Introducing .... Robert's Seedling.

In February, I did a presentation for the Richmond Rose Society about growing roses from seed. At the time I agreed to do this, I didn't have any of my own seedlings to show. Robert generously offered to lend me some of his.

Here is a flower on an OP seedling from Leontine Gervais. (Rosa wichuriana X Souvenir de Catherine Guillot) I have been watching this bud for at least two weeks now. It has been slow to reveal itself, but well worth the wait.

We wondered, based on the parentage of LG, whether she might produce any repeat-blooming babies. (According to Mendel, it could happen.) This plant itself isn't all that vigorous -- I figure it may have put on more growth if it hadn't had to ripen this flower ... not that I would have snipped it off, you understand.

I thought I'd share.

What a beautiful bloom! I'll bet a similar flower was used as one of the parents of Flamenco Queen. Do you have any seeds you'd be willing to part with? I don't have any seedlings for trade, but I do have some fresh seeds.

Thank you Kathy! That spirea is planted so close to the house it really has to arch out, I'm sure it would easily be 5' across if it really had the room to grow. but it seems happy there and I love the back drop it provides in that corners so I don't think I'll move it. and with the 5 maple trees on the property I definitely don't ahve a shortage of leaves! :) Thank you Kathi! Unfortunately I don't know the hardiness of the spirea, all I know is just about eveyone in my area has it. Good luck finding out! Thank you Prairie Girl! Yup that's blue ice amsonia - I love it!! I got that from a co-worker. I'm glad your iris finally bloomed!! I don't know if I could've waited for 10 years, lol! Hi Rick, thanks for the suggestion! I have some plumbago out front that I have to move because for so reason I thought it was good for dense shade but it's not doing anything for me at all. I think moving it under that tree is a great idea, thanks! Thank you Judy! I agree, it helps me so much to see the "big picture" and how the plants co-habitate more then a close up of 2 or 3 companion plants. You all have been so helpful and nice, I'm so happy to be here, thank you so much! I'm off to rescue some more plants from my co-worker. It'll certainly save me another trip to the nursery :)

hi you should not apoligize that was not long. and yes if you have not done it before it would be an experiment at least to you . I have a 1/2 acre lot that I wished I would have used some of the things you allready have suggested my goal was to elimate ALL lawn and i.ve done a lot but a big job with a bad back and a job lol. I also agree with you,re thoughts on the invasive plants I have found a home for "veronica flowers" and garlic chives based on the fact they choked all others out. those veronicas were a hassle in my front flower beds but an area in the back that is a load of junk/brush/boards covered with dirt just love it and choked all others out and requires no water. I think you would have a use for mint plants also ,yrs back we established a bed next to my gmas house where nothing had ever grown an area about 20by60ft I used plants from neighbors in the corners and centers of squares in a grid about 3yrs and this is solid mint and gets mowed occasionally. while i,m no pro but well read coneflowers always seem to pop up in discussions like this no matter what part of the country it is. and that seed is available in lbs. sunflowers are my first choice and this yr. i,m planting two bags of bird seed in stripes in my yard . I have a lg amount of seeds of various stuff if you are interested??? landscapers and supposed experts have been using ivys for centuries I have a a variegated yellow one that I wished was all over the yard and plan to let it eat a long stretch of chain link and still dream of making a solid steel tee pee and letting ivy eat it. if you do not get a lot of response it is not you,re fault just the amount of forum users. I can go on and on but you seem like a good candidate for a lot of mulch you should seriously put the word out that folks can deliver stuff and get all the grass and woodchips you can. you spoke of paper that is a lot of paper but I can say from experience cardboard is easier to get and easier to haul I was a warehouse worker for yrs and can tell you where there will be huge amounts of it in any place in nation. see that was,nt long lol. when it gets to blooming I,ll show you a pic of what those flowers did on a small scale very effective. Agreed! Though it can be confusing at times. I wonder when color stability became more reliable? I don't think we are completely there yet. I remember that when we moved to our current home about 18 years ago, I tried to identify an existing climbing rose, and probably planted in the 1940's. Eventually I did. It was the pernetiana Climbing Shot Silk. Talk about variable! Yellow, pink, or almost any combination of the two. We lost the original plant during a repair and remodel. I have since replaced it. It might just take some time to build. I've found that with seedlings that I have started. It's a beautiful rose!

That is beautiful. Right many of my Leontine Gervais seedlings are now producing their first buds. It's an exciting time here.

Let me say that I had some VERY weak seedlings last year that weren't "fit" to get planted into the garden last year, so they remained in pots in the driveways (gardening ala Connie), and the majority are looking 100 times more vigorous this year! I wonder how many "slow to warm up" seedlings are culled prematurely by the hybridizers.

Judging by the flower alone, this little lady is definitely a winner. The outer petals are darker than the inner ones, there's a mottling that looks kinda stripey, and the inside of the flower has a hint of gold that makes it glow.

Commercial hybridizers have the pressure to produce winners continuously, so they don't have the luxury of being able to hang onto their substandard-appearing seedlings. Amateurs don't have this pressure, if they have enough space to handle the pots. You have a long driveway, Robert ... I think you're good for a while.

This little lady definitely deserves space in the ground this year, to see how she performs outside.

(as I previewed this post, I noticed that those leaves look pretty bad. I think it's time to take her out from under the lights and put her in the greenhouse till later this spring. Maybe that will help ... she already gets fish emulsion, so I don't think fertilizer is the problem. Maybe she used all her energy to make the flower. Poor thing.)

Could be a bad case of spider mites-- check right away. Or else iron deficiency.

I got to see the newer pictures...wow..she's pretty. I've got quite a few seedlings from Leontine that are setting buds now. This is a very exciting time.

I've had some of the seedlings start out with leaves that aren't so great either, but, in time, many produced much nicer leaves.

I wonder who the father is.... nearby are Clair Matin, MAC, Sombreuil, Albertine, the list goes on.

Lovely bloom. Congratulations to you both on bringing this bloom to fruition. Am looking forward to seeing the blooms from the other seedlings as they appear. So far 0 germinations in my 5 cups, :o(
