How to prevent winter vole damage to berries?
Comments (5)I use the cheapest Gempler traps that snap instead of lock when baiting with poison. The bait I use for spring traps is usually peanuts or some other nut if I have stale ones around the house. Insects, especially ants, often remove peanut butter outdoors. I use the trays- plastic ones about 4" high and about 20" long by 14" wide- to cover the spring traps and keep birds and weather out. I weight trays with rocks to keep wind from blowing them away. The reason I use these trays is that they happen to be around for using in my greenhouse. You could improvise something else. If it gets real snowey I neglect traps until thaw. The idea is to get things under control before snow cover gets in the way. I don't think there's much breeding going on outdoors during winter. I also include a few rat traps when there are any wood rats or chipmonks around just to stop them from springing all my traps. I have no other beef against wood rats....See MoreLow tunnel hoop house to help prevent deer damage
Comments (7)The only thing I've planted that the deer don't bother is potatoes. (sigh) Sorry to hear about your problems, especially with the green bean re-planting. I've had to do that myself more than one season. Those %^&* deer managed to take at least one bite out of every single winter squash this past season. I kept my winter squash covered most of the season, but as soon as I left them uncovered for a day or two, they started nibbling. For the first time ever, even the carrots were eaten as soon as they came up. I have had success when my apple trees were young with a product called Hinder. It's an ammonia based spray. But, the thought of spraying it on my veggies doesn't appeal to me much. Good luck on your plans. I'd be interested in hearing what you do and how it comes out....See MorePreventing birds.
Comments (8)No luck this time but this can be a good thing. The battery cut out after 40 min and no birds, it should of lasted for about 2 hours but I forgot to charge it all the way. Anyway I made this out of a red cup with ductape and put my trusty old Gopro up. I was trying to think that the birds would fly around the red cup Tomorrow I will do the other direction and make it spin more. Knock on wood though no new pecks in the new maters I pulled off today, so maybe those CD's are really helping a lot? lol Edit: on Bird net, I jut got it today and will do it in a few days for added protection. So now I got the water pan out, CD's reflecting and gona try to find that reflective tape as well. Comments (62)Khalid: I didn't see your message until I came back to this thread. Thank you for what you wrote: " I regularly use black tea with ginger and cinnamon. Honey (with black pepper if I have a source throat), cardamom (small and large), garlic (as part of all our curries), onions (an integral part of our curry), as well as a few more herbs, spices etc." All those have anti-viral and anti-bacterial .. I agree with using food as preventive medicine, rather than dangerous flu-shot (combining virus). Carol: Glad to hear that you are back on schedule .. I am delighted to hear of your progress & success. It feels SO GOOD to have looser pants, and I wish everyone have that experience with daily exercise. Sam: does your Achilles tendon hurt to wear shoes with heels? I don't like shoes with heels: one of my foot is shorter than the other. I actually do more exercise on the treadmill than outside ... I can wear my husband Walmart open-heel plastic clog, I insert a memory foam inside ... and wear that on the treadmill. I wear size 7 woman, but I need a BIG shoe to insert the thick $5 memory foam. The plastic clog has bigger toe-box than running shoe, plus no need for lacing....See Morelavender_lass
