Name That Plant!

mystery tree /plant; leaves, bloom & seed pod

This single stem plant appeared in the south-facing bed along the front of our home. At first I thought leaves resembled tulip poplar, but the white simple flower and the fringed clasping seed pod are completely foreign to me. It reached about 2' this summer, but I didnt notice it until maybe August. We're near woods and old farms and have also planted over 200 trees, shrubs, and perennials in the 2 years we've been on these ten acres, so a seed could've come from anywhere.

The flower is white, maybe 1" wide,and has 5 petals that twirl open. Also the stem and branches have a reddish hue. I have another photo of the flower but I'm a first-timer here and dont see "upload photo" on follow-up posts. Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you! It has been driving me crazy. The people who own the land said they have never seen them bloom and had no idea what they were, apparently you need to cut the pods off! I wonder if it is too late now, I had no idea! D: Edit: Thank you for the link! I like the four we have, but don't want a forest! Thank you for identifying my mystery seed pods. I will definately not sow any. The wisteria was so beautiful in he spring hanging over my driveway and along my side yard. Now there are wisteria vines absolutely everywhere. It's like a full time job keeping them pulled away from my house. Seems like in no time after cleaning them off my house they are vining up to my windows and into the gutters. I will get rid of as many seed pods as I can.

Syn means synonymous. Often the naming of plants is difficult to keep track of: both naming priority based on who names the plant first, as well as taxonomic changes when a genus is lumped or divided can influence the name and result in synonymy. Other factors also, but it's my understanding that these are common reasons.

Hi Gigi!! i am really excited to see what blooms these little guys produce!! They say it takes a few years to see inflos, but I'll keep my fingers crossed!! Keep trying on the twirling!! I have been doing this on and off ( when I think about it). And have one Seedpod developing on my Jackie!! It's growing nicely and I might see another on a special variety.. But I don't want to jinx myself to say right now!! I'll let it get bigger before I let my breath out!! ;-) Here is Jackie that I hand pollinated.. And a picture of the Seedpod!! Dupefl.... I also think Gina has similar traits as J-105. Im Sure they have some of the same DNA since most of those varieties are from seedlings from Penang Peach over in Thailand.. But my thoughts were the same as yours. I believe they are closely related!! They are both beautiful with the dark coloration and the reflexed white border on the petals.. Have a great day!! Laura
