I live in central MS (z8a)about as hot and humid as you can get, well maybe not quite as bad as south LA. Crepuscule, Celine Forestier and all the other noisettes I grow do extremely well for me. I don't personally grow Reve d'Or but I've seen several of them around and it too does very well. I know Patricia had trouble with hers but I think (hope) that's an isolated case.

The yellow tea-noisettes grow beautifully in ARE's garden north of Houston, which definitely is an area with both heat and humidity. They are beautiful, healthy, fragrant--need to try one or three!!!

Jovy, check out a post called "three came today" by duchesse_nalabama. I just posted several pics of E Veyrat Hermanos (Tea-Noisette) that you might enjoy seeing. He's a yellow/pink blend, AND he's very vigorous.

You know when I saw that thread I was worried too. It was the first time I'd heard of crepuscule being finicky and I'm also relatively new to old roses. mine are babies but they didn't even go dormant for me and we got down into the mid to lower teens a few times this winter, so I'm not ready to lose hope quite yet. I have two growing against the south wall of my brick house, so that might be helping them. Carol it was picture like yours that made me decide that I absolutely had to have her, how old is yours. Whew, I sure am glad to get these responses. I had actually gone to the Chamblee's and ARE's web sites and taken Crepuscule off of my wish lists. Just for insurance, though, I think I'll still get Buff Beauty first! Since I DO live in what's supposed to be the perfect place for noisettes, I'll have to get at least one in the near future. Like I've said, I love the yellow/apricot ones. Which would be the best, in your opinion? Would it be Crepuscule?

Jovy, I'm just north of Baton Rouge and Reve d'Or is by FAR my most vigorous grower! It's even more loaded with blooms now than in this photo, too. I have a Buff Beauty that is doing OK, but I'm afraid it got hit with some spray the city put in our ditch.

I was one of those whose Crepuscule didn't do well over the winter. I think it's those of us in less hot areas of the country who have trouble growing the yellow/apricot noisettes. I also had Celine Forrestier which is now gone. Too sad that these beautiful roses don't thrive in our cooler summer weather.

I apologize for posting the information about Crepuscule here. I should have addressed Ann in a private E-mail. My Crepuscule pictures have been posted here for years on the gallery and were quite beautiful and I know several people wrote me to tell me they had been enabled to Crepuscule after seeing the pictures, so I am quite sorry now that I posted the downside to mine, which may have had nothing to do with anything but the drought we went through, so go buy Crepuscule. It's a beautiful monster. It is truly the prettiest rose I ever had in my garden and I am sad that I have lost it (all of them) and I apologize that I mentioned it on this board. Go buy. It's a worthy rose and although I lost mine, it is better to have loved and lost than never to have lvoed at all.

Patricia, why should you apologize for posting the downside of any rose? I want to know the downside of a rose, if there is one. As long as we get honest reporting, then I couldn't wish for anything more. So I can gather that Crepuscule doesn't take cold well and may not be very drought tolerant. That's two nice things to know. I have a drip system set up in my yard, so drought shouldn't be a problem. And cold is never a problem in South Louisiana. Redbird, I love your Reve d'Or!

Jovy, I also have Buff Beauty and it really is a "beauty" but it doesn't bloom nearly as often as Crepuscule or Reve d'Or. Still, it's a wonderful rose and well worth having in your garden. I have Buff Beauty planted with Betty Corning clematis and it is a gorgeous combination.

Yolana, I think that Crepuscule has been in my garden for about 5 years.

Crepuscule is a different shade of yellow than RdO and not as massive in my garden. Both are wonderful roses.

Actually, last spring's Reve d'Or and Alister Stella Grey went right into the ground, and have grown bigger, faster, in their first year than I believe any rose I've ever planted.*

*Except the rugosa Sir Thomas Lipton, which grows to monstrous size by feeding on unwary pets and small children. Call it "Audrey."

I grow lots of yellow/buff antiques now since you have all enabled me. I grow them in downtown Atlanta - which is a heat and humidity island. For two years they did not get any supplemental water in severe drought conditions - temps 100 or more for two months with no rains....they suffered but are just fine this year. Their soil is not very well ammended either.
I'm wondering if this discussion really shows the climactic differences between the geographic locations of zones 7 & 8. My climate zone 8 is nothing at all like the zone 8 in Oregon. I wish "they" (the powers that be who make zones) would really address this issue. It makes a huge difference!!

Unfortunately the USDA zones are based on one variable: winter lows. This is of course the key concern for farmers; but rosarians and other gardeners need info on summer heat, rainfall, humidity, soil....

Westerners have the blessing of the Sunset zones, which divide up the region into 24 climate types based on many of these factors. But if you live east of the Rockies, there's no equivalent system.

(That's a HINT, Southern Living editors....)

I don't know if there is an eastern equivalent, but I can tell you that these zone breakdowns are very useful.
They really make me understand why our conditions are what they are.
And they update them periodically, too.

What y'all need back there is a SUNRISE EASTERN GARDEN BOOK!

Nearly a year later and I planted Buff Beauty last October. Just two days ago, I was at the Spring Garden Show in Baton Rouge and saw a booth with a beautiful Crepuscule plant in a gallon pot for sale. I just couldn't keep my hands off of it and bought it. In months ahead maybe I'll have reports on it to share with all.

I just planted Crepescule this Feb. and am hoping for great things. Mine was in a 2 gal pot from a local vendor who buys from Chamblees.I have cl. Devoniensis on order from Vintage.

I have been dreaming of Crepescule here in zone 8 as well. I know there are a few folks in this area who have had success with it..hum

"Alistair Stella Gray" grows and blooms well in our cool coastal micro-climate, though I wouldn't try growing it within c. 10 miles of the S.F. coastline, where there is more fog during the months of summer.
- I've longed for "Marechal Niel" ever since I first admired it at vintagegardens, it is such a lemony-creamy-luscious yellow rose. But I've heard it needs quite a bit of heat to do well.
Does anyone know how much more heat "Marechal Niel" would need, compared to Reve d'Or" which grows and blooms well here c. 7 miles east of San Francisco, California in Oakland.
Our gardens' micro-climate has summer temps that are most often in the 70's and 80's and more rarely in the low 90's F and where frost is as rare as hens' dentures.

I have both MN and ASG. ASG is tall and bushy at the top. His spot forces him to grow more upright. MN is spread on a wide fence and gets sun for several hrs. a day. He is loaded with buds. ASG rebloomed more last year but I'm looking fw to this season b/c both are more established. I think this will be the third spring for them both.

Chiming in from Maryland here - Both Crepuscule and ASG do great for me in Baltimore's humid summers.

Solicitr and others, actually some years ago Sunset published a series of gardening books for the entire country, setting up climate zones for everyone just as they have done for the west. They didn't stay in print, so they must not have been popular. However, you can still find them from used book vendors.

I can tell you that on the east coast in Brooklyn New York, Crepuscule is just about perfect. In fact, I just cut the hell out of it because it's growing into the neighboring garden. It took a few years to get going but once it did it just grows in all directions. It kind of mounds on itself - just about as wide as tall. As of now it's about eight feet or so in all directions.

This winter we had more than usual dieback but I don't think it was from cold so much as snow load - we had a few really heavy snowfalls that broke a number of tree limbs and rose canes.

I don't have any other noisettes because I was afraid they'd get too big. But another yellow, Isabella Sprunt, is going to rival Crepuscule for size this summer. It's not as mounding a plant, more of a twiggy thing, but much bigger than I ever imagined it would ever be. So there are 2 yellow / apricot roses that might work for you.

We're pretty humid over here - we're at sea level after all, and we have wet winters that seem to be getting colder in spite of global warming. Nonetheless, while everything else blackspots or dies, these 2 roses are much hardier than given credit for.

I grew up in Brooklyn...small world. The Rose Garden by the Brooklyn Museum has Crepsule and you are right it is gorgeous. Well I should say it had...havent been their in 11 years.
Anyhoo I loved it so much that I ordered it this year and just received it. Winters are a tad warmer in Washington and I plan to situate it on the south side of a stockade fence with the house running perpendicular. That is the warmest area and it should be protected enough to do well. Am going to plant Reve d'or next to it. Hope they compliment each other. Maybe with a blue clematis?
I'll try to post next year to let all know if we had success.

Thanks, Rosefolly, for mentioning Sunset's other books. Found the Nationwide one which lists the 45 Climate Zones in the contents, so I googled and voila! I'm zone 26. Unfortunately, it didn't give much detail and nothing I didn't know. In fact, practically the whole peninsula is zone 26, and I'm at the northernmost limit. Now I'd like to see a list of plants for this zone - and a list of don'ts.

Crepuscule is one of my very favorites. I have a huge one trained as a standard which weeps on a tall fence. It has millions of buds on it right now...just getting ready to burst into bloom. It is a show stopper. I am in east Texas and it is in full, hot all day sun. I water and fertilize....it is a spectatular rose than should be in every garden.

I used to have Crepuscule for my small arch. Cre did not bloom much and got some BS, so I gave away. Cre was faily young, probably about 4 years old.

I have Marechal Niel for my arbor, and when MN decides to put beautiful blooms, it sure does. It is not a strong rose and does not grow much, probably 15ft tall for the tallest part.

I also have Reve d'Or. If you are looking for a bullet proof Noisette, you need this one. In the first year, this rose grew 15ft from a rooted stick. The canes are very soft and does not have much thorns so it is very easy to tie to the structure. My arbor is covered with beautiful blooms with no sign of pests or diseases.
