Suggested Vines that tolerate Wet?

I need to screen a 2' high 4'diameter circular 'mound/wall' of cinder blocks with a vine that will leaf out early and cover the ugly until the cannas and fallopia grow up and hide (only part of)it later.problem is that the ground is perpetually wet there; lonicera has not done well there. any vine suggestions? thank you

I can not think of a single vine that will survive in perpetual wet...is it possible to fill the centre of the cinder blocks with soil (thereby by passing the wet)and possibly plant IN the cinderblocks something that cascade down the cinderblocks... there are a lot of creeping dianthus that look their best in the spring...snow in summer..silver follage with sparkling white flowers...another totally outside the box idea would be to go to the hypertufu forum and look into 'plastering' the outside of the cinderblock with hypertufu (concrete mix) so that it resembles a stone wall..

this may sound weird, but clematis came to mind. They do like a lot of water. A vigorous grower like Polish Spirit might do the job.

My damp poor-draining area is more shade, but I get a few blooms from some clematis there. (Kermisina). It doesn't die out. Some springs it is super soggy there for months.

however, when you say lonicera has not done well, that is worrisome because I thought lonicera was tough as nails.

Evergreen vines hardy in zone 5 are limited - very limited. And the situation is complicated by being partially shaded and with poor drainage. English ivy might work, although I hesitate to suggest something that is considered invasive in many parts of the country. If you have space, a mixture of shrubs would be a much better solution, perhaps shrub dogwoods and willows and clethra. The dogwoods and willows would offer winter interest through their stem colors if that's a requirement. Or winterberry.

Nord, my definition of wet feet relates to those varieties that are under water, which happened from time to time in certain areas of the field where I grew hundreds of tomato plants. I expect to see yellowed foliage when we've had lots of rain as we have this summer, I'm not that far from you, and of late it's been cool as well, but I see a warming trend coming up. If you were to look at many of my plants, now grown in Gro-bags in the backyard, with good drainage holes, you'd see that the majority of them do have a lot of yellow foliage, which I expect, and when the sun shines and the temps go up I know they'll be green again and grow just fine. One of the major lessosn I learned from under water plants is that different varieties have different capacities to withstand too much water. When soils are waterlogged the roots can't take up much oxygen or nutrients. But a few of the varieties did better than others and I think it's b'c transport within the plant is not the same with all varieties. But we already know that's true in terms of those varieties that are more susceptible to BER, which is a transport issue, not from root uptake but from transport of Ca++ within the plant. Last year I didn't get fruits off half of my plants, but was spared Late Blight probably b'c I knew it was around early and had Freda, who now has to do all my gardening for me, start with Daconil alternating with copper. And the year before, 2008 wasn't that much better as to fruit yield, etc., b'c it was so cold and rainy as well. I only know this plant by reputation, but American wisteria. One day I'll find one at a price I'm willing to pay because I want one for the swamp.

Mindy, I know you need to cover only 2' tall structure and this will not work for you, but for the larger applications both, Akebia quinata or less common A.trifoliata will be glad to call offered conditions 'The Home', but could easily become a rampant pest, especialy if it is somewhat sunny AND wet place.
Well, they'll grow rampant anyway, in any conditions :-))
In warmer end of zone 6 they are practicaly evergreen with foliage disappearing only close to X-mas and new growth become apparent as early as early March. Perfect for the screening chain link fences.

ha george; you are FUNNY!!!! you know, all you great gw posters,i may just try all your suggestions anyway(one at a time of course) because i am so sick of seeing these ugly blocks. the area is just above a septic/leaching area so gasses or something may be the problem for some plants there; that's what i've always wondered.
