Clearance plants - savings thrill
Comments (51)Ello, ello, friendly neighborhood Resource Plus vendor here. Long story short, we're the people in charge of marking down plants at Lowes, and so here's how it works. (Located at the Orem, Utah location by the way.) It used to be that we could mark the 'distressed' plants down to whatever we wanted. Now, however, we have to follow the 1,3,5 rule. If $0-$4.99, it goes to $1. $5-$9.99 goes to $3, and $10-$14.99 goes to $5. Anything 15+ goes down by 50%. Now, if these don't sell fast enough, THEN we get to mark them down more, usually by about 50% off the current price each week. As for choosing which plants to mark down, it varies. I personally usually wait until the plants actually need some TLC to look good. My manager wants them marked if dying. If dead, diseased, or bugged, we are required by law and company policy to dispose of them in the trash compactor. Stupid, I know, as I have seen many savable trees, bushes, and flowers (not to mention benches, cabinets, toilets, ect...) crushed. But we CANNOT give them away. Don't ask. That bit about Home Depot getting credit back? It's true. They expect their plants to die, and are little better than Walmart about watering. This is not just me supporting Lowe's (as being seasonal does not bring loyalty), but from actual experience as a gardener. I don't like HD plants, never will. The success rate has just been too low. Walmart is fine if you catch them before they die of drought. (And yes, we will make deals on mass buys of clearance. We want them gone.) If you have any other questions about the program, let me know. I'll gladly help. And if you are near the Orem, Utah Lowes, pop in and say hi to the vendor. Comments (6)Looks like a gorgeous female to me, Angie, at least her antennae look smallish. Female luna moths have bigger antennae than other big moth females, at least mine always have. I've mistakenly called a female a male until the "real" male emerged with his great big antennae! :) Around here their favorite host is sweetgum, but they use many trees - she probably laid eggs on your hickory last night. Congrats on finding my favorite moth! Sherry...See MoreThrill Is Gone, Baby !
Comments (40)We're done in Montreal. I have to admit ii did reach a point of not wanting to eat another tomato, but after canning all of mine, I actually went to the market to buy more for sauce! I got bitten by the canning bug. I've ordered seeds for next year and will continue to scour the catalogs. Picked the last of the cucumbers last week.. Now it's time to dream about next years crop! It's true, soon we will be wishing for our fresh tomatoes instead of the supermarket bland ones! Wish I had a greenhouse....See MoreSO thrilled with Hosta purchase from 'old-cartoon-comics' on eBay
Comments (14)Thank-you all for the warm welcome! I love my little piece of Maine. lindalana, those pink plants are old azaleas that don't get the light they would like to have, so are very sprawling. I trimmed the left one up when I did some cleaning in the bed Wednesday PM in preparation for planting day yesterday. The one on the right is gone, but I do have an old Bleeding Heart that peeks through. This is that bed this AM in the rain - The 'multi-unit' birdhouse is temporarily on top of the granite birdbath. The white stones that are sitting on the stone wall for now are pieces of white and rose quartz from a mine in Albany, Maine, where we had a camp when I was growing up. They'd been buried back in the bed, and I'll decide what to do with them. I re-edged the sod in front that bed to give me a border to plant some of the hosta, so I could get them in the ground for now. I planted the JMs approx. 10 years ago, and they have FLOURISHED! I have more at various spots in the yard and they all do well here. This pic was taken this AM of a front border, and you see the JMs there left of center. There is a hidden pathway to the left of the JMs, and granite steps that go down to my 'puppy pen' in a lower part of the yard. I have always had Brittanys, and the current three are rescues, and any future ones will be. They have doggie doors to get into their 60 x 80 part of the yard, which is hidden behind 6 ft cedar fence. To show how well the JMs do, this was 7/16/16, when I was planting hosta in the shed garden. The JM on the right has grown so much that you cannot see any of those hosta, unless you crawl in under the JM now.I had a week's vacation at that time, and it was SO hot that this was my setup -...See Moreozmelodye
