be and blooms repeatedly. Souvenir de la Malmaison is more demure in size but also a very healthy Bourbon with very good repeat. I can't remember whether she has many thorns. However, my HP Reine des Violettes is thornless and repeats about as much as Grandmother's Hat. Another HP I have is Comtesse O'Gorman, she is quite healthy and has few thorns. GH, RdV, and COG all seem to have very flexible canes, not twiggy/stiff like what I think of as HT habit. The HP that has bloomed the most for me is Baronne Prevost. She has also never shown any disease and has flexible canes. I have an HP from Eurodesert that came misidentified as Symphony but Cliff said it clearly wasn't. It's very pretty and healthy but quite strange. Grows in a very narrow, elegant, upright shape. I don't have a single rose that has that particular growth habit. Some canes are bristley while others are entirely smooth. I wonder how many of the found roses aren't any particular historic rose but rather seedlings of them. We know that in France back in the old days if you ordered a rose with a certain name you just might get a seedling. So what do we know about very old American nurseries? What were their practices? Did they always sell the actual variety or were seedlings sent? I really don't know but am curious about it. In addition, it seems modern day roses can easily get mixed up in commerce, so I have to wonder how many times that happened in the past, and we just don't know about it. Or if someone, way back got a seedling and that rose did really, really well, it might have been passed on to friends and spread because it was such a good plant. It won't match precisely a famous antique variety because it isn't. But should be treasured because of garden merit. With roses at Sangerhausen, I wish someone or a group would visit and discuss, in depth, the ID's of roses such as Cornet and Mrs. R. Sharman-Crawford with staff. How certain is Sangerhausen that these roses are correct in their garden? Do they have documentation that helps in the ID, and can this be viewed? Were these plants growing in parts of the garden that were bombed to heck during war, or in areas that came through unscathed? Then it would be nice if DNA of GH, Cornet, and MSC could be compared to see if they are related or are any of them identical.

Here I am again after coming in a few minutes ago. We could have worse vices, yes. I didn't realize the Dowdeswell Delphs were the NZ types. My good gardening friend, and far more experienced than I at growing perennials, grows these. I saw them a couple of weeks ago at her garden, and I've never seen such lovely delphs. I can't get her to take photos, so I can't share any pics, darn. I would be interested in the shorter ones you mentioned because of our awful wind. I expect to stake anything like that out here, but it gets to you after a while. If you hear anything more about the shorter ones, please let us know. As a cheap substitute for tall flowers like foxglove and delphiniums, I use double hollyhocks. They are quite lovely in all sorts of pastels, reseeding readily. I also gather seed and throw it out starting in late autumn. They are in all stages of growth and blooming, which means when half of them are blown down, there are more coming along. I never tie them up, and of course, they are the type of plant that really breaks good when they blow down. There's no saving them then. Jim, those marigolds are really stunning. I think I'll try them next year. I didn't realize that they were slug food in some areas. Definitely not here, though. I grow a lot of calendula or pot marigold, not a true marigold like you grow, more by accident than anything. They look good for about three weeks max, then go to seed. and do they produce seed. I really don't like them very well, and they are the darn blister beetles' favorite food. I like your train track scene, very green and beckoning--makes me want to walk along the tracks in that cool green grass. Well, back to viewing the hired goats eat brush out back. While watching several videos on youtube of the beautiful David Austin display gardens, it was brought home to me how effective darker roses such as Princess Anne and James Galway were in breaking up expanses of the softer whites, yellows and pale pinks. Another device that made an impact is how the different sizes of the blooms were very effective in giving interest and movement in areas in which there were almost no companion plants. From tiny to quite large, each rose bloom played a part in a veritable symphony of colors and patterns, and that is something we could readily transfer to our own gardens. In my garden of a very few seven roses there is yet one with very small and delicate blooms, Darlow's Enigma (white), slightly larger blooms of Purple Skyliner, the very large blooms of Grandmother's Hat, deep pink and Dixieland Linda, pinkish apricot, and the slightly smaller blooms of Wild Edric, deep pink, Cl. Caroline Testout, lighter pink and Ginger Syllabub, golden apricot. Not so bad for such a small assortment!

I grow 'Compassion' as a free standing shrub and keep it pruned to about 6' x 6' - The stiff canes make it easy to train as a shrub. It is in as much sun as I have, but I suspect that is not the same as full sun where you are. I read it is shade tolerant, but don't know that from personal experience. I like it and am happy with the amount of bloom it has. Mine is into its 4th year. Gean

Gean, you're doing the same thing as I am with Cl. Lady Hillingdon. It's an experiment and since it's young it's less than 5 feet tall. I keep disbudding it to encourage it to grow, and time will tell whether this will work, since it's more limber than a HT. It is against a wall like yours so I can always tie in some of the canes if necessary. Sorry, vettin, for getting a bit off-topic.

Compassion still has stakes from last spring when it rained non stop and then winds blew it sideways. I straightened it out and tied it to that stake. Over the summer the canes really straightened and strengthened up so I am going to take the stake out and untie it. Compassion doesn't seem to mind the pruning at all so far either.

I read on another thread that if you don't tie a climber to a support that the bottom canes will strengthen, which seems to me to mean that a lot of climbers can be grown as shrubs. I hope that's true.

Ingrid, I saw a large LH at the cemetery; it was so beautiful, I can see why you love that rose so much. It is the first really large one I've ever seen. Good luck with your shrub experiment ... I think it is a great way to grow a climber. Hope that didn't sidetrack your thread, Vettin! Gean

My Peace Cl was one I rescued from Lowes. I guess it's going on it's third year now and it is ready to pop. Contrary to Seil's experience mine was flexible enough that I twisted it.

There will likely be hell to pay come pruning time but I'm going to train her up onto the house.
Mine gave an amazing early flush last year but after that...nothing. This year I will fertilize after first flush and maybe trim the laterals a bit.
It was gorgeous and the scent was really nice.
