Does Milorganite really smell like POO?
Comments (22)Yes, very good tip Virginian! I finally was able to find some Milorganite at Home Depot. Yaayy!! I will now be able to give that a try. Hopefully it will spur some growth on my Basjoos. They are only about 8 inches and have probably only grown about 3 inches since I got them a couple months ago! They are still in pots, but everything is now ready for me to put them into their permanent home in the ground....See MoreWhat does wisteria smell like?
Comments (17)First, the answer to your question, "what does wisteria smell like?" To me there is nothing like the smell of wisteria. You have to stop and smell it. It's like a very sweet perfume that one could never get tired of. I am biased though, this smell brings me to a very fond memory as a child. My grandmother, who has passed away many years ago, grew a wisteria near her house. It was in the shape of a small tree. My favorite cousin and I had just finished hunting easter eggs and wanted to enjoy our prizes (the boiled eggs!). So we sat ourselves down underneath the gorgeously blooming wisteria, but little did we know that the bees loved it too. We ran away screaming because there were so many. Now as a professional horticulturalist I will not plant chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) because it is highly invasive. I am in zone 8 myself. At my school there was a Natural Resource Conservation department and they spoke of the problems this plant caused to the natural areas. It is irresponsible to plant it if you know the damage it causes. There are alternatives though. The two most popular are Summer Wisteria (Milletia reticulata) and Amethyst Falls Wisteria (Wister frutescens). The summer wisteria is very very stinky. I was waiting on a customer one day at a nursery I worked for and one was near in full bloom. I thought it was the customer's breath! I felt so bad when I realized the smell was still in that area later. The Amethyst Falls, which is in the same genus has a similar fragrance, but somewhat different bloom, but still very beautiful (I will be planting this one myself). The gardens at the campus I went to grows it. I hope this helps. The wisteria at my grandmother's, even though my grandfather passed a few years ago and the land has been sold, it is still there and blooms every year....See MoreCimicifuga racemosa, Cimicifuga ramosa, Actaea racemosa question
Comments (4)Wow, this is an 11 year old thread, and now in 2021, I still find it difficult to track down clear description and photos of the various American Mountain Bugbane. I too in the north-east have seen similar to the poster's description in a small handfull of local garden landscapes. What baffles me is no mention of ‣ the intensely enchanting sweet vanilla pefume that wafts on the wind from this wonderful bottle-brush-like cluster of flowers! BTW that enticing smell, along with the shape, is why I first thought the nik-name "fairy candles" was attributed-- but my rough research seems to state that nik-name is for it's stinkier cousin black cohash..? Well, I prefer to call the sweeter bugbane "fairy candles" as well, and so I will. Now to find out if this magical late season blooming delight can be found at a local plant nursery. If it is rare, could be tough. Or if that fails, perhaps I'll be bold and knock on the door of someone in town who has it in their garden to ask either where they got or if willing to sell cuttings..?...See MoreALFALFA TEA: What does it smell like?
Comments (21)Sadly. Mine actually smelled like number 2, number 2. I put the stuff down yesterday and brewed up another batch for the rest. I have that matted/crust issue in my garden ever since the barrel tipped over. @kublakan: LOL Thanks for your blunt response. Hilarious!...See More- 12 years ago
