A good white climbing rose?

Hi All,

I haven't ever tried climbing roses and I'm considering trying one now. I would love a white climber, preferably one that blooms continuously. Fragrance would be great, but not necessary. It will be on a 6 foot wooden fence so I will have to plant it next to a trelis and it can't be huge since the fence is only 6 feet. Any good ones I should try?

Also, are there any climbing roses that climb on their own or do all of them have to be tied to a trelis? I would love one that climbs like a clematis does, but I don't think roses grow like that. Thanks!

Most climbers, yes, must be tied to a trellis.

Many of the old rambler types will, yes, climb TREES, for instance, on their own. But most of these are once-blooming, spring-blooming -- such as the banksiaes. (White and Yellow "Lady Banks" roses).

If you want a very remontant rose, I suggest you talk to the folks at Antique Rose Emporium, re. the best selection for your part of TX. (If there is a state with almost as much climactic variety as California, it would be TX.)

Not knowing whether you are in El Paso, Amarillo, Fort Stockton, Austin, or Houston, I advise you to get local advice.

I am in Dallas. I also forgot to mention that I would prefer a rose that will not have a huge problem with blackspot. I had golden celebration at my last house and I loved the flowers, but it rarely had any leaves on it because it got blackspot so bad, even if I sprayed.

I live near Escondido in a much drier and higher-elevation area than you. Reve d'Or, although still young, has done quite well for me and is a good bloomer. I haven't had any disease issues with it and mine is planted against an east-facing house wall. Its colors are variable, but basically light to darker apricot, and the blooms are semidouble to double. I will soon be planting Climbing Lady Hillingdon, a yellow Tea climber, further along the same wall. Well, since my climate is warmer than Virginia, my experiences will definitely not count for much in your evaluation of appropriateness for that region. But if you want a general opinion, I can offer that the climbing Devoniensis that I have is a marvelous thing! Even in my poor sand, it has taken off, growing nine feet upwards in one year, with no fertilization since it was planted. I have added a second one to my collection, to balance the entrance to the garden. And the perfume of this rose is a heady, sensual delight. Oh, just go for it, and if you have to shovel prune it later, do so carefully, and pass it along to someone who can give it a more protected environment! Sumera where are you located? Region definitely makes a big difference on how a rose grows and performs. Here in North Alabama my Quick silvers have grown to 6 feet on their first season grafted from palatine and the own roots maybe 4 feet so far. They would certainly look wonderful and cover that arbor. Here is one 8 months after being planted

I second Jeri's suggestion to talk to the folks at ARE. They have a MUCH better handle on what, if anything, is going to fit your climate and requirements. Kim

I have Moonlight, Prosperity, Sombreuil,aka Colonial White, and Jeanne d'Arc (all available from A.R.E.) and they are healthy, repeat-blooming whites that are also fragrant. Moonlight and Sombreuil are thornier and have more rigid canes than the others, but the simplicity of the Moonlight flowers and the beauty of the Sombreuil compensate for these little imperfections. Jeanne D'Arc is the smallest of these (in my garden), and is the easiest to train/maintain.

Hi aggierose

Ilse Krohn Superior is very reliable, with fragrance and rebloom. It is well worth checking if it does well in you area, it is know for being very adaptable, and can handle hot and cooler climates.
