Absolute beginner overwhelmed by small backyard

Hello! Let me begin by saying that when I say I am a beginner, I mean I am an absolute schmuck when it comes to gardening or even yard work in general. I am open to learning and have been doing some research to educate myself so that's why I'm here!

Anyway - my boyfriend and I live in a big house with a small front/backyard each less than 1000 sq ft. The previous owners had made attempts to "landscape" by planting anything that would grow in the dirt all willy-nilly around the property. One of the owners died - I'm assuming the main yard caretaker - so the yard was left to become severely overgrown before we bought the house. We have spent a considerable amount of time and money cleaning up the front yard and planting some low maintenance plants for improved curb appeal. Things are looking good, especially since neither he nor I know anything about yard beautification. Now it's time to tackle the backyard... and it's a nightmare. So many unidentified plants! So many weeds! So many bald spots where I cannot get grass seed to grow to save my life!! Check out some pics - and . We built a small raised bed because I would like to (attempt) to grow some shade-friendly edibles but I just want everything else out for now so I can plant some grass seed (hopefully with more success than the other side of the yard). Here's the difficulty - I'm about 100 months pregnant and my loving partner has bailed on me for yard duty so I am flying solo on this one. I have tried digging at it with a shovel but, let's face it - I'm not trying to put myself in labor doing all of this right now. Makes me wish we had strong friends who owed us favors to make do this for us but no such luck. I considered hiring someone to clear everything out but cost is a factor since we are trying to save for our new baby. Plus, even though it's a little silly, I'd really like to have that sense of satisfaction knowing that I transformed this space myself. SO... is there a magic tool or gizmo that I can buy or rent economically that will make the removal process easy and painless (insert wishful thinking here)? Or do I need to slowly but surely continue to dig everything out manually? Thanks for any advice you can give.
