I did it, I rooted a rose,

I have been searching for the rose Oyster Pearl for some time now. I could not find that rose anywhere. Someone here suggested I try to root one( I can't remember who it was that suggested it). Well my mom has 2 Oyster Pearl' rose bushes, so I took 2 cuttings from them. I dipped the 2 cane's in some rooting hormone. I started them on Feb 24, 2011. As you can see by the picture there are roots.

Should I leave them they way they are for a little longer or put them in small pots. There are alot of roots you just can't see them all. Sorry the picture is so small, I did not realize it was so small until I posted it here.

I used the see through container's so I could see when the cane put out roots. I hear that is how one fails to root a rose, is by tugging on the cane to see if it has rooted.

If you have any suggestions on what I should do now I would appreciate it. I live in the Az desert where it is going to get very, very hot this summer so that will be a challange in itself to keep them moist through the summer.

I should probably keep them out of the afternoon sun.

I can't believe I did it, I have tried so many times in the past and have failed. The cane would alway's turn brown and hard. I finally succeeded to get 2 canes to root. I am so excited.

I am open for suggestons on what to do now?????

I'd leave it in there until it gets some decent top growth. Then I'd pot it up into a one gallon container until it gets really well established. Congratulations!! It's exciting when you get them to root, isn't it?

Use sterilized mix when you repot, and a clean container, just in case. Though in AZ fungi and mold and such probably isn't so much of a problem.

When it is settled into a container after a week or two feed it with WEAK (1/4 strength) fish emulsion or other liquid fertilizer. Make sure you use very diluted. Congratulations! Getting a rose to root is so much fun.

(I was waiting around to respond so that someone who knew what they were doing could post a follow-up.) Now my two bits worth. When I had a greenhouse and did propagation experiments for my amusement I found that often I had better results starting woody cuttings when the plant was dormant. I never tried roses, hence my hesitation.

You're welcome! Oh, yes, I know La Crescenta weather! I had a very large (twelve-hundred-plus plants) rose garden in Newhall for eighteen years. Happily, I'm down to under two hundred here in Encino, now, not counting seedlings. I'd think once you have the plants sufficiently hardened off, putting them outside when the weather cools off, in a protected area while they continue maturing would be much better for them than anything indoors. Do you have issues with squirrels, rabbits or other rodents where you are? Hopefully not, as they can devour a new, tender young plant like those in a sitting. I budded some plants earlier this spring and they were developing nicely...until a rat or squirrel gnawed the shoots back to the shanks. They went far enough to even get the guard buds, so they failed. As long as you're not concerned with the plants blowing away or being washed away by heavy erosion, there isn't any winter storm weather you should really have to be concerned with there. It doesn't get cold enough to damage roses as a general rule. They're honestly not as fragile as we like to think they are! As long as the potting soil drains and doesn't remain goopy, soggy, it shouldn't be an issue for cuttings. I've planted all of mine in the plain old Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil because it remains damp enough for smaller pots to not dry out in a day when we have the heat and wind spike so common in our areas. It works just fine, much better than the non moisture control has because it does hold more water than the "regular stuff" without being soggy. The only bagged soil I've encountered in recent history which was real garbage has been Super Soil. It USED to be decent, but now is a mucky, goopy mess, so I'd avoid that like the plague. My dissatisfaction with the other brands I've more recently used has been they have dried out too quickly, often requiring being watered daily when it is hot, dry and/or windy. The Moisture Control hasn't. That can make a huge difference during a heat or wind spike. I even use the Moisture Control soil to raise my rose seedlings in with good success. I only cut it with either seed starter mix or perlite for the seed cover to prevent it from being too heavy to allow small seedlings from breaking through. If your bags are remaining sufficiently moist to only require watering every two weeks, you probably don't need to mist the cuttings. It sounds as if they are remaining moist enough. Too much misting in the bags can easily turn to rot very quickly. I'd only mist them if you're seeing them being flagging or wilting from heat. Otherwise, it seems you have your bases covered. I hesitate to say a hard pruning because I killed my Dublin Bay that way. I blew up your photo and I do see some growth here and there up the canes. I would suggest you start at the tips and clip off a piece looking for a good clear and moist greenish white center and work you way down removing only the wood that isn't healthy. Then wait a bit. It hasn't really been all that warm for very long and it might just need some extended warmth to kick start it. We have just come out of two successive bad winters and a lot of roses are sort of in shock I think.

I still have a top plastic bottle over the starter cane that acted as a greenhouse, (I forgot to add that above) should I take off the plastic container that is being used as the greenhouse and let it out into the air, or leave on the top plastic bottle??
Yes I was very excited not only did I get one, but both canes I used have rooted so I have 2. Both are still covered with a top bottle. They are in the shade.
Yes hoovb we rarely have problems with fungi and mold because it is so dry here, but we do get powdery mildew when the nights are cold and the days are warm.
They do have some leaves on the top but not really enough, but like I said the top greenhouse bottles are still on them, on or off??????

Just be very careful when you go to transplant it, and be sure to keep it in the shade til it takes hold in its new place. I'd be very protective of the cuttings at this stage.

I'm thrilled that this worked for you!! When I root cuttings using a bottle for the greenhouse top, I start to harden off the newly rooted rose by simply taking off the bottle top. After a week or so of this, I take off the bottle completely, but keep the rose in a protected location until you think it has enough roots to maintain moisture to the top of the plant in a less protected spot. I transplant out of my rooting containers pretty quickly. As soon as you think the rootball will hold together, you can transplant it to a one gallon pot. I feed my newly rooted roses dilute Miracle Gro (1/2 tsp per gallon) once a week.

All of the roses in my nursery are treated like this, though I root them under mist instead of a soda bottle now. Everything else is the same .. in fact, I fed my baby roses just yesterday.

Thanks Connie for the info I appreciate it, your mist system sounds really awesome. It has been over a week since I have noticed the roots and I think I should take off the tops then in a week will take off the top bottle as connie stated above. I think I will leave them in the plastic containers they are in now for another month, and yes they are in a protected place. Since by June it will be reaching over 100F and july,aug, sept it can reach over 120F (which worry's me and will be a challange to keep them moist and alive), I think it might be best to re pot them in may so that they are settled before it gets that hot. The 1 gallon pots will be bigger which will keep them wet longer and I will use the moistue control soil that micrle gro puts out, I use that alot here in the desert.
I just loved this experience I think I will do somemore this fall.
I am treating these cuttings with tender care, I will not fail now.
If anyone wants to add more info I would love to hear it.
