The ones in the picture are (i believe) from St. James Lighting or Carolina lanterns called 'Gothic Cage'. I have recessed lighting throughout my kitchen already and lots of natural light during the daytime. The lanterns I had previously were 15 inches and were uprights as well and I never had an issue where there was not enough light in the kitchen. My main concern is just size, I am a fan of the larger pendant lights but don't want to get them and have them too large. Thank you for any help!

Hi all, I am in the process of building a house. It's a modern, energy efficient house in Austin, TX. It's fairly small at 1250 sq ft with an open floor plan on the ground floor that consists of an open kitchen/living/dining area, the kitchen opening up immediately to your left as you walk in the front door. There is a 4'8" waterfall kitchen island in the middle of the kitchen. I am trying to figure out pendant lighting (type, size, and number) for above the island. I am going for a mix of modern farmhouse and more sophisticated boho chic. I had originally picked out two 16"W x 24"H vintage gold lanterns, but I now think these will be too large for the 4'8" island and overwhelm the space. I am alternatively considering two cylindrical or round mini pendants by Thomas O'Brien (called Katie) that are 7"W x 15.75"H or 12"W x 14"H. What size would be better? Would two be the right number of pendants?

It all depends on how many pendants you want to have. for a 90" island you probably want 3-5 pendants. An odd number of pendants over an island works best. Let's say in your case the island is 90" and you want to have 3 pendants- 10" diameter each. Combined all diameter will be 30"... 90"-30"=60" 3 pendants+1 =4 (number of spaces in between the lights and ends of the island. Now take 60/4=15" that will give you the distance between each light. This is just an example: Layout How it will look in reality. You can go with 3-12" pendants and reduce space in between, or put smaller pendants over the overhang area if you have it and add a few recessed lights over the main area, or you can put 2 larger pendants but that would be more like mini chandeliers, over the entire area. There is a few ways this can be done depends on the look you want to have. Good luck

We're glad you asked! We have advice about this very subject. Pendant size is determined by taking the width (not length) of your island in inches and subtracting 12. The number you get is a good maximum size for a pendant light. We recommend spacing pendants about 2 feet apart, so with your 8 foot island you could definitely go for 3 pendants. If you do choose 3, choose ones that are a bit smaller than the maximum size per pendant as mentioned above. If you go for 2, you could pick out larger pendants (which is a popular look these days), more towards that maximum size per pendant.
