WONDERFUL day! GREAT to see so many great folks. I have a zillion pix -- but we were in the garden this morning for "Afterglow, " and now we're heading home.
Farmland, trees and hills rolling by -- home tomorrow.

What a lovely day in a lovely garden. I'm glad that you got Lady Roberts Jackie. I think Paula got hers too. I got to the sale a bit late and was amused to see the roses that were the most wanted in years past still available. There were still Benny Lopez, and Forest Ranch Pom Pom for sale. I picked up a Forest Ranch Pom Pom. Gregg thinks that Benny might be Ardoisee de Lyon, which I have. I also picked up Narrow Water, Marbree, and Mary Lawrence's Shell Rose. I had fun talking other folks into buying things. I would liked to have gotten Car Wash. Where was Gean? Gean I missed you. I got so distracted I forgot to ask around,

Yes, the day was windy, particularly at the beginning - as we were setting out materials we put new meaning into the word "flyers," as pieces of paper flew off.

As usual, I didn't get to say hello to everybody. Gean, I know you were there but didn't see you. Zachary, did you make it? I got to say hi to Rosefolly and Jackie and Deron (and meet their husbands), and hug Pamela (Mendocinorose) and her husband, Michael, but that was about it. I saw fogrose and Priscilla (both at the front of the rose line, and jogging to the sales table after we cut the rope). I waved at Gregg Lowery and got to chat for a bit with Cass (Berndoodle). Janelle (Jannorcal), Jill Perry and Laura (organic tosca) were working. Who else from GW did I miss?

The roses were especially bountiful this year, and the garden looked blowsy and, yes, wanton - hope that everybody enjoyed it.

Thanks to everybody who came, and everybody who helped, and everybody who bought roses!

No...I was delayed in departing home, so I didn't get there until late afternoon. But I'm going back in the morning. 'Lady Roberts' is STUNNING! I can't wait to go see her again!!!

I got there at 9:30 and was so distracted by the roses I ran out of time and didn't go on an active hunt for people ... but I did I meet Jannorcal, Jeri, Clay, the dals, Laura and Fred Boutin. I saw Darrell Schramm working the rose sale table. I recognized Anita by her nametag and pictures I'd seen of her ... but she was so truly busy that I didn't have the heart to interrupt her. Later I joined her rose tour but my time was up and I had to leave. I was there about 3 hours and enjoyed every minute.

I didn't buy a rose but did get an apron - maybe I won't lose my gloves from now on. The event seemed so well organized; kudos to all of you that make the event possible and work so hard on the roses in that cemetery.

On the drive down to Los Angeles I realized I never did meet Pam or Paula although I'd been looking for both of you. But as I said, I was really distracted by the roses in the cemetery.

I know a lot of pix will be shared; the cemetery roses are really almost overwhelming - but here is a shot of the prettiest 'Sally Holmes' I've come across. So many more there as well ... I am so glad I was able to come and see that garden. I hope another time to meet up again with some of you all. Pam, I missed giving you a hug, because I'd planned to! Gean

I must have known you were going to be there Gean but I guess it slipped my mind in the excitement of getting my 'Lady Roberts', which like Jackie I am planning to plant near 'Anna Olivier'. I'm quite disappointed that we did not get to meet.

In fact reading this thread I see that there were quite a few people I know who were there that I did not actually see. I guess I got so caught up with the roses my eyes were dazed! Now that is too bad. I go there to see friends as much as I do to see roses.

Karen was there, too - don't remember her GW name but she's turned into a key cemetery volunteer, propagating for us and helping with the garden. Her husband Tom does yeoman labor for us too and is so funny and helpful! They drive up from Livermore - Debbie from Livermore was also at the Open Garden. It really is such a wonderful gathering of rosarians - so much fun!

It was lovely to be able to go to the event again and get some roses. I ended up with 6 when you count the one that each of my kids got.

The best part was meeting Jeri and Clay and their doggies.

I didn't know so many of the folks walking around were Garden Webers too.

That would be my suggestion: to somehow have a way of 'advertising' the Garden Webers to each other. Maybe a set meeting time and location in the garden? How about 11:30 at Sally Holmes, for example. Or noon at Mark Hopkins' Mausoleum? We could then do a round robin of self-introductions with our real names and our GW names.

Anyway, Anita, it was a wonderful event in a magical place. Thanks to all who volunteer in such a special, special way.

BTW, the roses I got were one of the Benny Lopezes, Le Pactole (which scares me now after seeing how big the one in the cemetery has gotten), Mrs. B.R. Cant, and "Copperopolis Bar". My girlies got Vincent Godsiff and Alice Hamilton.

So, a lot more planting to do...but I'm not complaining. I look around at the cemetery and indeed even my own yard right now, and I am blessed to have such a chore on my to do list. The little bit of work is an investment with great dividends.

Got there at 8:30 and was third in line. Had a nice visit with Jeri and Clay's dogs while waiting on line.

Happy to say I got everything I wanted plus some surprises I didn't expect to find.

Rosefolly, I hope to meet you another time, but I totally relate to being dazed by the roses. If I can come down again next year I would love to come to a GW picnic or get together to have more time to visit and meet more folks.

I went and had so much fun! I was "dazed by the roses" too! I met Anita and Clay and the dogs! I'm not sure I have ever met such mellow, sweet canines in my life. They make you want to go out and get yourself a long haired dalmatian!

I came home with a one gallon Grandmother's Hat, a one gallon Pink Gruss An Aachen, and a two gallon Souvenir du Dr. Jaiman. And now, I have no idea what to do with them. Do I nurse them for a while? Do they need just water or fertilizer? My Grandmother's Hat is a little twig. The other two have one bloom.

The day was amazing. I think I could go to the cemetery day after day and still not see everything there is to see in the detail I want to remember. I kept walking around each rose thinking, "I need a home with MUCH more land!" :)

The beauty of the cemetery is overwhelming. The kindness of the people volunteering there is equally so!

You need to keep these roses in pots until this fall. The Souv du Dr. Jamain was recently potted up to the two-gallon size. The Pink Gruss an Aachens looked pretty vigorous and could probably be potted up soon. If Grandmother's Hat is just a twig, then leave it in the one-gallon for a while.

It's best to take off the flower buds, if you can stand it, and let the roses build vegetative growth and roots.

They need sun - morning sun and some afternoon shade would probably be best if you can do it. Souv de Dr. Jamain will always need some protection from afternoon sun so that its blooms don't fry. The other two are full-sun lovers once they grow up a bit.

I usually give my potted roses some food, either in the form of diluted liquid fertilizer, slow-release fertilizer such as Osmocote, or some sort of organic fertilizer. I honestly don't think it matters much in the pots - nitrogen washes out as you water, and you need to replace it, and I don't think the plants care in what form it comes. In the ground, I want to build soil and the organisms that live in it. I use organic fertilizer, and mulch with composted horse manure and apply alfalfa in the spring.
