I've planted myself into a corner

So before I spent much time reading back posts here on the various Roses forums* I was overcome with a need to buy and plant a rose in my front yard and I bought and planted a Day Breaker. I then realized Day Breaker is pretty much the same color mix as Apricot Drift. Which after seeing them bloom together is actually true! Very exciting. Only now I have a big Floribunda next to a little groundcover shrub and I need a third rose to bridge the gap! They're in full Sacramento sun so I worry about fading. I don't care if it smells good or if it's pink or gold or a mix just so long as it "goes."

Any suggestions? Happy spring everybody!

I would choose perle d'or. Its going to be a fantastic rose in your climate. It starts smaller but builds to a nice size. I have one next to Ambridge and Tamora and the color blends very well.

How tall are your floribunda and ground cover roses? Are you looking for something that is inbetween those two for size? Perle d'Or is lovely but it can get 6 feet tall. If your looking for something between a flori and a ground cover in size I'd look at a mini or miniflora. Softee might be a good one. It's a creamy color and mine gets around 3 feet tall each season. Blooms it's fool head off too!

The general method of garlic growing is plant in the fall, harvest the next summer. Save your biggest bulbs for planting that fall. At planting time, you pop the cloves, and plant them individually. Then repeat following years. What you have sounds alot like my mom's elephant garlic plot I helped clean up a few years ago. It had been neglected for seveal years. A couple of the years my step-father tilled the area in teh fall when everything was dead, and covered with chopped leaves and grass clippings from the yard, hoping to smother everything. I told him all the tilling did was spread the bulbs and cloves around, and the mulching was really protecting and feeding them. The soil was awesome! Then it was just left a couple of years. So what we had were bulbs that died back in the summer/fall, and the cloves then started growing new bulbs. Not every bulb or clove survived, but I pulled some of the biggest clumps of the tiniest elephant garlic you will ever see. Plus some reasonable sized ones, and rounds, and even 2 truly sized elephant garlic bulbs. I did pick the scapes first. I ended up with 2 brown paper grocery bags full of scapes! What we did, and what my recommendation would be to you is: -- We pulled it all in the summer just as leaf die back started, maybe a bit earlier than ideal, but we wanted to clean it up. -- The small bulbs (and rounds) that were generally unusable for planting and to small or annoying to process in anyway, were composted. -- The biggest bulbs (and rounds) were kept for seed garlic. My mom kept only enough to grow the amount she wanted the next year, plus I got some. -- Everything left over was put aside for use in the kitchen and to be given away. I believe the bulbils you planted will produce what are called rounds. It looks like one clove that didn't divide. Those can be picked and dried and re-planted and they will produce a bulb the following year. Good luck.

We are getting off the topic, but I remember the lush yard of my childhood w/ all the clover and watching the honeybees, and the exciting days when we would take the honey out of the hives... I planted clover and I wish all the weedy grass would go away! (No neighbors are going to care here as our lots are set in the middle of woods, and we are out in the country.) My clover has had a tough time (doesn't like sand?), but there is one low-growing weed that I am encouraging as it does not need to be mowed. No mowing is my goal. As for my clems (many of which you all enabled!), they are doing fairly well. I was most impressed w/ Arabella- the best bloomer! I have mostly watered from my rain barrels this summer and it is not very satisfactory because the sand soaks up the moisture so fast (great for watering pots and small areas though). I too have to figure out where to plant the ones I stuck in pots in the spring. Most are going into the rose garden (if the roses don't make it maybe the clems will). I have planted several to climb up my deck railings. I know there is a lot of controversy about adding soil amendments, but I am with the other readers who see the fence as a prime planting ground. Maybe someone who knows more about amendments could help out? I wish you the best of luck in finding them a good place, and would appreciate it if you will wish me luck as well. Thanks, Brandy

It's normal - resin will ooze out of cut petioles, and it is clear, thick and gooey. After it sets it does look like ice. It seems to happen after an extended period of moisture. It's as if excess water is released as the sap flows up. x

Thanks ttodd for your help. There is so much brown in the room, it needs to be balanced out. The blue in the Harbor Gray may help with that. The panels- my DH made them and actually were his idea. I think it is neat that I can redo it over and over, just get different fabric. The fabric that is up there we had laying around. I plan on making pillows from the left over fabric. The lamps are another issue. I want simpler ones that have a glass vase base, but I haven't changed those out yet.

Carding Mill is a great Austin rose for a hot-summer climate. It keeps on blooming and is a very pretty rose. One of the best Austins I think for the heat.

Looking at their heights on HMF, I would say either Precious Dream or Lawrence of Arabia would be in the size range. For me, Precious Dream is a bit more vigorous and healthy while Lawrence of Arabia has blooms that are a bit more variable and ornate in color.

What do you see as a "bridge". Something taller than the floribuna, or something in between the two sizes? Actually in thinking about it the latter sounds more like a bridge, and the first like a mountain. Yes so indeed - how big are the two you already have?

If you want big, I love Heirloom (light purple) with Apricots, but she's tall. Oooo - or Angel Face - lavendar, and smallish but spreading in my garden. For a blending color, mid size I'd think Mardi Gras would look wonderful.

Sorry, yes I'm looking for something between the two- I've got a good-sized crepe myrtle behind them on a slope so I can't get too big.

Kitty- I actually first wanted a perle d'or until I saw in in the Historic Rose Garden here. It's the size of an early VW bug. Seriously. It's gorgeous but won't fit. I mean, I still want it but it would be cruel to shove it in a corner without enough space.

Softee and Lawrence of Arabia sound amazing! Thanks for all your lovely suggestions- I have to get ordering before it gets any further into the growing season!

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you wanted something bigger back behind them to fill the space visually. I vote for a med. sized French Lace.

If black spot isn't a problem, how about Angel Face? I'm afraid in your warm climate Julia Child might get too big for your space. I love that rose, but I have one that is 5 feet tall, and one than is 6 feet. They are both chubby, too. Great rounded shape, but quite substantial. Diane
