How to train a rose to a porch

I have a New Dawn rose that I'd like to train up a west side wooden porch pillar and along the roof line of the porch. There's no balustrade, bric-a-brac or built in trellis.

What's the best way to secure this particularly thorny rose to the porch? Would you install trellising from the floor level to the roof supports and then some sort of anchoring to train it horizontally or should it be "fanned out" by securing the canes at angles from the base? Other ideas for best way to position this rose to best advantage?
