Expert of Compost Tea! Need your advice!

Hi,

I want to grow some simple grass type plant.(wheat grass, rye grass, oat grass)And would like to using manure tea to be the main fertiliser. I have basic knowledge of composting, or NPK value needed to do composting.

I have pet Chinchillas(rodent), and their vegetarian,their poo is tiny small odorless FRESH pellet poo. I am wondering can i do something QUICK to get a simple MANURE TEA with NO NEED to spending a cent to buy composted manure from the store.

What I was planning to do is:

Collect the solid FRESH poo(200gram-+), put in a 5 gallon bucket, fill with water(half gallon), stir every day TWICE , morning and night for 3-4days. Then filter it if neccesary, dilute the tea to water my plant.

Will it work? I just afraid it may due to this tea is not create fro ma composted manure, once I water it the organism will begin to process of composting by using the nitrogen of my soil and it cause problem to my grass which need high nitrogen...

I fear you may be headed for danger, weew. Your plan is to make manure tea, which will probably include numerous strains of bacteria you don't want to be around, including salmonella and e coli.

Is there some reason you don't want to compost your pellets? The composting process will neutralize the bacteria and produce a beautiful fertilizer for your pet grasses.

As for the lawn, I would simply collect the dry pellets in a container and scatter them right on the turf before rain is expected later in the spring, when temperatures are warm enough to promote rapid decomposition.

thanks for your info. The reason I am not doing composting is because I using tumber/drum composter,and i done have lawn to create that much of grass to heat up the pile...
About the bacteria, I was not thinking to feed it fresh, is mean to sun dried to make it become hay-wheat HAY! :D Second thought is, will it be save to bury it in a pot cover with soil and let it sit for 1-2 weeks with daily moisture control?
I am not in the State, my country is WARM ALWAYS 26-33C each day, i think it is warm enough to speed up the decomposition right?(I mean in the pot with soil)

Doris has a great question. It might be possible to get some seeds with his name or variants of his name as well. Can't go wrong with some cosmos, especially some yellow and orange ones, closer to the taste of a boy. Also, make some holes on the SIDES of your styrofoam cups near the bottom. Holes on only the bottom prevent the water from draining out and allow the roots no aeration at all. That can kill plants. They need air as much as they need water. Nice post. I wanted to point out however that bacterial brews actually only need 24 hrs or less and fungal brews need around 48 hrs. Also if you are using a bag for your casting/compost adding a stone inside the bag will help dislodge fungal spores. A quick note on worm bins. in general if you exclude animal byproduct you will have much higher microbial diversity and much higher number of biodegraders in your castings. Also by adding small amounts of compost and minerals such as greensand and/or rock dust you can help further feed and breed your microbial community. Also there are quite a few ingredients you can add to your teas to enhance them. Some enhance the microbial content by adding food, others enhance the micro-nutrients in your tea, while will do both. The teas that we create have at the very least all of these ingredients. Worm Castings, Alaskan Forest Humus, Organic Compost, Hydrolyzed Fish, Sea 90, Micronized Kelp, Micronized Humic Acid, Demerara Sugar, Azomite, Alfalfa Meal, Kelp Meal, Humates, Fish Bone Meal, Fish Meal, Feather Meal, Soybean Meal, Cameline Meal, Fossilized Kelp, Rock Phosphate, Langbenite, Volcanic Ash, Green Sand, Sulfate of Potash. While I'm not suggesting you need all of these ingredient I am suggesting that you experiment. Have some fun, keep notes, and learn.

Actually, down at my old place (4 miles down the road) and most certainly in the country, I considered the deer pressure light. I avoided tempting them--no rhodies/azaleas, yews, tulips, hostas, etc--and I did choose resistant plants, spraying only for a couple of daylillies, and I had a deer fence around the veggie garden. Actually, my most difficult varmint was a groundhog that showed up every year in late summer to burrow under the fence and get into the many fall greens I had. Never was able to lure one into a box trap. Obviously, it couldn't have been the same critter for so many years, but they were always too smart for me. Here in the tiny town I'm now in, 2 streets, maybe 20 houses and surrounded by fields, woods and streams, pressure is still light. But I'll need to fence my veggie garden. And no tempting ornamentals. I should add, the county in which I live is VERY rural. In fact it's the only county east of the Mississippi without a stoplight. Or so I've been told. And it's the home of the smallest covered bridge in the state.

My thoughts on your post is that typically the grasses you are trying to grow don't need much fertilizer.

I would probably scatter the pellets rather than making tea.

You must have many, many pets to think that you have enough dung to do the job. Or else your lawn must be the size of a postage stamp. This would be an exercise in failure IMO.

I have mountain of green waiting for me to compost, it just i need to collect bag by bag near by.

rootdoctor, you think that I would only use the pet DUNG for compost? I think you didnt read my 1st post clearly. I have said I knew about the way of composting and the usage on C AND N. It just i have not try using fresh tiny small poo to make a tea, thats all. That didnt show is a FAILURE!

I personally think it would be easier/better to use the small pet poo directly on/in the soil as fertilizer rather than trying to make tea with it. The point of making compost tea is generally to promot microbe growth to repopulate a microbally poor soil. Uncomposted manure isn't necessarily a good source of microbes for such a purpose.
