4x8' tempered glass

I was lookin' for some old windows to top my cold frame, 8x4'3", (hair-brained idea has to wait a while), talked to a merchant in another close by town and he said that he wold cut me a deal on 4 4x8' sheets of 1/4" tempered glass ($50) he had. I said sure (although I only need 1, cheaper than the plexiglass i looked @ ) Turns out he had 5 not 4 (so my deal was better than it started, I did call and confess there were more pieces, he was just happy they were gone) Here's my REALLY stupid question:

I had in my head that I would @ some point use double pane windows for the insulation value, to build the GH I really want, Do I need to look for some covering to insulate these when the time comes that we put a real GH together?

Double pane is always better than single pane for winter heating. Since I am in a slightly milder climate than you (Zone 8) and only keep my greenhouse at about 38F in the winter, I went with single pane glass.

Any way, congratulations on the great deal you got. If you use these panes for that future greenhouse, you can easily improve the R-value by applying bubble wrap to them in winter. A lot of people just order big rolls of the stuff online from a packaging materials web site, because it's usually a lot cheaper than buying the same type of material from a greenhouse supplies store. You simply cut it to size and use a soapy solution, a temporary spray adhesive, or clips to hold it in place. You can then pull it off and store it in the summer.

(One other thing...I assume you know that tempered glass cannot be re-cut?)

(I worked in a glass shop for 4yrs, but, thanks for the reminder, you sounded just like me...lol) I was thinkin' that I'd need something like bubble wrap, just wanted someone that is more experienced that I (and maybe less dangerous)...........It will become a GH at some point, but SB starts Monday, so free time (read that as extra time) is in short supply until June...........My DH is starting to plan it tho, it's kinda sounding like a taj mahal, of course he then blames me (as in 'well, Tracy had to have the Taj Mahal of chicken coops'.(his plan lol)...) Thanks again.............T

Three years later and we finally know about this product. I don't consider this house to be our forever house so I was looking for budget friendly countertops. After visiting a local shop we found ceramic slabs that were 24" x 48" and decided to put that in since it would require minimal grout lines; three to be exact, no big deal. Today, we went to the store and the nice lady introduced us to travertine thin slab sheets that are different sizes depending on the color. We chose 38" x 84" which means we will only have one butt-joint line in our L-shape kitchen and our 3' x 4' island will have one continuous slab sheet (the left over will be used for backsplash along with glass tile). my Samsung fridge is like 18 months old. I took out the shelves and set them in the sink the empty sink. The SECOND the shelf touched the sink, it EXPLODED. I don’t mean that it cracked or shattered. I mean it EXPLODED. Thank goodness I was wearing my glasses or I would probably be blind right now. The tiny bits of glass got all over me, my clothes, my hair, and my kitchen. So, I had to clean up the kitchen. Then, I had to strip off my clothes because I didn’t want to shed bits of glass throughout the house and go STRAIGHT to the shower to get the glass out of my hair. Honestly, this is INSANE!!! Below here you can see the sides of the shelf and most of the glass that I swept off the floor. (please disregard the dog hair).

I don't know exactly how many you should have, but you might think twice about hanging a pendant over the middle of your island. It will be hard to change the bulbs. We have three pendants over an island roughly the same size as yours, and frankly I wish we didn't. They are a pain in the butt, particularly the one over the middle of the island.

Can you put tempered smart glass in a window inside a shower?

Adding to my original question... There are versions of smart glass that are AC powered and versions that are DC powered. There are versions that use applied coating inside a laminated glass sandwich, and versions that use LCD's, also inside a laminated glass. Some types of smart glass use a film that may be inside a laminate or could be adhered directly to a glass substrate. The film versions tend to be very hazy when in clear state. Probably not a big deal in a shower application, but would be very noticeable, and possibly unacceptable, if used in a picture window or patio door, for example. Some versions darken the glass when activated, some are strictly privacy and result in an etched appearance when activated. Potentially laminated versions can be exceptionally heavy because of the multiple layers of glass needed in the construction. Some of these products might have 3 or even 4 layers of glass substrate in the laminated glass sandwich...while as mentioned, some film versions are nothing more that a single glass lite with an adhered film. I would be very concerned about longevity if considering using a non-laminated applied film version in a shower, and i would also be very concerned about ensuring acceptability of using an AC powered version in a shower.
