snowblower gets clogged

i bought a Toro 524 snow thrower second hand. i ran it for the first time, it threw snow for 20 feet and it clogged up, i cleared it and it would clog up immediately every time after i clear the snow out. is this a common problem with heavey snow or could there be something with the machine?

We have an Ariens 624 that almost never clogs up, to my surprise. I think its the paint in the chute. This unit is only one year old, and the paint is still slick and shiny. If your machine will throw snow 20 feet, it sounds to me like the impeller is working, & therefore I suspect that the chute itself might be causing the clogging.

that makes sense the paint is almost gone in the chute and a little rust is developing.

Hey there Brupal, your problem is your carburator, cleaning Tecumseh carbs can be somewhat tricky because of the way they are designed. I just repaired a snowblower the same type as yours with the same problem. To completely repair your carb I recommend taking the carb apart, soaking the main body of the carb in carb cleaner over night and then blow out all the holes, tubes, and jets with compressed air. Next dont reuse old parts, buy a rebuild kit which is normaly around $15 and can be ordered from any tecumseh dealer or www.sears.com/parts. Your rebuild kit will consist of all the mixture screws, gasgets, seals, and a float valve. One tricky thing is to replace the float valve seal, to do this I get a thin long screw, screw it into the old seal and pull it out. To install the new seal, insert it (groove side facing down), push it down with the head of a screw until is is flush in its place. One this you should note, it to shake the float to make sure fuel is not leaking into it. When you reinstall the valve, float and float pin, hold the carb upside down so that the float closes, the float should be level with the carb. If it is above or below level adjust the float tab to correct it. When installing the carb's bowl make sure the deeper side is facing the oposite of the fuel inlet port. Remember to adjust the mixture screws correctly starting with the low screw located on the body of the carb and then the high screw on the bowl nut. I hope this helps ^_^

We have an Ariens 624, I think it was made in 2007. The snow chute is steel, but the orange paint is very slick, so it does not clog, as a general rule. It might get clogged up in really wet snow.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you may be the victim of technology to which there is no easy solution. When a drain line is properly sized under full load the level of liquid in a horizontal section of the pipe should fill the pipe Â½ full. This allows a sufficient depth of liquid to suspend and convey any solids that might be present in the waste while still leaving the upper Â½ of the pipe open for the free transfer of vent air. Back in the day of the 3.5gpf toilets it was determined that all toilets must be connected to a 4" drain line. When they first introduced the 1.6gpf water saver toilets there was a great number of complaints with the same symptoms as you describe, and as a result the toilets got a bad rap, however it was soon determined that if the waste line was reduced from 4" to 3" the problem would be corrected. The codes now require that all toilets with a discharge greater than 1.6gpf must be connected to a 4" line while all toilets with a 1.6gpf or less may be installed on a 4" line during a retrofit but for new construction they must be connected to a 3" line. In a typical single family dwelling changing the line may be costly but it is not out of the question however in the case of a condo changing the line would be a major project.

Mastiff37, You might try using a fine mesh bag in the skimmer basket. If your impeller is closed you really need to remove the motor and impeller from the pump to clean. Open impellers will generally clear themselves. Suction cleaners are notorious for this type of problem because they direct ALL debris directly to the pump.

You could wait for a warm & sunny day, & set the blower out in the driveway, to warm up. Then you could coat the inside of the discharge chute with car wax and buff it out a bit. That might reduce clogging.

Reezmo: You may wish to visually check your Impeller (Turbine) Belt Adjustment. With Heavy Snow you Belt may be beginning to Slip. Also as Eric has advised any dirt , rust
accumulation within the Chute will definitely cause build up of snow even crystallized Cold Weather Snow . With Warmer Weather and wet snow even at the Best of times Clogging can become an issue if you take to big a bite. I usually run less than 3/4 chuteand run at low rate of Gear Speed in wet snow conditions. I agree with Eric if possible refinish the interior of the chute when weather permits , but I would check the Belt Tension 1st Bro ..Let us know how you make out..Ty :)

thanks i apreciate all advice, i did pretty much all that was suggested waxed all parts good and so far it works fine. thanks for all of your time.
