Sydonie has suckered for me. (HP)

Baronne Prevost (HP) suckers for me. Pink Pet also suckers like crazy. Look them up on the "helpmefind" web site. 1,000's of roses.

I have a rose that has been tentatively ID'd as Ispahan Damask that has created its own little thicket by suckering all over the place. Rugosa species will, I imagine the hybrids would too but I don't know for sure.

Eugene de Beauharnais has suckered vigorously in a friend's garden here. Over the past 25+ years, it has developed four distinct clumps there quite nicely. My found rose, Crestline Mulberry will also sucker. Not wildly like many species, but it will definitely colonize, developing into a substantial clump with time.
Grandmother's Hat will throw the odd basal sufficiently distant from the crown of the plant to qualify as 'suckering'. I frequently was able to divide many of the mosses I grew such as Deuil de Paul Fontaine because they spread out a bit as the clump grew. Very many of the older European type garden roses can spread via underground "basals" or suckers, particularly in good garden soil. Some take longer than others and spread farther, but many can be propagated this way. Kim

The only Alba I planted here, Sappho, ran like a rabbit -- I would find sprouts 3', 4', even 5' from the original plant. I finally got tired of trying to contain it, keep it from invading other roses, so took it out. Nominally, I should add, because it is still here, where some suckers took refuge under a stone wall, from which it will be tough to remove them...

My Grandmother's Hat had three stout "basals" or suckers appear this past month or so (after 2 years in the ground, so it's young), at distances from 1 to 1.5' from the base.

Do you remember did it bloom once a year? or more? I don't know if they all do, but I know ramblers will sucker. Rugosas and wild roses will.
I looked at pictures of Bella Donna and right off hand nothing rings a bell. Do you remember anything else about the plant?

I think I had formed a vague notion that only gallicas suckered. It is always mentioned in connection with them, and I could not remember seeing or hearing about suckering with other roses. (I obviously do not mean rootstock suckers. *shudder*)

I don't expect to identify the long-lost rose with my hazy impressions of it. I do hope to satisfy my vague memory with a rose that 1. is of a light pink, 2. sends travelling suckers, and 3. has an overall "soft" quality. How's that for vague? ;)

The alba and damask roses certainly met the blossom requirements, and albas seem to have the necessary "softness" (I'm not really sure what I mean by that, but I know it when I see it.), I just could not remember if they would send travelling suckers.

I got interested in your question and did a search on hmf. I learned that the china, 'Hermosa' suckers. I put in the link to 'Hermosa' in case you want to look at it. Hermosa would do well in SC, I think.

And I can also add that yes, at least one hybrid rugosa suckers, 'Polareis.' I suspect they all do but only know about that one from personal experience.

There are some surprises for me here among the roses listed as suckerers: I always thought of the warm climate roses as little given to suckering. I believe that all the once-blooming old roses sucker more or less: Gallicas, Albas, Centifolias, Mosses, Damasks. The natural growth habit of Gallicas is multiple canes coming out of the ground in a thicket, unlike Teas which part from a single point at ground level, at least such has been my experience. The others generally sucker slowly and sparingly. Hybrid close relatives of the once-blooming old roses sucker too, like the Portlands and at least some of the Hybrid Perpetuals. R. foetida suckers. It's a natural habit for a lot of roses. How far suckers travel from the base of the plant, how many suckers it makes, depend on the variety, the vigor of the plant, and perhaps the soil as well: doesn't clay soil slow down suckering?
About your mystery rose, do you remember anything about what the leaves, thorns, and any hips were like? Albas often have a blueish or grayish foliage, for example; many Damasks have a soft-looking, lettuce green foliage, and tubular hips. And how about the scent?

In addition to the once-blooming OGRs of European descent, rugosas are notorious for suckering.

I have even had the found HP "Grandmother's Hat" sucker, though only moderately.

A rose that I collected in North Alabama, called Shailer's Provence, suckers. It's a gracefull rose, with arching canes and a loose pink flowers. Here's a link that might help. The color is a little off- its softer in person.
