Bringing Madame Lambard out of the Doldrums

She hasn't had a good start, being replanted a month or two after being planted as a band. She was then partially eaten by rodents two or three times until I erected a thorny barrier around her. She's received copious waterings, heavy mulch and alfalfa meal and is now covered with leaves, but the whole thing is a miniature or bonsai, not much over a foot tall with tiny leaves and no blooms. Does anyone have advice about how I can bring this plant to its normal size? It's been in this state of suspended animation for many weeks now and I'm really puzzled. Marie Daly and Belinda's Dream who are next to her are doing fine. The location is sunny and open, so that's not an issue. I garden organically, by the way.

Ingrid, I don't know what to tell you about the Madame, but I know your frustration. I had the same problem with Eugene de Beauharnais (or however the heck you spell it). He just kept getting smaller and smaller. I repotted him and babied him, but he eventually just wasted away.

Ingrid, perhaps just get another one if you can. I have it here, and had to move one in December - a huge thorny monster of a rose. It's going to take a season for it to rebound, I think but it made the transplant. Maybe try to get one from ARE - they send out big plants.

Ingrid, I've planted another Anna Olivier (removed 3 that had canker badly, and were planted far too close together), Etoile de Lyon and WR Smith (bought as Amelia Anderson, but I think they're the same). They are next to each other, and then there are 2 mature Marie van Houtte (I had to move one which was too big for it's spot, so they've ended up together) next to them, and then the unkillable Mrs Dudley Cross. So they're all pale, and with the exception of AO, pale pink and/or yellow. Also in the circle, but in it's own small bed is Mme Berkeley, which is already topping 4', and about to have it's second flush. I'm so hoping I like it better. I'm like you - this is my third chance at this circle, but I'm not happy! I would love to have Rosette Delizy - I love the rose and it would be a great contrast, but the blooms balled and burnt here. I'm almost tempted to try it again, as I see brightstar grows it in Sydney in fairly similar conditions to mine. But I did have it for 2 years, and it was around 6' tall by then, and there was rarely a good bloom on it. I've got a deep purple buddleia in there, and am planting some blackbird penstemon, a blue lupin and an aster, so they'll give some contrast. Also there, are some perennial wallflower and a phlomis. Right now, I'm edging the whole circle in box, which is a lovely fresh green. On the cards for next year, if I'm still not happy are Mme Antoine Mari (she was on the list for this year, but I changed my mind!), and perhaps Triomphe de Luxembourg. Recently I went to the nursery I order online from. It's about 10 hours drive from here, so that was my first and probably last visit. They'd had heavy rain (which we get from time to time here), and it was interesting to see which roses had stood up to it. T de L had stood up well. Another rose I'd never heard off - Purpurea di Bologna - was in full flush, with not a spoilt bloom. It was a glorious rich purple (though HMF describe it as mauve). I'd love to find a spot for it! kittymoonbeam, that's curious about that study - it's goes against everything I've heard. I'd love to know more.

I am so sorry, but I didn't see your wonderful, so very kind posts until now, Anne, Carol, Sheila and Sara-Ann. I thought the thread was over, but I'm so glad I thought to check it once more today. Your support and praise mean more to me than you'll ever know. This garden belongs not just to me but to all of you who have given me the will to go on and not give up during some not so good times. I know many of you struggle with your own issues, whatever they may be. Anne, it hurts me to think of you out there in the cold with your hands freezing, trying to put everything to rights for the time when you have your own spring. I hope it will be a wonderful one for you; you deserve it. I used to think that Miss Atwood and Mme. Jules Gravereux were different roses, but now I'm not so sure. Since that time this rose has matured a bit more, and there seem to be more petals, and there may be a possibility they are one and the same. Carol, I know you've gone through a very difficult period of your own, and believe me when I say I missed you and often wondered why you weren't with us. I'm very anxious to see your new garden, which I know will be exquisite given your talent and educated eye. I don't feel I deserve half the praise you heap on me because I've been inspired so much by what other people have done. If there's an original idea here it must be accidental. I do love nature and the wilderness, and I've tried to respect it when creating my garden, although the garden itself is by no means natural. There are no beautiful wild roses or early hybrids because I simply don't have the space, and I'm greedy about having blooms for as long as possible. I wish my garden looked like Nik's or Daisy's in Crete or Christopher's or many others I've seen here, but nature here in the last few years has brought me to my knees. Given what we're facing here, no one knows what will happen. I'm living for the now and the hope of a vital, rose-filled spring.

The botanic garden did test the water. I think they are more up on this topic than I am ever likely to be. We use the same water, and I am within walking distance. I know not to use this fertilizer again in my conditions. Next year, it is back to diluted fish emulsion, or nothing, as usual. And we will see how the roses look. Sorry, no place for olive trees (and I don't want the mess), and grapevines are out because I have dogs (grapes are toxic to dogs, depending on the dog as to how much). But I did plant alfalfa within the last several years to see how it would do (fields growing alfalfa frequently supplement with boron). The alfalfa grows well here with zero supplementation. The wild creatures eat it like crazy however.

Ingrid and Sheila, I’m just reveling in the beauty of your garden photos. Both of you have a knack for growing roses to compliment the glorious scenery around you, instead of trying to compete with it. You two grow your roses to look like part of the natural/native flora around you, not an easy task. Of course, you need the right property to begin to even try. Both of you have wonderful properties, and have managed to accomplish this look to perfection. Your roses and other plants look like they belong there, instead of looking like they were so carefully planned and placed in their spots (even though I know they must be). Or even worse, placed Willy-nilly wherever they can be squeezed in. I’m guilty of the latter, but space is at a premium here. Ingrid, I had forgotten about your ‘Sweet Frances”. What a darling rose it’s growing up to be! I now remember your purchasing it from ARE. I do indeed see the bunny, “mooning” us with his cotton ball tail. ‘Eyes For You’, I have zero recollection of you adding, although I’m sure you must have mentioned it. I saw one somewhere, and found it SO very striking. It’s one that really calls to me, even though it’s not the type of bloom that I’m typically attracted to. The blooms remind me of some tree peony blooms. My fingers itch to get my hands on a bundle of ‘Eyes For You’ blooms to combine with a dark purple flower in an arrangement. It’s a unique, and beautiful rose. Sheila, what a wonderful treat! You grow so many gorgeous roses. JH #3 looks quite happy. Do you think he's matured enough to be out of danger, barring some unexpected disaster? I hope so, as Jeri has shown that he's such spectacular rose. Your ‘La France’ has grown so much, gorgeous! I’m impressed with them all, but Mutabilis, Hermosa, and Glorie de Dijon are the “standouts” for me today. I’m delighted to see so many blooms on Glorie de Dijon! Ingris, I've had a similar problem with Niles Cochet - except for the rodents. He is in his 3rd location. He was a really slow starter (non-starter) in his first location. I posted here about him back then, and some said he tends to be that way - slow. Moved him when I realized he was going to be a mammoth bush, but when he finally seemed to be settling in and growing, I realized his new spot was going to be way too shady for a tea, so last spring off he went to home #3. Over the last 10 months or so he has added no canes and the three that he has have had very few leaves and have gotten shorter due to dieback. I'm really tired of looking at a stunted and shrinking Niles Cochet. I've never seen a flower on him in almost 2 years. The love affair is over. NC will be out of here. I have a few choices for his replacement that I'll have to ponder.

Or just wait and cross your fingers you can get her through the heat of summer. She may be growing roots. Too much TLC can kill just as fast as neglect.

Sherry, get another Niles and give him room and prime real estate. He's really a great rose.

Jerome, I know he's a great rose. That's what is sad about it. OK, I'll give him more time. It's just that I think he should have done some growing in the last month like all the others.

Either Madame Lambard has been spying on me or she's psychic. I went out a little while ago to look at the garden and was thrilled to see that seemingly overnight she's sprouted some new leaves and even a tiny bud. I think we scared her into growing with this thread!

Ingrid, I've been watching this thread with interest. I have a Radiance that is a tiny 3 inch twig with no leaves. Rodents got it this winter. It's green but just sitting there. I haven't wanted to replace it--it was kind of hard to find this one. Maybe it will be psychic, too, and put out some leaves--even a few--now that the weather is warming up.

My Mme Lombard was planted 2 years ago and did NOTHING until this spring. She's still not very large but she is blooming and blooming. I was worried for a long time she would not make it. She seems to be one of those teas that (at least for me) take a long time to establish.

Now that she's blooming, I love the blooms.

In a previous garden I also had her and she began to bloom as soon as she hit the ground, even though she was not very large. I think the poor thing has been traumatized with being moved and then eaten several times, and I'm truly grateful that she now seems to be making a comeback (keeping fingers crossed).
