Complete Newbie, lots of questions!

Hello everyone! I've recently become interested in roses, (I already grow tomatoes each summer) which has led me to becoming interested in composting. From what I've read here so far, I can compost practically anything. I guess my question is would putting the "ingredients" in a 2qt plastic jar work? I thought that way when I add stuff I can put the lid on for a minute and just give it a good shake-up. Plus it would be easy to carry from one area to another. Being mid-winter, I have it in our garage, which hubby is NOT thrilled about. So if it has the right mix, it won't smell rotten? That might soften him up a bit! How about things like bread? So far I have egg shells, banana and orange peels(cut small to speed it up?), coffee grounds, torn up leaves, and torn up paper towels. If this will work, I'll probably have a few jars going at a time. Thanks for any advice I receive.

Shelley
