I am not afraid of snakes. I won't touch them, however, so please don't say pick them up and move them (they feel creepy). They are great in the yard, garden, even in the sheds, BUT HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM OUT OF THE CHICKEN HOUSE? I have a nest of rat snakes destroying my chicken house. They have now gotten into my doves. I have recently acquired collared doves to raise as a hobby and lost my first one to a rat snake last night. How do you find their nests and make them go away.

we have had copperheads in our garden for several years now, despite clearing the ivy, etc etc,. One of the animal control people suggested moth balls. Yes, I know, I though that too, but at this point was willing to try anything. So I put them around the perimeter of my deck and have not had any more. Now, is this due to the moth balls or the snakes finding a better home? I really don't know. I do know that for $4.50 i was willing to try anything!

There are several ways to exclude snakes ... especially from a chicken coop ... but the exclusion tends to cost a bit of money if done properly.

However ... don't put down Snake-A-Way granules because the chickens will eat it.

Oklahoma Wildlife Control, LLC is proud to be an active participant in the Wildlife Pro Connection, which has begun weekly pod casts to help the public with urban wildlife issues.

March 09-2009 - Wildlife Pro Connection began doing Nation-wide Pod Casts as a public service. To provide support to area people with questions about the most effective, and humane methods of nuisance wildlife control. The reason for these pod casts are to inform the public that we are heading into birthing season for wildlife. Often times, major issues can be headed off before the young are born in your attic, or on your property. Wildlife control professionals will be on the line to answer any questions you may have.

Topics will vary with the questions, but we hope to address issues including raccoon invasions, skunk, rodent, snake, and bird issues. We would also like to address coyote and honey bee issues, or any other issues that people may have with nuisance or predatory wildlife of all species.

We had a duck when I was a kid. At the time we did not notice it but the duck cleaned up all the snails, slugs, and insects from the yard. When the duck was killed by the neighbor dog, we noticed the return of the critters.

I finally got my Guineas

zig zag it took me half a day to figure out c&p meant cut and paste! LOL. I read lots of responses on the guinea threads and so far it sounds like the guineas can be with the chickens until they turn into adults and then they turn really mean towards the chickens. Sad really cause I would have liked to keep them together. But then again I will let the Guineas have free reigh over the yard while the chickens are confined to their fenced in area. Only occasionally do I let them out. Sorry to hear of the murder the dogs committed. Dogs aggravate me when they come around my place. So far they have all gotten zapped by my hot wire and well they have not returned : - ) ncgardengirl you do have to keep a light on the Guineas if they are keets. I have a 100 watt bulb on mines and I am not sure if it is warm enough because they stay huddled up a lot. I can't wait to see if they make a difference. I have a horrible weed problem this year (clovers) ever since we cut the grass the first time. It spread weeds all over the place and it is out of control! I hear they eat the weed seeds. Oh and those white flowers on the cloves well they attracted more than my fair share of bees! Not to mention that I have a lot of ants in one of my tress, They can eat every one of them. I seen a lot of wasps this year too, more food for them and you probably read about my smooth earth snakes. I don't mind if they become part of the food chain. Termites, have not seen any of them yet THANK GOD! Oh and I have so many gnats and ticks too. Just how does this get out of control like this? I can't do it all and sincce I have other animals I can not spray so I am really depending on the guineas to help me out. I should have brought 20 of these suckers. They are so cute! (In an ugly sorta way) I put a small round mirror from the dollar store in the brooder today and they stay in the mirror chirping at themselves. They are so vain!

I love snakes too - drives my husband nuts ;-)) Just a note on the water moccasins/cottonmouths - they can be *very* aggressive, to the point of actually chasing you. I was watering my plants about dusk a few months ago, and caught sight out of the corner of my eye of one approaching me. I started backing up toward the house, even turned the hose on the "jet stream" and spraying it, it just kept coming, head raised and mouth open. Backed me right up to the door. A few weeks after that, my husband found it on our porch again - one of us could have easily stepped on it coming out the door. We decided it had to go, but it sure put up a fight. At 4 feet long, striking at everything, we had to be very careful and creative. I live on a river, lots of big frogs etc. and I think it had discovered an easy food source around my porch pond! I felt bad killing it, but it was kind of "him or us." So if you have a body of water nearby, you do have to be *very* aware of your surroundings.

Hey -- that's pretty neat! Well, my ornate box turtles eat small snakes, but I'd just as well they didn't if they are rat snakes, the only kind I've seen in my yard except for one coral snake that I stepped on barefoot. It didn't react at all like to try to bite me, but just crawled on off. Coral snakes are very non agressive and Texas coral snake's mouth is small and teeth are in the back near their throat so they can't inject venom unless you stick your little finger down their throat.. Also have had 'ring-tail cats' a member of the racoon family, under the deck. They really cleared out a lot of rats. I haven't seen a rat in ages. The paper wasps keep pecan tree aphids in check. And now that I don't use pesticides I know there are many beneficial insects that are natural predators of pest insects that slug it out on a level not immediately observable except in their positive effects. And there's the anole lizards. I've had them dart right in front of my eyes totally oblivious to me and grab a roach. Yesterday one dropped off a shrub and caught a roach on the ground. I'm sure they and the grey fence lizards eat a lot of insects. My dogs chase squirrels, but have only caught a couple of young ones. They've also caught a rat or two. This is all I can think of. Moth balls do not work, and are illegal to put down in your yard because of their chemical composition. If they appear to work ... then it's a coincidence.

There are traps and professionals that can be acquired to remove snake and give options.
