Poulan Wood Shark Chainsaw

I Have purchased twice now two poulan chain saws and both times i have had problems with the pull rope. It gets difficult to pull after a very short amount of time, compared to a Craftsman I have had in the past it is a piece of crap. I might as well go pull my arm out of the socket as spend time fixing this problem.

I plan to return this one and make the trip to town to get a Craftsmand Chainsaw. Never again will I make the quick trip to wally world to get a quick fix chainsaw.

Poulan probably makes the Craftsman for Sears.

I expand on canguy's comments and say you can do much better than both Poulan and Craftsman.

There are afforable saws from Husqvarna, Stihl, Dolmar & Echo. Even the consumer saws from these folks will outlast the big box store saws.

Just a note, the Echo & Husqvarna saws at the big box stores are the lowest quality from those brands, so you should atleast check out those brands at a chainsaw dealer.

If you would care to comment on your intended use, you might receive some advice on which saws to consider.

Never mind answered my own question. Just use only the one gasket your carb original came with. If you don't know, then use the smooth one as that's the updated version.

Ewalk: Thanks for the tip on "the Chainsaw Collector's Corner online", I'll check it out. Very interesting info in the note: 1. My father told me hard wood would split easier after it freezes. 2. This will be the 3rd season to use the nice splitter given to me. I thought they were too slow initially but almost a must now. LOL 3. "Iron Wood" is what I have heard Mesquite wood called. We have plenty of it in this general area and West and South of us. It's a choice wood for BBQing/Grilling for flavor vs heat (I mix pecan and mesquite for flavor). I was warned not to burn it straight in a fireplace because it burns too hot and will cause damages. I was guaranteed it would not hurt my fireplace. Burning one load of mesquite proved them wrong and they had to replace the two 30" sections of chimney pipe. When I have excess mesquite I'll put one log in with oak or pecan w/o a problem. We could be talking about a different wood because mesquite is plentiful in the Dry Plain Areas vs around moisture here. Plus they are basically small trees with dangerous thorns on them. Willow trees are our trees that grow close to water. They are soft and not good to burn but will after they dry-out. Cedar does not grow to any size here. I have not heard of it being burned here due to rosin as pine but not due to size. Bodoc (?) wood was one I learned the hard way on not to burn in an open fireplace due to excessive poping and sparks going across the room. Elm is a plentiful fair burning wood here. Usually the carb. is leaking internally (cracked or gasket problem??)causing the high idle?? (dumping more fuel thus causes saw to race up) or it could be as simple as the throttle hanging up???. I would try close inspection of the linkage, the carb. inspection and rebuild if you haven't already????

Good Experiment Snuffyinati! That makes it worth the time. Switching to a non self sharpening chain made a world of difference in quality cutting with a 12 Electric McCulloch. I did remove that stone for in the attachment that had chiseling type teeth vs barracuda (that dig in vs chiseling). Porting the barÃ¢ÂÂs oil port (approx a 32nd) made a world of difference in quality of oiling the bar and chain. I feel the porting cleaned the port that was partially blocked. Since porting by manually twisting a drill into the port I have had a clean flow at last 2 yrs. I checked the depth to not over drill with wire. Plus I back-flush the port and pump with naphtha. The porting insures cleaning and more output. At some point IMO porting will possibly have an affect on the designed flow other than louder noise. With my Ringing Ears I will use Muffs and Plugs If I feel I am hearing too much.

Yup I agree. If it takes buying a $500 saw to learn how to run one, then so be it. Too bad the posters before me can only give the same old tired brainless 'helpful' resonse of 'go buy an expensive european pro saw' when we all know.. eh, never mind.

I have had a Poulan "Wood Shark" for about 5yrs now. I bought it mainly to just clear tree limbs/brush that fall,because my property has many large and old trees.BUT, I have sawed just about every size tree,dead or alive for friends/family/church. I mean some as much as 3' in diameter.I have worn out several chains and replaced them and replaced the spark plug a few times, and that is all I have spent on this saw that I paid $99 for. I feed my wood stove every winter on "The Wood Shark" It might die tomorrow but if so,I think I will mount it on the wall as a deserving trophy.

Depends on how new or old the wood shark is. I don't like the clutch setup on the new ones. a big lump of plastic surrounds the clutch disk. If you not careful you heat it up too much when it gets plugged up and not oiling right. now it starts to melt the plastic and lock up the clutch drum.

My early 2000 model does not have this type of clutch setup and I have cut a many of stumps out with it. The is nothing harder on saws than cutting stumps out in and tic tac toe pattern and popping them out with a sludge hammer.

Mine still runs and looks like new, and cuts pretty good also, nothing like my 345, but I only gave 69 bucks new at wally world for my 14"er
