pendant lighting for 8 ft. island with 9 ft ceilings

If I put 2 pendants how large should they be? If I put 3 how big? What distance apart?

We're glad you asked! We have advice about this very subject.

Pendant size is determined by taking the width (not length) of your island in inches and subtracting 12. The number you get is a good maximum size for a pendant light.

We recommend spacing pendants about 2 feet apart, so with your 8 foot island you could definitely go for 3 pendants. If you do choose 3, choose ones that are a bit smaller than the maximum size per pendant as mentioned above. If you go for 2, you could pick out larger pendants (which is a popular look these days), more towards that maximum size per pendant.

We are using 3 of the 10" Pottery Barn City Glass pendants over our 9' island. I was also worried about having enough task lighting, so we added a can light over the island sink. Just wanted to add that many use lanterns over the island for an airy look and plenty of light.

Thank you Jan! I’ll get back on the info of the island size. Another dilemma, I’m painting the kitchen cabinets SW extra white on the uppers and SW Cascades a dark beautifully rich green on lowers and island. I have a section where the double oven and fridge nook are connected. Do I paint that whole section white or cascades?

Go with 3, unless the 24" pendants cast a very bright/wide light. Spaced correctly, I think 3 would look more balanced on an island spanning 10', with little liklihood of casting shadows. Try suspending cut up boxes over your island to better visualize 2 vs. 3 lights.
